We had heard of the brand but never seen the product in person. That is, until CES 2017. We were so impressed that we decided to become a dealer on the spot.

EAT stands for European Audio Team and is owned by Jozefina Lichtenegger. Her design philosophy is to combine performance with beauty, and we have to say, the EAT products are just beautiful. We cover EAT’s very interesting history in great detail in our review of the C-Sharp -- the bigger brother to the C-Major. While we won’t repeat it all here, she is married to Heinz Lichtenegger, the managing director of Pro-ject Audio Systems. Pro-ject has some amazing production facilities that EAT is able to take advantage of, but the two companies are run totally separate and don’t even really have any similarly designed products.

EAT tables start at $1,595 but go all the way up to over $11k, so the C-Major is the second turntable in their line. It is a fully manual table and comes in a stunning gloss black finish. Every EAT table is solidly built, and the C-Major weighs 20lbs.

Design & Build Quality

The first time that we had a chance to play with the EAT turntables there were a couple of things that really impressed us right off the bat. Their striking appearance will obviously catch your attention. We’ve even had several happy EAT customers tell us that when they first got their table out of the box they just stared at it in awe. Once you start to put the table together, however, you will immediately get a great sense of the superb craftsmanship.

The EAT C-Major has a very similar look to the C-Sharp -- the same low slung body and mix of high gloss black, carbon fiber, and brushed aluminum which make many of the other tables on the market look chunky in comparison. The plinth is made of carbon fiber and is nestled on some floating isolators inside a thin, high-gloss black base. The C-Major’s 9” tonearm features a carbon fiber arm tube and the heavy platter supports a special mat that is made from recycled LPs. It’s then topped off with a substantial record clamp. The whole combination just looks fantastic!

Like all great turntables, the C-Major is a fully manual turntable. You might think that a high-end table like this would be difficult to use, but we were pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s just the opposite! You simply turn it on, move the tonearm over the record, lower it down, and enjoy the tunes!

Features & Technology

We’ll start from the bottom of the table and work our way up. The sleek and slim base is made out of a super dense MDF material. Inside, the low-noise motor is mounted to the lower sub-chassis which is isolated from the upper plinth with eight cone-shaped pieces of a high tech damping material called Thermoplastic Elastomer, or TPE. These provide great isolation from the motor and really do a great job damping out external vibrations. If you want to feel the damping effect, simply push down gently on the plinth.

The plinth is made from an outer shell of carbon fiber sandwiched over MDF. The C-Major has three adjustable feet which make leveling everything a snap. The feet are also internally damped to reduce any external noise from getting up to the table. The EAT also includes a low profile dust cover with the C-Major, which not only protects it, but also matches up with its sleek appearance.

The bearing for the inner platter is pretty similar to what you find in most turntables in this category. The inner platter has a shaft that drops into a bronze bearing well where its tip spins on a special plate made of a near friction-free, teflon-like material.

The outer platter weighs in at a stout 4 lbs and has a great design. The top part that touches the record is made out of recycled vinyl, while the rest of the platter is a sandwich design of an aluminum/magnesium alloy with TPE in the center. EAT puts more mass on the outer edge of the platter, which helps to give it a great flywheel effect. This combination of bearing and platter is one reason the EAT tables all have great speed consistency. Like the more expensive C-Sharp, the C-major also comes with an aluminum record clamp.

While there are lots of things we love about this table, one of our favorite aspects is the carbon fiber tonearm that we mentioned earlier. It’s incredibly adjustable, allowing you to use a wide range of phono cartridges on it. These adjustments exude European precision.

The design of the tonearm is a combination of a uni-pivot and a more conventional Carden type.

Uni-pivot arms can move freely, not only across the record and up and down, but also rotating on the horizontal plane. Imagine an airplane coming in for a landing when you see the wings move up and down on each side in relation to the ground. The theory is there is some movement like this in the record grooves and being able to have freedom of movement allows the cartridge to track better.

The downside of uni-pivots is they are a royal pain to adjust. EAT came up with a brilliant solution that gives you the best of both worlds and we can attest to the fact that it works great! You get a small amount of movement where the arm can tip left to right, but it behaves more like a traditional pivoted arm.

The rear counterweight has an additional weighted insert that you can install for cartridges that are heavier than normal. The counterweight doesn’t have any markings like a lot of high end tonearms, so you will need a stylus pressure gauge to set the right force, but luckily EAT includes one in the box.

You also have azimuth adjustment which allows you to adjust the tonearm left and right. When you look at your tonearm from the front while sitting on a record, the headshell should be parallel to the record surface. EAT lets you really fine tune this if you desire. Finally, you can even adjust the height of the tonearm rest and the cueing cylinder, allowing you to really dial things in for your cartridge.

For anti-skating, EAT uses a gravity-based system which we really like. It is a little bit of a pain to set up, but we’ve been able to help everyone through it, so if you purchase one and have any trouble, just give us a call.

Finally, to change from 33 to 45, like a lot of tables out there, you simply lift off the outer platter and move the belt on the motor pulley.

Please don’t let all of these adjustments make you think this table is finicky or hard to set up. The best way to buy it is with the deal EAT has on the Ortofon Blue, Black MC, or their own JO5. These all come preset up and you save quite a bit with the package -- $250 or $500, which makes the table an amazing deal!

Performance

To test out the EAT C-Major, we set up what we thought might be a typical rig. The table used the Ortofon Blue, which we think is probably the best way to go for the money with the C-Major.

First up was the classic Landside from Fleetwood Mac. When you have a great system that is well set up Stevie Nick’s voice should be dead center while the guitars float in between the speakers. This combo aced this test!

Next up was Robbie Robertson’s Somewhere Down the Crazy River from his first solo album in 1987. We look for two things on this one. First, there are some very dynamic bass attacks as the track begins. Then later on, you can hear lots of emotion in his voice when he says "Why do you always end up down at Nick's Cafe?" , "I don't know, the wind just kind of pushed me this way." It’s in the first “why” and “pushed me this way” on a great system you’ll hear all kinds of subtle inflections in his voice. While we have heard more on much more expensive rigs, this combination once again, really drew us into the music. Plus, it nailed the bass attacks.

After hearing this, we wanted to pull out our favorite cut for testing speed stability. This is Pink Houses from John Cougar's Uh-Huh album. If the table has great speed stability, you’ll be tapping your foot to the music. Once again, the EAT was very impressive.

This is one very special table. It has the ability with its precision tonearm to track really well and its isolation system helps it provide that great bass impact. EAT designs are also winning us over for their speed purity. Finally, with its jewel of a tonearm, it's just fun to use!

Overall Recommendation

The C-Major with the Ortofon Blue is $2,795. In the 1990’s demand for high-quality vacuum tubes was on the rise. A company called VAIC located in the Czech Republic was making waves for some amazing handbuilt tubes. Jozefina Lichtenegger was getting her MBA in Economics and interestingly enough, her sister was married to the owner of VAIC. She started helping out the family business and their reputation grew. After almost 16 years making tubes, VAIC faded away but Jozefina arranged a buyout of Tesla Vrsovice, a large tube maker in Prague, to continue with production of these great tubes. Soon after this, she designed a tube phono stage and tonearm and EAT was born.

This was followed by some very well made high-end turntables. In 2003, while Jozefina was looking for distributors, she met Heinz Lichtenegger, the director of Pro-Ject Audio Systems. Pro-ject is one of the largest high-performance audio manufacturers in the world today and their Debut Carbon turntables are legendary for their great performance and value. They just exude European precision. Like many of our favorite turntables, the C-Sharp is a fully manual turntable. This means to operate it you’ll turn it on, manually lower the tonearm using the damped cueing lever, then at the end of your record, use the cueing lever again to raise the arm. At Audio Advice we prefer manual tables for their simplicity. There’s an argument to be made that the lack of mechanical parts also prevents issues such as resonance from affecting the tables great sound.

The look of the C-Sharp is quite stunning. Unlike many high-end turntables, the C-Sharp is elegant and relatively low-profile. The carbon fiber plinth sits in a high-gloss black base with a thin edge. The base has three adjustable feet, which allow you to get things perfectly leveled.

The main platter bearing sits on the carbon fiber plinth which is supported by the TPE columns. This makes for a great isolation system. If you gently push down on the plinth, you can even feel the spring of these columns. The combination of these features limits the amount of noise able to get back into the system, maximizing the sound quality.

The turntable bearing is one of the most unique designs we have seen. It is an oversized inverted design with a resonance-free ceramic ball bearing on top. The larger inner platter has a massive brass bearing which sits on top of the ball bearing and also extends above the inner platter to provide a perfect fit for the substantial outer platter. Everything fits together with incredible precision! Any vibration noise that does make its wait though is just transferred out to the TPE columns. Quite a brilliant design.

The main outer platter is very heavy, coming in just an ounce shy of 11 pounds! The main platter itself is another sandwich-type design, this time with a very inert aluminum sandwiching some more TPE material. The part of the platter that contacts the record is constructed from recycled records! Topping the platter is a threaded spindle for the included heavy-duty machined record clamp.

To be honest, it’s a little scary during the setup process, trying to center an 11-pound platter on the inner platter. It’s a precision fit, so you’ve got to get it line up just right. Be careful not to mash your fingers as you lower it. The good news is that it fits perfectly and you should really only have to do this the first time you set it up. We recommend you attach the clamp, screw it on firmly, and then gently lower it down while holding it by the clamp.

Even the belt is a bit exotic. It’s constructed from a special antistatic rub, is round like many ultra-high-end turntable belts, and is polished for uniformity.

Like the rest of the turntable, the tonearm also has a ton of great technology buried inside of it. It’s a combination of a unipivot tonearm and traditional pivot design with the middle bearing being a unipivot. When you move it around, you can’t feel any play at all, which is something we look for. It also is virtually friction-free. The arm tube is made of carbon filled with a special silicone grease to damp out any resonances. This arm can fully support just about any type of high-end cartridge you would want to use, which our customers love.

The tonearm has fully adjustable vertical tracking height. You’ll need a stylus pressure gauge to set the tracking force as it is all gravity and there are no markings on the counterweight. Fortunately, a very nice one is included with the table. The anti-skating is a very clever gravity design as well, but you’ll need some pretty good eyesight to get it all set up properly. It has to screw into the side of the tonearm base, then wrap around. Once it's set up, there is no risk of it getting changed, like some gravity designs, but is just a little trickier to start with. Of course, if you purchase your C-Sharp from Audio Advice, we will do all of this for you.

The external power supply is fully isolated and easily allows you to switch between 33 and 45. It has an AC generator built in for totally clean and stable power to the motor.

Finally, the package we are testing comes fitted with an Ortofon Quintet Black. The very first turntables were idler wheel. With this type of a table, a motor with a rubber outer ring contacts the inside of the turntable platter, using friction to spin the platter. This is a very noisy type of design that is not really found much these days, for obvious reasons.

Direct drive is popular due to the fact it starts up instantly and is safe for spinning the platter backwards for DJ type use. However, with direct-drive the platter becomes part of the motor and can pick up motor noise. Direct drive is also constantly correcting the speed, so it’s less pure.

Belt drive gives you the advantage of isolating the platter from the motor as little to no noise passes through the belt. Once the platter gets up to speed, the speed is usually very consistent.

For over 40 years, Rega has opted for belt-drive designs, and the P1 (even at a great beginner price) is no exception. Rega likes to use a lightweight plinth to help any external noise filter out through the turntables feet. In the case of the P1, the plinth is a sandwich melamine construction wrapped in a high pressure acrylic laminate. This type of design also cancels noise out by having different thicknesses of materials.

The platter is the large circular disk that the vinyl record sits on. The P1’s platter is made of a heavy phenolic material. It is thicker and heavier around the outer edge, giving it a better flywheel effect, which leads to more consistent speeds. All of the Rega turntables above the Planar 1 use an even heavier glass platter, but this is a great way to get most of the benefits while still keeping the cost of the P1 reasonable.

While many other turntable brands out there just use other manufacturers tonearms, Rega makes their own. Their arms have been winning awards for years. The Rega P1 uses the new RB110 tonearm. It’s specifically designed to work with the Rega Carbon moving magnet phono cartridge, which comes pre-mounted on the P1. It doesn’t offer as many adjustments as some of Rega’s other arms do, but for the money, it’s a great tonearm.

When it comes to the bearings, it’s important that they be tight but provide as little friction as possible. Many turntables we test fail when we get to this part of the evaluation. It’s pretty easy to test by carefully grasping the tonearm at the front and moving it front to back to see if there is any play in the bearing. We call that bearing chatter.

From there, zero balance the arm and see if it moves freely from side to side. You’ll want to be careful of your stylus when you do this, as they’re very delicate and can break or bend easily. Needless to say, the RB110 on the Planar 1 passes the test with flying colors.

The main bearing, which the platter sits on, is another extremely important part of any turntable. If the bearing creates any kind of noise at all, it can be transmitted up the platter and eventually to the stylus. You may have heard this in some less expensive turntables in the form of a background rumble.

The P1 has a bearing that is very similar to the one use in their more expensive Planar 2. The hub that the outer platter sits on is made of a phenolic material with a stainless steel spindle that drops down into a bronze bearing well. You’ll notice that when you first install the inner hub, it will fit in perfectly. Place the outer platter on, give it a spin, and we bet you won’t hear the slightest hint of noise.

All Rega tables also use 24-volt brushless motors that are isolated from the plinth. The feet are made of a new, ultra-lightweight rubber material called Santoprene. They are hollow cones with aluminum reinforcement trim rings. The feet are a crucial component of the table as they are designed to filter out any external energy through them.

The feet are attached to the new plinth, constructed from a new, ultra-lightweight Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core that is sandwiched between two layers of ultra-thin high-pressure laminate. Tancast 8 was developed for the aerospace industry and it turns out is a great material for the type of design Rega deploys in their tables.

According to the engineers from Rega that we spoke with, this new plinth is a true breakthrough in material technology and offers big performance improvements over their previous designs.

The main bearing is Rega’s classic brass bearing, but with the Planar 6 they step up to a single-piece machined aluminum hub. The hub is the small round part that goes down into the bearing. The larger outer platter sits on top of the hub. The outer platter only touches the hub in a few spots along its outer edge where there are tiny raised pieces on the top of the hub.

The Planar 6 has a dual layer float glass platter. It has more glass around about the middle 50% and out for a better flywheel effect to keep speed consistent. As you might suspect, float glass is super flat, which also helps keep things spinning at a perfect pitch.

To drive the hub, Rega includes their new white Reference belt with the Planar 6. This is machined to a higher tolerance than their standard belt. They also developed a new custom spindle for the motor side of the belt that is tapered to reduce friction.

The motor itself is a low-noise 24-volt design. Each motor is individually tuned to the external Neo power supply that comes with the Planar 6. The Neo PSU uses a DSP-based sinewave generator and a high-precision crystal clock oscillator to generate a super-consistent speed. The speed can be fine-tuned with a little screw on the back side of the Neo PSU. The AC power cable attaches to the Neo PSU and it connects to the Planar 6 with a custom cable. Having an external motor power supply is a great way to reduce any noise from a power supply that your phono cartridge might otherwise pick up. This is not unique to Rega as many high-performance turntables use this method.

Like Rega’s other high-performance tables, the Planar 6 has an aluminum brace that locks the tonearm base to the main bearing. The tonearm used on the Planar 6 is their relatively new RB330 which was introduced with the new Planar 3. The RB330 is an engineering feat in and of itself with its zero tolerance bearings. We loved it on the Planar 3 and think it is a great match for the Planar 6 as well.

As we mentioned earlier, the Planar 6 is available without a cartridge or you can purchase one of the packages that include either the Exact or Ania. The tonearm cables are non-detachable but are very high-quality with great materials and solid connections.

Finally, the Rega Planar 6 includes a dust cover that appears to have a slight grey tin, rather than the clear covers that come with the Rega Planar 1, 2, and 3.

Performance

Before we get into this, let us just say that we may have gone a little overboard on our setup rig to listen to the new Planar 6. First, when you hold the Tru-Lift, you can tell this is not a toy, it is very heavy and built with precision. It comes with a bit of this sticky stuff called Blu-Tack. You’ll see a little round rod which runs parallel to the surface of your turntable. This rod is in a cylinder that allows it to move up slowly, just like the cueing lever on your turntable.

You press down on it to put it in the “armed” position and it’s held there by a small piece of wire that then goes up at a 90 degree angle. It only engages when it should.

You basically position it on the surface of your turntable so that when your tonearm goes into the lead out groove, it hits the trigger and the rod lifts your tonearm up off the record. The lifting mechanism is a fixed height, but if you have looked at many turntables you know that the distance between the tonearm and the plinth can vary quite a bit due to the various heights of turntable platters. We can help you determine which model you need for your specific turntable.

Some turntables have very tall platters and may require a Tru-Lift with a more robust base to keep it stable. When it came to producing quality sound, most people back then thought only about the speakers and not as much about the turntable itself. Roy understood what any true audio enthusiast understands -- that every aspect affects the sound, from the source to the speakers.

By 1973, Roy was building turntables at home in his spare time. In 1975 he produced the Planar 2, followed in 1977 by the Planar 3. Move ahead over 40 years and over 2,000 Rega turntables come off their line every month, thanks to the booming vinyl revival.

Today, their team of engineers is focused on advancing the art of turntables, while sticking to their roots. This is a complete overhaul of the Rega RP1 which came before it. Due to its great quality build and sound, as well as it’s sub $500 price, the Planar 1 has quickly become one of the most popular entry-level turntables in the world.

Design & Build Quality

The Planar 1 (which we will refer to interchangeably as the P1 as well throughout this review) is a manual, belt-drive turntable, like many of the best high-performance turntables in the world.

There are several reasons why these types of turntables are so popular.

When it comes to the way the platter is spun, there are three different types of turntables -- idler wheel, direct-drive, and belt-drive.

In addition, the motor is suspended on an isolation system that reduces noise even further.

The Planar 1 is also a manual turntable.

They’ve perfected this design over the years to the point where the motor provides a solid speed to the pulley.

In 2018 Rega added a new model to the series, a Planar 1 Plus. The Plus is identical to the Planar 1, with the addition of a built in phono preamp. The phono preamp is designed to work great with the Rega Carbon cartridge supplied with the Planar 1. This allows the Planar 1 Plus to be easily connected to a pair of powered speakers or a system lacking a phono preamp. The only thing to consider is the built in phono preamp is always on. Should you ever want to purchase a better phono preamp, it would not work with the Planar 1 Plus.

As you can see, at least in the theory, the tech is all there! Now let’s talk about how it sounds.

Performance

The Rega P1 is super simple to set up. Product Overview

In 1973, Roy Gandy formed what was destined to become one of the most famous companies in British audio. Like many of the audio startups of the time, Rega began in his garage, which turned out to be very close to their current factory in the UK. For 45 years, Rega has been all about producing very high value products that can also stand the test of time. It seems like almost once a month we see a very old Rega coming into our shop for an update to a new cartridge. We usually put a new belt on these and they are good for another long period of time.

Rega’s engineering staff has a different philosophy than many other HiFi companies. While many companies feel like they must produce new models every year or so just to keep things fresh, Rega only makes a change when they have discovered enough engineering improvements to make a big improvement in performance.

Many times this performance improvement results in an update to an older model. Over the last few years, this has been the case with the Rega turntable line up. We’ve seen the RP1 go the the P1, the RP2 go to the P2, and the RP3 move up to a P3. Based upon that information, you might think that we are moving from an RP8 to a P8 and the same thing is happening. However, in this case, the new Planar 8 is actually based on Rega’s 40th anniversary no holds barred Naiad that sells for 45,000 US. Their engineers wanted to make a much more affordable version of the Naiad. The result of their design and research led them to a model that fell at about the same price range as the older RP8, so while it does replace it, it also has more performance upgrades than we usually see when Rega upgrades a model!

Rega is well known for the high performance phono cartridges and usually bundles them with their tables for a decent savings. This is the case with the Planar 8 as well. You can get it without a cartridge for $3,495, with their Ania moving coil for $4,145, with their Ania Pro moving coil for $4,475, or with their Apheta 3 moving coil for $4,945.

Since the Apheta combo is such a good deal, we used that set up for our testing in this review.

Design & Build Quality

Since the Planar 8 is based on the Rega Naiad, we thought it would be fun to spend a little time on the Naiad itself.

Rega has always had 3 core design philosophies they adhere to on every turntable they make.

The first is to keep the platter spinning at the most constant speed possible. Secondly, Rega wants to minimize vibrations by using a very light and stiff subchassis designed to keep any external resonances from making their way into the table Finally, they want to deliver a tonearm/cartridge combination that extracts as much information as possible out of your record grooves.

When Rega designed the Naiad, they took most of this to the very extreme! First, they made the subchassis super small and constructed it out of hand carved carbon fiber. The bracing was made out of a lightweight ceramic material. The tonearm uses titanium in several places and they decided to use Zirconia for the hub, spindle, and bearing. It's no wonder this literal jewel of a turntable sells for almost $45,000!

Like the Naiad, the P8 is a very unique looking turntable and far different than most of the other Rega models. This is due to the engineers trying to make the P8 as light and stiff as possible. To many, it will look like an audio work of art sitting in your system.

All Rega turntables are manual in design, which means you do all the work, but also get the great sound a manual turntable offers. These are made from a super lightweight rubber material called Santoprene. The feet are hollow with reinforcement trim rings made of aluminum. Rega chose to use this same type of foot on the Planar 8 and we must say they are great keeping external energy away from the table.

The feet attach to a unique plinth design that comes from the learnings Rega discovered in the Niaid. It is a skeletal structure made out of a material that came from the aerospace industry, Tancast 8. The P6 was the first table from Rega to use this great new material. Tancast 8 is a polyurethane foam core sandwiched between two layers of black high pressure laminate. The engineers at Rega we have spoken to feel Tancast 8 is a breakthrough material for turntables. We expect we will see it in all of Rega’s new designs in the higher end price ranges. On the Planar 6, the edges of the foam core are covered in laminate, but to reduce mass even more, Rega leaves the edges naked in the Planar 8. This great design reduces energy absorption and unwanted resonances from getting into the playback system. You’ll see other turntable makers use a huge, heavy plinth, while Rega takes the opposite approach, and we must say the proof is in the listening and their design comes to deliver an amazing clean sound.

When we move on to the hub and turntable bearing assembly, we once again see designs drawn from the Naiad. This is attached to a hardened steel spindle which sits inside a custom brass housing using a new design that filtered down from the Naiad. This new mounting design keeps energy from transferring down to the plinth. Rega also incorporated a similar hub and subplatter system in the new Planar 6.

Moving on to the platter, we find Rega’s classic glass platter design. The platter is super critical in keeping things spinning at a constant speed. One way to have good speed consistency is to use a very heavy platter, and as we all know, once something heavy gets moving, it tends to keep moving. However, a heavy platter can put more strain than is needed on the turntable bearing, so Rega uses a method to have the best of both worlds. The Planar 8 has a triple glass platter with most of the thickness on the perimeter of the platter. This gives a great flywheel effect for excellent speed stability, but keeps things lighter than if the whole platter was this thickness, very clever! The RP8 also used a triple glass platter as well.

With the Naiad, Rega learned that isolating the motor to the nth degree can have a big impact on performance.. This new motor mounting principal is another design that derived from the Naiad. Unlike most other Rega tables, the Planar 8 motor is mounted from the bottom using a new coupling technique. The bottom mount reduces stress on the motor and prevents unwanted energy transferring into the plinth. You’ll also notice the motor pulley has two precision slots for the dual belt system. Like the Planar 6, the Planar 8 comes with the Neo outboard speed control box. However, with the P8, each motor is hand tuned to the Neo that comes with it for even better speed stability.

The engineering team at Rega has been doing some homework with chemists over the last three years to try and come up with a better material for turntable belts. This new type of belt is called the EBLT drive belt. Rega and the chemists came up with a special curing system that gives a more consistent elasticity which is pretty important in a turntable belt. The $40,000 Naiad uses 3 belts, so it was no surprise to see 2 on the Planar 8. The multi-belt system gives even better speed consistency. This is just another thing you don’t see, but that is going on behind the scenes to give you better sound.

The Neo PSU speed control box is pretty interesting as well. It uses a specially designed DSP circuit that gets its reference from a very stable crystal. This can feed a perfect AC signal to the 24V AC motor. The beauty of this design is not affected by the power coming out of your wall, which as we all know can vary a lot over time. You’ll have perfect speed irrespective of how good or bad your AC power is over time. Rega then fine tunes the Neo to the motor in that exact Planar 8. Another advantage of having the motor speed control away from the turntable is the reduction in any possible noise. This idea is not new to Rega, as several high performance turntables have a separate power supply for the motor. The Neo also makes switching from 33 to 45 happen with just the push of a button.

We finally get to the tonearm, another new design called the RB880. The Planar 6 uses the RB330, the same arm found on the Planar 3, but the Planar 8 gets a jump to the RB880. This aluminum and stainless steel beauty has far better tonearm bearings than their other models, with tolerances down to 1000th of a millimeter! They also improved the bearing structure in the RB880. There is absolutely zero chatter in the bearing (a pet peeve of ours) and it just feels totally free of any friction.

We also like the three point mounting system Rega incorporates in their better tonearms. When coupled with one of their higher performance cartridges, this assures you of a perfectly aligned cartridge.

The phono cables coming out of the Planar 8 are of very high quality and even have locking RCA ends for a tight fitting connection. They are a hard wired connection all the way through, so they are not detachable.

When you think about all this great new tech Rega put into the Planar 8, you can be sure it's going to be a great performer.

Performance

For testing the Planar 8 we set up the new Cambridge Audio Edge NQ preamp with the Edge W power amp, with the new EGlo Phono stage from EAT. Rega will probably be mad at us for not using theirs, but we wanted to give this guy a whirl too! Before we started listening, we cleaned all of the records on the Ultra Disc cleaning machine.

The first track we tried was “Under the Boardwalk/Sand In My Shoes” from the Persuasions’ No Frills album. This was a very popular demo cut we used to play a lot back in the late 80s and it was fun to pull it out again. The very first thing that jumped out was the total silence in between the notes. We have found that as you move up to better and better turntables, the level of surface noise you hear goes down dramatically. The Planar 8 was outstanding in this regard! The only noise we ever heard was when there was a scratch on the LP causing a pop. The track is all acapella with lots of rhythm. The four male vocalists each stood out with fantastic sound staging. We were quickly tapping our toes to this great version of a classic song.

Next up was John Prine’s Bruised Orange album from 1978 (the year Audio Advice opened for business). One of our all time favorite cuts is on this album: That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round”. This is full of great harmonies, but the true test is being able to hear the overdubbing of the recorders and being able to separate out the penny whistle playing at the same time. The bass track on this album can be over bloomed if the system is not right, but with the combination we had set up for this listening session, the sound was just magical. Every instrument stood out and the whole recording felt super energetic. We think this is one of the big pros of the Planar 8, the music just seems to come to life! Dynamics are incredible. Another thing about this recording is you need a cartridge/tonearm combination that can track really well to make it through with no distortion. The combination of the new RB880 arm with the Apheta 3 tracks about as well as anything we have ever heard. It sailed through this and some of the other more difficult passages.

And speaking of hard to track with lots going on, we pulled out The Neophonic String Band’s title album from 1977 on Direct Disk Labs. This one has lots of strings with several very hard to track vocal cuts but the Planar 8 just ate it up, making all of the instruments come to life. The harmonics on the strings were just rich as all get out on “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and we never sensed any strain in the vocals on “In the Pines”. We also found ourselves tapping both feet to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown”!

Finally, we grabbed another Direct to Disc, this time from JVC Japan, Sugarloaf Express recorded in 1977. This album features Lee Ritenour and a host of other great jazz musicians. If you like jazz and run across this one in the used bins, be sure and pick it up. The title track starts out with some very dynamic percussion with lots of cymbal action. The Planar 8 put these right up front and crystal clear. In contrast to this, Ritenour’s electric guitar comes in very smooth and softly in the background before taking over. This was just beautiful with the Planar 8!

You know you have a great system put together when all you want to do is pull out more vinyl and when other people coming into the room they just stop and listen, which is exactly what happened with this testing system.

Overall Recommendation

As we said, you can get the Planar 8 in three versions. If you have a great cartridge already that will work with the RB880 arm, you might consider the model without a cartridge. However, we feel, the combination with the Apheta 3 is unquestionably the way to go. The cartridge mates perfectly with the RB880 arm and Rega’s method of turntable isolation used in the Planar 8. The sound that combo produces is full of energy, separates instruments amazingly well, tracks like crazy, and gives you a totally silent background. Plus it is just one heck of a lot of fun to listen to! It is a great example of British sound that is true to the music.

We also have reviews of the Rega Planar 1, Planar 2, Planar 3, and Planar 6.

Suitable for MM and MC cartridges

Precise RIAA equalization

Ultra-low noise circuitry

Selection between 2 phono inputs & 2 line outputs

Dual mono circuitry for optimized channel separation

Selectable input impedance (for MC: fix or variable)

LxWxH=8.11x8.93x3.58

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0572/3281/8260/files/httpswww.audioadvice.compubmediacatalogproducttutubebox1_1.jpg?v=1718138218
integrityhifi-tru-sweep-dust-cleaner-sweeper-large
Integrityhifi Tru-Sweep Dust Cleaner & Sweeper

Each unit is adjustable in height by 3/8". The main bearing construction Pro-Ject uses is a similar system as the one on the Vienna Philharmonic Record player.

The diamond-cut precision alu sub-platter, like in the limited edition Vienna Philharmonic Record player, enables much improved tolerances. This extraordinarily sophisticated part is accurately machined and guarantees very good isolation between bearing noise and the platter itself.

New carbon/aluminum tonearm

The radical new designed Classic tonearm is the result of 25 years of experience in mechanical construction. The tonearm tube is made out of a sandwich of carbon and aluminium: carbon for stiffness and speed, alu for better damping. The bearing has been upgraded to the same type that is used on Pro-Ject's CC EVO tonearms. It facilitates frictionless vertical and horizontal movement, guaranteeing precise tracking across the entire duration of the record. The counterweight incorporates a TPE* damper which allows us to reduce the amplitude of the tonearm cartridge resonance frequency by 50%. As typical for Pro-Ject and absolutely not standard at that price range Pro-Ject offers also azimuth and VTA adjustment to use a variety of cartridges.

Cartridge

Pro-Ject supplies as standard the Sumiko Moonstone phono cartridge. Heinz founded Pro-Ject in 1991 with the desire to bring high-performance audio down in price by using great manufacturing processes coupled with economies of scale. Almost all of the Pro-Ject components are designed at their engineering facility in Austria and manufactured at their plants in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. By controlling all parts of the production process and making components that have wide appeal, Pro-Ject Audio has carved out a niche of giving you both high performance and value.

The turntable revolution has certainly helped play a large role in the worldwide success of Pro-Ject Audio. Their Debut Carbon model, which has gone through a few revisions over time, is probably the world’s best selling turntable over $200. It is certainly a big hit at Audio Advice as they seem to come in and go out by the pallet load! To go along with their turntables that span from as low as around $250 to as high as $14,000, Pro-Ject also makes phono stages, DAC’s, preamps, and power amps. Their phono stages are also extremely popular as they give you a ton of bang for the buck.

Today’s review is on a brand new turntable line up from Pro-Ject Audio that comes in under their popular Debut Carbon DC series. Many years in the planning, the new Pro-Ject T1 series offers up a lot of technology you’ll see in much more expensive turntables from around the world. The initial launch consists of a T1 table that comes complete with an Ortofon phono cartridge, and the T1 Phono SB with the addition of a built-in phono stage. Later on, Pro-Ject will add a Bluetooth table to the series.

Packaging, Design & Build Quality

Like almost all great turntables where audio performance is the most important aspect, the T1 series are manual, belt-drive turntables. In the world of turntables, manual means you start the platter spinning with a button push, move the tonearm over the record, lower it using the cue mechanism, and when the record ends, you lift the tonearm up using the cue. If you think about it, this design uses the least amount of moving parts, which means there is nothing to add noise or vibrations to the signal.

Belt drive turntables are also the defacto standard for most high-performance turntables for a couple of reasons. First, with direct drive, the platter sits right on top of the motor. Any motor noise present will be transmitted up to the platter and make its way to your phono cartridge. With a belt drive design, the motor is off to the side of the platter and connected with a belt. The belt keeps any motor noise from getting to the platter. Belt drive turntables, if properly designed, also have better speed stability than most direct drive turntables. With direct drive, the motor is constantly making adjustments to keep things at a steady speed. However, our ears can detect these micro-adjustments and the sound just does not come off as exciting and involving. While direct drive tables instantly come up to speed, belt drive tables take a few seconds to get up to speed, but once they do, the weight of the platter creates a flywheel effect that keeps them spinning at a very constant speed. This constant speed makes the sound more like real life.

Of course, you can make a mess or success of either design, but as a general rule, almost all of the great turntables are manual and belt drive like the new T1 series.

When we first looked at the T1, we were super impressed with the way it is put together. The Pro-Ject Audio factories have some pretty serious equipment for turning our consistent product results. The T1 seems to be made just as well as their other tables costing 2-3 times its price.

Features & Technology

The list of features and tech found in the new T1 tables is very impressive when you consider their modest price. We will start from the bottom and work our way up.

The three feet for the T1 are vibration resistant to help isolate the T1 from picking up vibrations from nearby speakers. We still feel you want to try and isolate any turntable from large speakers capable of deep bass.

The plinth is CNC machined out of a solid, composite material. It is a combination of MDF with a foil wrap to reduce resonance. Pro-Ject chose this material to reduce any vibrations inside the plinth. There are three finishes available: high gloss black, satin white, or walnut. The motor is mounted to the plinth with isolation material in between. Pro-Ject also uses an advanced electronic control system for the motor to ensure it spins at a constant speed.

Pro-Ject designed a new sub-platter for the T1 series and mounted it to a very precision main bearing with tolerances down to .001mm. The bearing is identical to the one used in the Pro-Ject Essential III table with a hardened steel axle and brass bushing.

One big deal on the new T1 is the blasted glass main platter. This type of platter is normally seen on tables costing much more. With a heavy glass platter (3 pounds, we weighed it!), you get a great flywheel effect, improving speed stability. Offering a glass platter at this low price is clearly a jab at one of Pro-Ject’s main competitors who offer many tables with glass platters incorporating a more high tech design on most of them, but at higher price points. The whole table weighs in at about 8.3 pounds. The included felt mat tops off the glass platter.

The tonearm on the T1 is a brand new design from the Pro-Ject team. It is the same effective length (8.6”) as the one on the Debut Carbon DC but is a one-piece design to reduce resonance. The rear counterweight is decoupled from the arm. If you need to adjust the tracking force, it slides forwards and backward with a set screw to lock it down when you are done adjusting. The bearing assembly on the tonearm is pretty massive for something in this price range. Pro-Ject developed a new bearing that has very low friction. Unlike the arm on the Debut Carbon, you will not have a way to adjust the vertical tracking angle as this arm has a fixed height. However, according to Pro-Ject, the arm is specifically designed to be a perfect match to the included Ortofon elliptical OM5E cartridge (a great $70 cartridge). We like this trade-off they made. Rather than trying to make the arm compatible (more expensive) with any possible cartridge, they made it work perfectly with the cartridge 99% of the people who buy this table will wind up keeping.

Speaking of the cartridge, many other turntables in this price range that come with a cartridge will have one with a spherical stylus. For more details, check out our turntable buyers guide, but in a nutshell, an elliptical stylus has more contact with the grooves of your record, allowing it to pick up more of those subtle audio nuances. You’ll get Danish engineering on the T1 with the included OM5E. It also has a user-replaceable stylus when it's worn out and time to replace.

The Phono SB model of the T1 has a few differences besides the included phono stage. First, we talked with Pro-Ject and found the built-in phono stage is a cross between their E series and MM series moving magnet phono preamp. Due to the fact that it's connected directly to the tonearm cables internally (think super short signal path), the performance is far better than even the MM separately. Plus it is perfectly tuned to the Ortofon OM5E. If you do not have a phono stage, we recommend you just go ahead and get the T1 Phono SB. Another nice part is should you decide to upgrade the built-in phono stage, you can easily bypass it with a slide switch under the base of the turntable.

The Phono SB model also gives you the convenience of electronic switching between 33 and 45. There are two little buttons located on the top of the plinth to change speed. With the regular T1, you simply remove the main platter and move the belt on the motor pulley.

You’ll also get some pretty high-performance cables with both tables. Pro-Ject gives you their $69 Connect It cables that are a very low capacitance design. On the Phono SB version, these are removable, whereas on the regular T1 they are fixed.

With all of these cool features, we could not wait to test out the T1!

Performance

Set up is another bonus we noticed when we unpacked the T1. Everything is pre-mounted, aligned and balanced from the factory. All you have to do is make the audio connections, put the belt on, add the outer glass platter, connect the power supply and you are done.

As usual, we decided to connect it up to a system probably beyond what most people would use with it just to see how it really sounded. For this test, we used the B&W 703S2 speakers with an Arcam SA20 integrated amp. This system had a MoFi Ultradeck in it we swapped out for the T1. The T1 we tested was the version with the built-in phono stage.

Pro-Ject’s product blurb on the T1 says it has a rich, lively sound. After listening, this seems to be a pretty accurate assessment. We decided to pull out a classic album, Joan Baez, Diamonds and Rust. We had a copy of the Half-Speed Mastered Nautilus version around.

The first thing we noticed was how well this table and cartridge combo tracked. There was very little surface noise and minimal breakup when things got really complicated. On the title track, the guitars jumped out into the room just like they do on a much more expensive setup. Focus and imaging were also very good. On some of the cuts with more rhythm and pacing, we found ourselves tapping our toes to the music, a good sign.

The built-in phono stage of the T1 works really well with the Ortofon. Just for grins, we compared it to a Sutherland Insight (yes, we know, this is crazy, the Insight alone is $1400) and while the Insight was a lot better, it showed us how decent the built-in phono stage is. The comparison showed more of what was missing than anything the built-in one was doing wrong.

Our only reservation, and we have to put this in context as all turntables in this price range behave like this, the deep bass is much less defined and detailed than on a really great turntable. So, while the T1 did not surprise us with revolutionary bass for this price category, it was full and musical, just as Pro-Ject described.

Overall Recommendation

Pro-Ject has obviously reset the bar for entry-level performance turntables with the new T1 series. You will be hard-pressed to find a table in this price range with the plethora of tech found in the T1. If you are just getting into tables and do not have a phono stage, we suggest the T1 Phono SB model with the built-in phono stage. However, if your system already has a phono preamp, the T1 will be an excellent choice. There is one other consideration though. If you are a tinkerer and think you might want to play around with different phono cartridges in the future, the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC is probably a better choice for just a bit more. At $399 it has a fully adjustable tonearm, upgrade options for a few of its components, and comes with an even better $100 Ortofon Red cartridge. Should you consider going beyond $400 in your turntable investment, we find you hear big improvements in turntables as you move up. The improvements as you move up are pretty easy to hear each time you listen to a better one. Remember the sound begins at your table, so the better the table, the more music you’ll pull off your records. The choice really comes down to how deep you see yourself getting into the world of vinyl fun!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0572/3281/8260/files/pj-t1-high-gloss-black_dustcover-front-cutout.jpg?v=1718138481
rega-planar-10-turntable-aphelion2-cartridge
Rega Planar 10 Turntable

Company & Product Overview

Around 47 years ago, in 1973, Roy Gandy had an idea that he could make a better turntable for the money than anything else on the market. He started working on his products in his garage which funny enough, turned out to be pretty close to Rega’s factory in the UK. We suspect he had no idea back in 1973 where the company would be today, but we sure are happy he had a dream that turned into some of the very best turntables in the world. Rega tables not only have great performance but seem to last forever. However, there is no question, the Planar 10 just looks super cool with the dust cover off!

The Planar 10 is like all other Rega turntables and is a manual design. It will be up to you to move the arm over the record, lower it down using the cue and pick it up at the end. This little extra effort gives you a big bonus in much better sound which is why 99% of all the best turntables are a manual design.

We think anyone getting a Planar 10 will want an outboard phono stage unless their rig has a very serious one built-in. Most people will probably opt for the Apheta 3 cartridge which is a moving coil design. Rega’s Aria phono preamp should be a great match for the Planar 10/Apheta 3 combo.

With the Planar 10, there is not a whole lot to say about build quality except it is just amazing! All Rega products are made extremely well, but when you get to their upper-end models, the build is outstanding. You can tell from the minute you start taking it out of the box, the Planar 10 is built to last for decades!

Features & Technology

Rather than just improve on the RP10 design, Rega wanted to make the Planar 10 as close as they could to the performance of the Naiad while keeping the price reasonable for a turntable of this level.

Rega is no stranger to the use of high tech materials and you’ll find plenty of them in the Planar 10! Their goal was to reduce mass, increase rigidity, and improve speed accuracy through the use of great design and the best possible materials. As you’ll see here, the Planar 10 is packed with parts that help bring it closer to the Naiad!

With most of our turntable overviews, we like to start from the bottom and work up, which we will do here with the Planar 10.

The feet on the Planar 10 are the same as those on the Planar 8 and as a matter of fact, came out when they developed the Planar 6. Rega used a very lightweight rubber material for the feet called Santoprene. These are hollow with an aluminum ring that goes in between the foot and the plinth. Rega developed these as the first step in keeping vibrations from getting into the turntable.

The plinth design on the Planar 10 comes directly from what Rega learned when making their no holds barred Naiad turntable. This design was first used in the Planar 6, then modified for the Planar 8 which shares the same type of plinth. You get a concept of just how lightweight the plinth is when you start unpacking the Planar 10. Rega uses material from the aerospace industry called Tancast 8. Tancast 8 is a polyurethane foam core that Rega sandwiches between high pressure laminate. The laminate is super thin yet very rigid. The Tancast 8 coupled with the HPL (high-pressure laminate) appears to be a great way to get close to the much more expensive carbon fiber plinth’s characteristics found on the Naiad turntable. On the Planar 8 and Planar 10, Rega leaves the edges open and greatly reduces the size of the plinth to reduce mass even more. If you look at a Planar 8 or 10, you’ll see that the plinth is cut out to just have what is necessary to hold the other critical components. The plinth is basically just a skeleton for the feet, motor mount, bearing, and tonearm. The new Planar 10 plinth is actually 30% lighter than the one found on the RP10 model it replaced.

When you look closely at Rega turntables starting with the Planar 3, you’ll notice a structure that sits on top of the plinth and couples the tonearm mount to the platter bearing. This is Rega’s famous double bracing design. On the Planar 10, Rega uses a ceramic top brace and phenolic resin bottom brace to increase rigidity between tonearm mount and main platter bearing. Rather than making the brace a solid piece of material, Rega reduces mass and cuts out most of the material much in the way a structural beam is made. This double brace design helps the cartridge/arm combination pick up even more information in those delicate record grooves! Plus we love the way the ceramic top part of the brace matches the platter too!

When you have a high performance audio system, anything that is added to the music can take away from your enjoyment. On turntables, one of the most important things we have found is the quality of the bearing. We suspect this is why on some turntables the silence between the notes sounds even more silent than normal. If you think about it, any noise made by the bearing sitting under the platter will get transmitted up to the platter and picked up by your stylus. When Rega came out with the Planar 8, they developed a new low mass central bearing assembly. The subplatter is single machined piece of aluminum with a hardened steel spindle that sits inside a custom brass housing. Rega took this design and improved the mechanical integrity even more for a main bearing that is about as good as anything we have seen. Of course, this all trickled down from what they learned in the Naiad as they tried to get as close as possible to the integrity of its hub assembly.

When you talk about space age materials, Rega can surely brag about the ceramic used for both the main platter and top brace. The RP10 had a similar ceramic platter. As our Rega rep told us, it’s made for them by a company that produces nose cones for missiles out of the same material! Ceramic oxide powder is compressed, fired, then diamond cut for a marvelous finished product. The platter itself is quite heavy and Rega gives it a flywheel effect by adding mass around the outer edge. We’ve talked about this in other turntable reviews, but for those of you wondering about the flywheel effect it's a great idea. On a turntable, unless you are a DJ, it really does not matter if it comes up to speed instantly. Most people push the on button then a few seconds pass before they lower the stylus. One goal of a turntable is to spin at a perfect speed. If you have a round disc, with a heavier outer edge, this keeps it spinning more constantly with minimal variation. Yes, it may take a few seconds to get up to speed, but once it gets there, it's more likely to stay constant. Weighting the outer edge gives it this flywheel effect. And we have to say, the ceramic platter looks and feels even cooler than their famous float glass designs!

When Rega designed the Naiad turntable they came up with a motor mounting system that was different than anything they had done before. This originally carried over to the Planar 8 and was improved upon even more on the Planar 10. They mount their precision 24v low vibration motor from the bottom. This keeps any stress from being put on the motor while at the same time holding it perfectly still for better speed stability. It also keeps any energy from being transferred to the plinth. Rega also individually matches up each motor with the external power supply. This does two things for the sound. Speed is as good as it gets and by matching up the electronics of the outboard power supply to the motor, motor vibrations are reduced, pretty cool!

The motor pulley has two precision slots for the dual belt system. This is another level of tech derived from the Naiad and used in both the Planar 8 and Planar 10. The belts themselves are pretty special too. Being a maker of belt drive turntables, you can imagine the Rega team is always interested in new and better materials for their belts. They did a lot of work with a team of chemists and ultimately came up with a new belt material called EBLT. Rega and the chemists developed a new curing system for this material that gave it a more consistent elasticity. Now that they had this great material, they had to figure out a way to machine it into a belt that was as round as could possibly be made. They teamed up with a company that makes motor parts for Formula 1 racing cars to design their own machine to precisely create this new belt. Think about that for a minute. They developed a new material, then built their own machine to produce it so it would give you perfect speed. While many companies buy off the shelf generic belts, Rega goes to this length for better sound!

Rega also goes to great lengths to power the precision motor. With the Planar 10, you get an external power supply called the PL10 PSU. The electronics inside are the same as those used in the RP10, but they improved the chassis that houses them. They use a very high stability crystal to generate a perfect square wave. This wave is then manipulated using digital signal processing to give the motor a perfect and constant power signal. Then, each and every one is fine tuned to make the motor run as smoothly as possible. This system also means the motor gets a perfect signal no matter how bad the power coming out of your wall is. The PL10 PSU also gives you the convenience of being able to switch from 33 to 45 with the push of a button.

When you backtrack through the bearing, spindle, platter, motor, belts, and motor power supply, you see all of the attention Rega puts into the Planar 10 just simply to spin the platter. It seems like overkill, but boy oh boy, when you get perfect speed, magical things happen to your sound!

Now we are getting to the last few, but very important parts of the Planar 10. First we have the brand new RP3000 tonearm. Rega tonearms have always had some of the best bearings we have seen on turntables. They take pride in very tight tolerances. On some entry level turntables you can wiggle the arm around and even feel some play in the bearings. We’ve never encountered this on a Rega and they seem to keep improving their bearing technology with each new model. Rega set out to find a way to machine their tonearm bearings down to a 1 micron accuracy. This allowed them to assemble the entire tonearm with no adhesive at any point during its construction. You may wonder what is so important about tonearm bearings.

If you think about the size of the tiny modulations in the grooves of a record, it's pretty simple. You want your stylus to pick up as many of these modulations as possible. If your tonearm has friction going either up, down, left, or right, your stylus will not have a chance to pick those subtle modulations up. Also, if the tonearm wobbles in any way at all, it could cancel out some of the signal coming from the grooves.

The RB3000 also uses a very low mass aluminum arm tube they designed to reduce resonance and stress. You’ll set the stylus pressure the conventional way using a zero balance then turning a knob. Rega has a pretty unique antiskate adjustment on the RB3000 which we really like. It is a little tube you pull out from the arm, with antiskating force going towards zero as you pull it out. There are markings for tracking force, but this should be pretty cool to use with an antiskate test record to really dial it in. We can’t wait to try this out when we get our demo Planar 10.

The tonearm cables, like all Rega tables, are not detachable and these look like they are made of very high quality materials. They are hard wired from the tonearm all the way to the locking RCA connectors.

If you get the Rega Planar 10 with one of the better Rega cartridges, you’ll be able to take advantage of their three point mounting system. While we are talking about Rega cartridges, we should also mention the package with the Apheta cartridge.

When we tested the Apheta 2 with the Planar 8, we fell in love with the combination. There is definitely something to be said for getting the phono cartridge from the same company that makes your turntable. When you think about it, Rega puts all of the effort you have just read about to make a perfect platform for your phono cartridge. A Rega cartridge is designed to drop into this beautifully designed system and perform as best as it can. Rega designs their cartridges to match up perfectly with their tonearms and tables.

The Apheta 3 takes the amazing sounding Apheta 2 and gets a new and improved stylus assembly. The Apheta 3 was designed side by side with the Planar 10 as Rega tried to make a cartridge closer in performance to their reference Aphelion cartridge. They developed a new fine line diamond tip, designed to reach even further into the record grooves to extract more information. It is then mounted through a slot in the end of the Apheta 3 cantilever. We can’t wait to give this a serious listening test.

As you can see from all this great tech, the Planar 10 is an impressive turntable. After hearing the Planar 8 Apheta 2 combo and being bowled over, we can not wait to hear the Planar 10 with the Apheta 3.

Performance

We got to hear the Planar 10 for a few brief moments. We heard it at our Music Matters event in Charlotte connected up to a McIntosh stack driving a set of Martin Logan electrostatic speakers. Unfortunately, this setup was out in our main lobby so crowd noise made it hard to tell much, until at one point things were quieter and the guys from Rega put on an old Johnny Cash LP. The emotion we heard in his voice was spectacular and everyone standing around just stopped talking to listen. Then the crowd got noisy again and before we knew it the team from Rega was packing it up to go off to one of our favorite analog reviewers.

Overall Recommendation

Based upon the very brief listen and the way the Planar 10 is put together, this could be a turntable that rivals the big rigs in the 10K+ range. It is obviously not for everyone, but bear in mind, your system is only as good as the first step, where the sound is pulled from the record. We will know more when we get a demo back in, but we think it's safe to say this is going to be one heck of an amazing table for the price.

3 Sizes available.
