The year was 1991 and a man named Michael Kelly came by with some prototype speakers from a new company called Aerial Acoustics. I remember playing with them for a few days, making some comments, and telling Michael to come back with the next version. Well about a year later Michael showed back up with an updated version of his first speaker, the 10T. He had made many improvements. It seems just like yesterday that I was sitting there listening to them. The 10T never really bowled you over on first listen, but the longer you sat, the more you just got sucked into the music and found yourself pulling out lots of favorites. The 10T went on to become one of the very best values in high performance speakers, even with its, shall we say, less than perfect aesthetic characteristics (in other words, they are pretty ugly!)
Well now almost 20 years have passed since that time, and guess what? Michael calls me up and says he has a brand new speaker that’s been 5 years in the making and would I like to hear them? They have just arrived, and I must say, I felt like I had gone back in time. I sat down and just like in 1992, I was not initially bowled over with the sound, yet nothing sounded wrong. Then the more I listened, the more they grew on me. Once again, I’m digging around for my favorite music. These guys are really good!
The new Aerial is called the 7T, however, unlike the 10T, this speaker is just flat gorgeous! And, unlike the 10T, it’s efficient, so while like all great speakers, it will benefit from a large amp, you don’t have to have one.
We’ve got the new 7T set up in our showroom, and are probably the first dealer on the east coast to have a pair on display. If you have ever owned an Aerial, you owe it to yourself to come see Michael’s latest accomplishment. And if you are considering a high performance speaker, these should most certainly be on your short list!
