Rotel Company History
Rotel is the family-run builder of high-end Music Systems for the best sounding home theaters and high-performance media rooms. The brand has been making high-end audio systems out of its Japan headquarters for more than 55 years. When it merged with Bowers & Wilkins in the 1980s, Rotel acquired exclusive rights to distribute in North America and Europe, giving Rotel a new opportunity to expand its reputation. Always a family-run business, Rotel takes the time to build, test and critically evaluate each new component before it allows a product to go into production.
Rotel says, “we don’t launch products simply to have something new to sell.” Instead, Rotel has always played the long game when it comes to the quality of its components. Rather than chasing features endlessly, Rotel has always focused on no-frills designs and audio components that emphasize supreme build quality, musical accuracy, and affordability. In fact, many of Rotel’s now 30-plus-year-old components are still in service today — the ultimate testament to the quality that stands the test of time. It’s only one of our reasons for being such believers in the brand for so long.
Audio Advice’s founder, Leon Shaw, says “we’ve carried Rotel since the 80’s back when it was making some of the best sounding high-end two-channel stereo systems on the market.” Describing the live sound of Rotel’s products throughout the years we’ve carried it, Leon’s eyes lit up. Leon describes Rotel’s soundstage as “warm, dynamic, and musical.” It’s the ideal sound signature for home theaters. In-home theater systems, it’s exactly what your family needs to be fully immersed in the plot of a great film. And in-home media rooms, it’s essential for enhancing your family’s appreciation of music, together.
Music and movies are visceral when played through a great system. You should expect nothing less than what the artist or director intended. Hear what over 55 years of electronic manufacturing experience can do for your family’s audio/video enjoyment. At Audio Advice, we know high-end audio, and we’re confident you’ll be satisfied with our advice.
Rotel Music Systems
A stereo system today can be something as simple as an integrated amplifier connected to your smartphone, with the multitude of music sources a smartphone can provide, and a pair of bookshelf speakers. Or, it might be something larger and more sophisticated – a stereo preamplifier with on-board Digital-to-Analog convertor, multiple independent sources including a turntable, a CD player, a network music player and powerful separate amplifiers for bi-amping full range floor-standing speakers. Simple or sophisticated, Rotel manufactures a wide range of high performance, high-value audio components that will deliver all of the passion and detail that the artist intended.
Rotel A12 Integrated Amplifier
The A12 integrated amplifier displays the same clean lines and intuitive operation as the A14 with output power rated at 60 watts per channel RMS into 8 ohms. Rotel engineers begin their quest for uncompromising audio performance at the power supply. This is the heart of an amplifier and an area where considerable time and investment is spent. Rotel manufactures its own toroidal transformers in-house to high tolerances using raw materials selected from proven, trusted suppliers. The result is a rugged power supply that won’t easily distort the music under dynamic conditions or with difficult speaker loads.
Rotel A14 Integrated Amplifier
The flagship A14 has the highest power and widest set of features in the range. The A14 is rated at 80 watts per channel RMS into 8 ohms, both channels driven. Yet ratings alone do not reflect real-world usage. The A14 features a rugged power supply comprising a Rotel-manufactured toroidal transformer plus slit-foil capacitors to effortlessly handle difficult speaker loads and dynamic signal peaks.
This is an impressively flexible audio component, designed to accommodate both classic analog and the latest digital source components supported by the onboard AKM 32-bit/768kHz DAC. But its greatest strength lies in its ability to render a musical performance exactly as the artist intended.
Rotel CD14 Compact Disc Player
In 1989, Rotel confirmed its digital audio expertise with the launch of the RCD-855 CD player. The press was overwhelming in its praise, one critic going so far as to call it “The steal of the century”, and since then Rotel has never looked back.
The CD14 design begins with a carefully engineered power supply to ensure separate, ripple-free voltage and current to both digital and analog circuits. It maintains the same clean lines and intuitive operation as the other 14 series models while demonstrating an uncanny ability to resolve even the smallest musical details in a recording.
RA-1572 Integrated Amplifier
The RA-1572 combines proven analog design with sophisticated digital circuits to bring all of your sources to life with amazing fidelity.
Long recognized as a central component in superb yet cost-effective music systems, the integrated amplifier’s job has evolved substantially as many music-lovers have migrated to digital sources. The RA-1572 is one of the best examples of melding classic analog design with contemporary digital circuits to bring all of your sources to life with surpassing fidelity.
As typical of Rotel amplifiers, the RA-1572’s circuitry draws on a high capacity power supply based on a Rotel custom designed and in-house manufactured oversized toroidal transformer. In addition to providing an abundance of voltage and current for all operating stages, the transformer’s toroidal shape helps prevent stray radiation patterns from corrupting audio signals as they pass through adjacent circuit stages.
Subsequent power supply segments built with tight-tolerance parts including T-Network capacitors provide the exact voltage and current requirements to ensure stress-free signal reproduction.
The RA-1572’s input section is substantially more flexible than that found in most integrated amplifiers. In recognition of the predominance of digital sources available today, the RA-1572 has a built-in state of the art 32-bit/768kHz AKM digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and analog stages of the highest quality. The DAC and surrounding circuitry support a vast array of source inputs including DSD capable PC-USB (32-bit/384kHz). A front-panel USB input is provided for easy connection of a wide variety of music storage devices including Apple iPods, iPhones, and iPads. The Bluetooth input supports aptX for superior performance with compatible devices. Also, two each coaxial (RCA) and optical (TOSlink) inputs provide easy connections for LPCM music sources including popular streaming devices with up to 24-bit word lengths sampled at 192 kHz. Importantly, it is possible to fix the level and set an auto-on option with digital inputs for use with devices that provide their own volume control for convenient “hands-off” use. Analog inputs include a pair of balanced XLR connectors in addition to conventional RCA jacks.
The Class AB output stage uses discrete devices to ensure precise reproduction of all signals regardless of origin with virtually any loudspeaker. The power output, conservatively rated at a robust 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms, is substantial as it is a continuous “both channels are driven simultaneously” rating fully in keeping with real-world requirements and Rotel’s tradition of providing extraordinary value. A mono subwoofer output is also provided.
User conveniences include two 12-volt triggers to control on/off operation of other components, a highly visible VFD display for set-up, internet-based software updates, as well as RS232 and IP control capabilities.
RB-1582 MkII Stereo Amplifier
At 2 x 200 Watts per channel and utilizing Rotel's Balanced Design Concept for superior performance, the RB-1582 MkII is a compelling stereo amplifier.
Rotel’s next largest stereo amplifier at 200 Watts per channel provides the massive current to drive the very largest Hi-Fi systems effortlessly. And like its smaller brother, the RB-1582 MkII has been designed to excel at resolving the subtle details in music as well as supplying the brawn required for extremely dynamic passages. It can achieve this difficult dual requirement because of the meticulous attention paid to circuit design and parts selection.
The RB-1582 MkII's high-end performance begins with an extremely large toroidal transformer combined with a total of 60,000µF storage capacity in special “slit foil” capacitors to provide completely stable power to the output stage. Slit foil capacitors can charge and discharge extremely quickly, thereby ensuring signal fidelity during orchestral crescendos or repetitive kick-drum impacts, for example. Both left and right channel construction are laid out in a monoblock design (after the toroidal transformer) and all grounding is terminated in a star pattern on a copper grounding plate to ensure low signal to noise. The output stage is a discrete design that consists of 10 high current bipolar transistors per channel. Input options consist of both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA connectors.
The RB-1582 MkII stereo power amplifier is yet another outstanding example of Rotel’s Balanced Design Concept and will form the heart of a very impressive stereo or home theater system for years to come.
The RC-1572 provides an entryway into higher performing separate components with all of the analog and digital inputs required by today's sources.
The heart of an uncompromising audiophile stereo “separates” system is the preamplifier. Separate components hold the promise of the best possible fidelity since each device is optimized for its role in the sound reproduction chain. The new RC-1572 stereo preamplifier leverages the design of our flagship RC-1590 preamplifier including its 32 bit/768kHz AKM stereo digital-to-analog converter to handle the critical signal conversion. Among many refinements, the RC-1572 utilizes relay switching for analog sources instead of an IC-based switch to maintain the integrity of the signal path for RCA, phono and XLR inputs.
Beneath the clean lines and user-friendly fascia of the RC-1572 lies highly sophisticated engineering. Both analog and digital sources have been given equal consideration as today’s listener often has several digital sources, but may also enjoy legacy formats like vinyl LPs. A large toroidal transformer and regulated power supply ensure stable current and voltage requirements to all stages under dynamic conditions. Premium circuit components have been selected only after extensive listening evaluations. Careful routing of all low-level signals has been practiced to ensure impressive signal to noise levels. The result is effortless musical dynamics, impressive detail and scale.
The RC-1572 stereo preamplifier is also extremely flexible. Four digital inputs (2 coaxes and 2 optical), plus the rear PC-USB handle digital sources up to 32/384 resolution. The 4 inputs are designed for sources such as TV set-top boxes, flat-panel TVs or Blu-ray players for stunning playback. Importantly, it is possible to fix the level and set an auto-on option with digital inputs for use with devices that provide their own volume control for convenient “hands-off” use. The PC-USB input supports DSD signals. Integrated Bluetooth aptX is provided. Analog inputs include balanced XLR connectors, perfect for connecting the RCD-1572 via its XLR outputs, in addition to four pairs of conventional RCA inputs. A moving magnet phono stage rounds out the source capability. XLR and single-ended outputs are provided along with a mono subwoofer output, as are two 12-volt triggers to control on/off operation of an amplifier and/or other components. For custom integration, control options include RS232 on a standard DB9 connector, as well as an Ethernet port for IP control and software updates. In short, the RC-1572 is a tremendous value and the perfect upgrade for owners of older analog-only preamplifiers.
RCD-1572 CD Player
The RCD-1572, the outstanding CD player in Rotel‘s 15 series, focuses careful refinements to reveal even the most subtle nuances buried in a CD’s pit spiral.
The RCD-1572 elevates performance by utilizing a purpose designed and built CD mechanism along with other circuit refinements. One of the RCD-1572’s most important features is the Wolfson WM8740 digital filter/stereo digital-to-analog converter. Originally developed for high resolution sources, it is the product of extensive research and real world testing and processes digital signals up to 24-bits in length at sampling rates from 8 kHz to 192 kHz.
While word lengths and sampling speed may seem excessive for CDs delivering data at far lower rates, this high speed facility adds reserve capability to ensure proper reproduction under all circumstances. As the most crucial link between a CD’s digital data and the analog world in which we listen, this converter boasts significant attributes in addition to its superb high resolution capabilities.
The post-converter analog circuitry benefits from Rotel‘s decades-long experiences in crafting the finest sounding pathway from the DAC’s internal output to RCA and XLR rear panel connectors that bridge the gap between the RCD-1572 and down-stream components. All circuit components – resistors, capacitors, inductors – are chosen only after their positive contribution to sound quality were quantified and verified qualitatively by extensive listening sessions.
All of these circuits draw on a power supply based on an oversized custom Rotel-designed and precision-manufactured toroidal power transformer that, in turn, feeds precise rectifiers, tight-tolerance voltage regulators, and advanced Slit-Foil low-ESR storage capacitors, all globally sourced to ensure musically accurate operation under even the most demanding conditions.
This is all part of Rotel’s long-proven Balanced Design Concept. It’s yet another way of assuring you that the RCD-1572 evidences a level of attention that will make it part of your reference-level music system for years to come.
