I was lucky to get the opportunity to see the Rolling Stones last month on the Zip Code tour at Carter Finely Stadium in Raleigh. It was a great concert that I’ll remember forever. A friend of mine sent me a link to a review on my favorite surround sound processor, the Datasat RS20i. The review mentioned hearing a demo of the Sweet Summer Sun disc of the Stones wrapping up their 50th anniversary tour in 2013 at Hyde Park in the UK. I had almost bought the disc when it first came out but read a review that panned the video, so I passed. After reading the review, I decided to give it another shot.
I started up the Blu-ray (be sure to click on the Audio settings on the menu and choose DTS-HD Master Audio, as it defaults to PCM) and about 5 minutes into it, I was just grinning ear-to-ear!
With the right system, this disc will put you at the concert! Recently, 2:35 wide screen cinema has started to become more popular. We’re even beginning to see live concerts, shot in the format. This is the first one from the Stones, and what a great one to pick. You are just so much more immersed in the performance with a widescreen presentation. The video on a great front projector is absolutely stunning — and I have to say the Datasat RS20i does exactly as the reviewer felt on this disc. It’s just amazing! You’ll hear ever instrument totally separated. The mix will at times make you feel like you are on stage with the band and at other times out in the audience. When they do “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with a full choir, you will get goose bumps!
My wife opened the door to our theater in the middle of “Gimme Shelter” when Lisa Fischer was belting out her classic part and she just stood there mesmerized until she sat down for the rest of the concert. Her words were, “this is a sensory-stunning experience.”
If you have a good home theater and are a fan of rock and roll, pick up a copy of this disc and prepare to grin and tap your foot the whole concert. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading to a widescreen theater with great audio to go along with it, I would love to work with you and your sales consultant to help design the theater of your dreams.
Movies and concerts like this, that give you the suspension of disbelief where you feel you are part of it, are why I love what I do, it’s just so much fun!
And speaking of the Datasat, there is a new model, the LS10. At about half the price of the RS20i, its actually got a few more features in terms of inputs, has a great EQ (without Dirac) and will be getting a Dolby Atmos upgrade later this year. I personally cannot wait to get the Atmos upgrade for the RS20i and install some more speakers in my ceiling!
The disc is The Rolling Stones Sweet Summer Sun, Hyde Park Live. Get it on Blu-ray and remember to set up the audio for DTS-HD Master
