KEF sent Audio Advice all three finishes ahead of the official launch, Eclipse Black, Dusk Titanium, and Mineral White, and our team has had the chance to see and hear them in person on KEF's matching S-LUXE stands, moved through a few different listening spaces. The technology packed into the LS LUXE is clearly impressive on paper. What matters more is whether all of it, the industrial design, the acoustic engineering, and the wireless convenience, actually comes together into a system worth considering for a real living room.

Sculptural Design, Built to Back It Up

Lovegrove's design work tends to use smooth, organic shapes that feel more sculptural than mechanical, and the LS LUXE carries that philosophy into a speaker that can sit on a console or cabinet without looking like a traditional rectangular box. The cabinet has a smooth, rounded shape with almost no hard edges, and that's not purely an aesthetic decision. Sharp cabinet edges create diffraction, meaning sound leaving the driver interacts with the edges of the enclosure, and the rounded shape helps it disperse more cleanly into the room. KEF also uses an especially durable cabinet material here, letting it hold this complex shape while staying rigid and controlled, with enough internal volume to properly house the larger Uni-Q driver without adding its own vibration or resonance.

The Bigger Uni-Q Driver and MAT

At the center of the LS LUXE is a 6.5-inch, 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array. KEF has been refining Uni-Q since the 1980s, and the goal has stayed the same the whole time: put the tweeter in the acoustic center of the larger cone so every frequency range originates from the same point in space instead of arriving from separate spots on the cabinet like a traditional speaker. That creates more consistent dispersion across a wider listening area, which matters for something like the LS LUXE that will often get used in shared living spaces with people listening from different seats. Behind the tweeter is Metamaterial Absorption Technology, or MAT, a maze-like structure that absorbs the unwanted sound energy coming off the back of the tweeter before it can reflect through the diaphragm and color what's heard. MAT absorbs 99 percent of that energy. It's technology that's appeared throughout KEF's higher-end lineup, including Blade and The Reference, though that doesn't mean the LS LUXE is running an identical driver pulled from one of those speakers. The connection is more about engineering philosophy: all three use the same point-source approach and MAT technology, adapted for each specific speaker's driver, cabinet, and amplification.

KEF also mechanically decouples the whole Uni-Q assembly from the cabinet itself, with its own flexible chassis that dampens vibration from the woofer's motor before it can excite the cabinet panels. It's separate engineering from MAT, but it's chasing the same goal: keeping the cabinet from adding any coloration of its own.

VECO, MIE, and Current-Drive Amplification

KEF pairs that driver with Velocity Control Technology, or VECO, a sensor and feedback system that monitors the driver's motion in real time and corrects for distortion and compression if it starts drifting from the signal. VECO first showed up in KEF's XIO soundbar, which Audio Advice has reviewed in depth and was really impressed with, and the LS LUXE brings that same feedback concept into the LS Wireless line on a much larger driver.

The LS LUXE also runs KEF's Music Integrity Engine, or MIE, which isn't a physical component but a collection of digital signal processing algorithms tuned specifically for this speaker, letting the driver, amplifiers, cabinet, and processing work together as one system, one of the real advantages of an active speaker where KEF controls the entire signal path instead of guessing what amp or source will be connected. On top of that, current-drive amplification gives KEF more direct control over the Uni-Q driver's motion instead of just sending it voltage and hoping the mechanics keep up. The payoff is straightforward: the sound stays clean and controlled when pushed, right where smaller active speakers usually start sounding strained or compressed.

There's plenty of power onboard, too. Each speaker runs 280 watts of Class D amplification on the low end and 100 watts of Class A/B on the high end for a total of 380 watts per speaker, with a max output rating of 110 decibels. That doesn't mean anyone should actually listen at 110 decibels, but it signals that this isn't a small desktop speaker meant only for background music. KEF lists the frequency range as 35 hertz to 47 kilohertz, that's the wider -6dB spec, while the tighter ±3dB range, where the response is genuinely flat, is 42 hertz to 28 kilohertz. Either way, 42 hertz is still impressive for a cabinet just over 13 inches tall, though a spec alone doesn't tell the whole story of how much usable output it holds at that frequency in a real room.

How the LS LUXE Actually Sounds

Röyksopp's "If You Want Me," with Susanne Sundfør on vocals, showed off what the Uni-Q and MAT combination can do right away. The synth layers spread well beyond the cabinets and filled the space between the speakers, while her voice stayed planted directly in the middle with a ton of texture. Nothing felt smeared together, and the center image held up even when moving slightly off the ideal listening spot. That's the difference between a soundstage that's simply wide and one that's actually organized, plenty of speakers can create an impressive sense of width, but keeping individual voices and instruments clearly defined within that space is the harder job, and the LS LUXE did it well.

Daft Punk's "Give Life Back to Music" was a good way to test the low end. The growling bass line is what reveals whether a smaller speaker can stay composed, and through the LS LUXE it had real weight and impact but stayed tight and controlled even when pushed, no bloat, no losing its shape. What stood out more than the amount of bass was how the whole presentation held together: the low end stayed controlled, the vocals stayed clean, and the soundstage didn't collapse toward the cabinets as the volume increased. That's the bigger Uni-Q driver, VECO, MIE, and the current-drive amp all showing up in the room exactly the way KEF says they should on paper.

The LS LUXE sounds bigger and more authoritative than the LS50 Wireless II, with more weight down low and more ease as volume rises. The LS60 still has the edge in overall scale and low-end foundation since it's a larger floorstanding system with dedicated bass drivers, but the LS LUXE gets surprisingly close to that same effortlessness for something this compact.

Bass, Subwoofers, and Real-World Limits

It's worth being realistic about what a compact enclosure can do. The LS LUXE provides solid bass on its own, and plenty of listeners will be happy running the pair without anything else, but it's not going to replace a properly integrated subwoofer for true deep-bass extension on movies, electronic music, or large-scale orchestral recordings.

KEF made subwoofer integration easier by putting a dedicated subwoofer output on both the primary and secondary speaker instead of just the primary side, which gives more flexibility positioning a sub and makes a dual-subwoofer setup easier to wire. The LS LUXE is also compatible with KEF's KW1 wireless subwoofer adapter for anyone who'd rather skip running a cable altogether.

Connectivity, Streaming, and Everyday Control

The LS LUXE runs on KEF's W2 Wireless Platform and can be a music system, a TV system, or both.
