The Carolinas’ wonderful spring and summer evenings are just around the corner, when we can get outdoors and spend more time enjoying our friends and family. Nothing adds more pleasure to the mood of togetherness than playing your favorite music to help bring back old memories or be a part of creating new ones!

If your outdoor entertaining area includes a pool or large hardscape area, filling the space evenly with sound is challenging. What’s the big issue? The great outdoors does not have any walls! Instead of sound waves bouncing off the walls of an inside room and filling it, the sound dissipates quickly when there is nothing to reflect it back. If you have only a pair or two of rock or weatherproof speakers for a large area, you have to turn the volume up loud to fill the area. This means your music is blaring right by the speakers and heard at about half that level 20 to 30 feet away.

Sonance has created an elegant solution to this dilemma that solves the sound problem and appearance issues. While we audiophiles are happy with regular speaker designs, they don’t look like they belong outdoors. Sonance fixes this with small satellite speakers that look just like landscape lights. The idea is to spread these all around your entertaining area to evenly distribute sound. We then bury one or more subwoofers in the ground to provide deep bass. All you see is a modest sized cap for the sub and small objects that appear to be landscape lights. But the sound you will hear is fantastic!

Of all the outdoor systems we have sold, the Sonance system has provided universal customer satisfaction in every way. Everyone loves its virtual invisibility as well as the sound. And we aren’t just talking about background music. Properly installed, this system rocks!

We have Sonance systems installed at our Raleigh and Charlotte showrooms for you to demo. Even better: with a simple drawing of your outdoor area, we will work with engineers at Sonance to design the ultimate music system for your unique space. Why not make this outdoor entertaining season your best ever with some great music?!

Another great way to add music if you have a small outdoor deck or patio is with our favorite pair of weatherproof speakers, the B&W AM1.. For about $600 a pair, you’ll get fantastic sound and have lots of mounting options.

If you want to take outdoor entertainment a step further and add video, nothing beats the Séura brand Storm line of outdoor TVs. We’ve seen many so-called outdoor TVs since we’ve been doing this. None have held up better over time than Storm from Séura. These are thoroughly weatherproof and have a much better look than typical outdoor TVs. They include seamless glass faces, discreetly beveled edges, subtle aluminum mitered frames and tapered profiles to add elegance to your outdoor space as well as a great picture.

Séura’s new Storm Ultra Bright outdoor TVs offer the brightest picture ever for a great picture – even in direct, full sunlight. How do they pull this off? First, they have a special anti-reflective coating on the screen. But the real secret is the Ultra Bright panel. The unit of measure used to define the light output of a panel or cathode ray tube is called a NIT. (One NIT is equivalent to one candela per square meter.) Most indoor TVs measure around 200 NITs in light output. Until now, the brightest outdoor TVs were around 450 NITS. Well, the Seura Storm Ultra Bright models measure 700 NITs! This produces a picture you can enjoy outside even in full sunlight.

The Séura TVs also include a fully integrated ventilation system to keep outdoor dust out and the temperature cool. They are rated to be used at temperatures ranging from -30 to 140 degrees! (I think they can handle weather in the Carolinas!) The new Séura Ultra Bright TVs are available in 42, 47, and 55 inch models and prices range from $4999 to $7500.

The original Séura line with the same elegant design has 42, 55, and 65 inch models with 450 NITs output, starting at $2999. If your outdoor TV entertaining happens after the sun starts going down, these are probably fine for your space. Imagine how satisfying your outdoor entertaining can be by adding great sound and video designed specifically for your home!
