How to reboot your cable box and save a service call

Our most common service calls involve a locked up cable or satellite box.

Any of the following symptoms can usually be fixed by a reboot of the box:

  • Frozen picture
  • No sound
  • No picture
  • No sound and no picture
  • Loss of list of recorded shows

Luckily, it’s pretty easy to reboot

  • Press and hold Volume +, Volume – , and Info on the front of your cable box until the display starts to change. The display will usually change to read “BOT”.  In 2-4 minutes the clock will be back to normal looking in the front window.  Press the power button on the front of the box and you should be back up and running.  In some cases it will take up to 4-5 reboots to resolve the issue.
  • If  your box has a small red reset button behind a door, press it to reboot. If you do not have this button, you will have to unplug the power cord, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in, then it will reboot.  This will take about 3-5 minutes.
  • If you have the newer Directv system where there is a main box with multiple tuners and smaller boxes that talk to this box you can sometimes loose your list of recorded shows.  The first step to try is, reboot the main box.  It will take about 5 minutes to reboot.  If your list of shows still does not show up, you will have to reboot your smaller box, which you can do using the menu button and settings, then after it reboots, you will need to reboot the main box again to restore communication.
  • Open the flap on the front and press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the receiver restarts then release the button.  This will take about 5 minutes.  In same cases you will need to do a hard reboot by removing power, waiting 30 minutes, then plugging power back in.  Again it will take about 5 minutes to boot back up.
  • Press and hold the power button on the front for 10 seconds then release.  You may see an orange display on your TV during the reboot, which takes about 2 minutes.
  • Select Settings, General Settings, Restart.  Many times your Apple TV may appear to work ok but can not receive a streaming signal for Netflix.  Restarting it will fix this issue 99% of the time.  If it does not, try completely removing power by pulling out the power cord, waiting 10 seconds and plugging back in.
  • Roku units will require you to completely remove power, wait 10 seconds, then plug power back in.  They will exhibit similar symptoms to Apple TV where it seems to navigate ok but can not stream.  Rebooting will fix this 99% of the time.
  • Smart TVs can appear to display signals just fine but not be able to stream video in for their smart apps.  This is usually solved by removing power from the TV, waiting 10 seconds, then plugging the power cable back in.
  • If you have lost audio or video, or streaming services have stopped working through your receiver, it needs a reboot.  You will need to remove the power cord, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
