Tidal Now Supports FLAC, Rolls Out 6 Million Tracks in Hi-Res Lossless

Tidal’s CEO, Jesse Dorogusker, announced on Reddit that beginning June 29th, Tidal will have hi-res FLAC (free lossless Audio Codec) tracks in up to 24bit/192kHz available for their Early Access Program (EAP) users. They plan to take the feedback from this smaller group of users and improve upon it and start opening up the new format to all Hi-Fi Plus by August, 2023.

“It’s open source, allowing greater access for artists and fans, and aligns with TIDAL’s support for open platforms. Pairing accessibility with best-in-class audio quality directly aligns with our purpose of empowering artists to run thriving businesses in the economy,” Dorogusker said.

If you are currently an EAP member, all you have to do is update your app, and select the “max” quality setting in the new Audio & Playback menu.

This announcement led to speculation about the future of MQA, which has historically been the only format on Tidal that goes beyond CD quality. Dorogusker has not yet clarified whether Tidal will continue to support MQA. He has said that the company will "continue to support multiple formats to make sure we have as much hi-res content as possible."

This announcement does not settle the open question about the future of MQA on Tidal. However, it does suggest that Tidal is committed to providing its subscribers with the best possible sound quality.

Apple Music, Qobuz, and Amazon Music already offer a lot of their music in hi-res lossless format. Spotify still does not have a lossless option but there have been rumors that it will be coming soon. Be sure to follow our newsletter and we will update you when that news breaks.
