Sounds very good right out of the box.

Smooth. Natural. Non-fatiguing. I can listen to this for hours. I mounted this on a THORENS TD 160 Mk 2 turntable and lined it up by sight on my system at work. Tracking is very good like this and quiet. It’ll only get better when it’s done a little more properly and precisely. So I played the virgin cart on a virgin record, Thelonious Monk live at Palo Alto high school from 1968 just released for the first time. Awesome. The bass is not boomy and the drum solo is tremendous. And Monk? Well he’s Monk. Very smooth sounding. Seems I can hear every little nuance. Then I played All Them Witches, Lightning At The Door, psychedelic hard rock. Great man, just great. Using an old Sansui 7000 receiver in great shape with Polk Audio Monitor 40 speakers. It all pairs very well thank you very much. Really glad I bought this cart. It’ll only get better while breaking in. Recommended.

The way records should sound

My project Debut Carbon came with the Ortofon Red 2M. Great cartridge, but way too bright for my taste. Over a set of Klipsch floor standing speakers, they (the speakers and the cartridge) caused listening fatigue within an hour. Yep, Klipsch's have too much treble that would make some people want to throw them out. But I am stuck with a $2,000 mistake. So my only option was to seek a cartridge that is not too bright, and sounds more natural. Enter Sumiko pearl.
I was amazed at how natural this cartridge sounds, how pleasant the audio quality is and how much more time I can spend listening to music even over the crappy RF625 Klipsch speakers I have. Over the Ortofon 2M reds, my wife would plug her earphones after listening to records or any other music source. Over the Sumiko pearls, she doesn't have to.
One challenge I had with the Pearl is their lighter weight, 6g as compared to 8 for the Ortofon. I had to switch to a lighter counter-weight on my Pro-Ject debut carbon.
