As 2012 comes to a close, I thought it would be fun to look back at some of our blog posts from earlier in the year. You can click on the links to read the full blog post. So here goes with the best of 2012 in no particular order:

The first two go to new products released in 2012. Both of these went on to win “product of the year” from various magazines and represent true technology breakthroughs. The PSB M4 U2 headphones have to be one of the best headphone values ever! At $399 they set a new bar. They even followed them up with a non powered version for $299.

The other new product would have to be the Audioquest Dragonfly. Just like the PSB headphones, its been acclaimed on magazine covers all over the world. It’s a great way to listen to music on the go or to jump into the exciting new world of computer music.

I took a major lightning strike this summer and wrote about my experiences. If you ever take a hit yourself, you need to be prepared for what you might have to go through. It’s just not fun when your gear keeps on breaking even months after a hit!
Of course the surge led me to replace my whole system with a new player in the home automation space, Savant. I am loving it! Savant is the only home automation system to run native on the Apple platform. They have an agreement with Apple where they buy Mac Mini’s and modify them to allow their processor to just be a Mac Mini. Nothing I’ve seen is faster or cooler!
The last two predict where I think things are going. The engineers from Sony came by this fall with some real 4K content for us to see on their 4k projector. Unlike 3D, I think 4k will take off and is the video format of the future. It’s almost like seeing HDTV for the first time.
Lastly there is alarm.com. I also put this in my house after my security system went up in smoke. It’s a super well thought out interface that lets you get alerts or control your security system from your smart phone. But, when I wrote the blog I did not know what they had up their sleeves for 2013 and beyond. Imagine using the smart phones your family owns with geo-location services tied into alarm.com. If the whole family is all a certain distance from the home, the alarm could arm. If everyone is away for more than 24 hours, the HVAC could change its settings. You get the idea, cool stuff coming!
