We started out with Encanto because we thought all the music would really put these speakers to the test. We were blown away by the way these speakers painted the voices in the songs across the whole room. This made the movie a much more fun experience being able to clearly hear the different voices coming in and singing in different scenes. If you're looking for an upgrade to your TV's audio, you seriously have to consider these speakers over a soundbar. They sound amazing and have so many more use cases than soundbars at this price point. While on stands, they provide a look that stands out compared to a soundbar below a TV. A really cool option with these would be to add a turntable under your TV and have them both connected at the same time. The name also pays homage to the fact all Kanto products are designed in Canada.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe TUK is a small speaker that is under 11” tall, about 8” deep and 7” wide. It is available in two matte finish colors, black or white.\u003c\/strong\u003e Like many small speakers, the TUK is ported, and in this case, the port is on the rear of the speaker. AMT stands for air motion transformer.\u003c\/strong\u003e This technology was invented by Dr. Heil back in the early ’70s and was famous in a speaker he designed called the ESS AMT1. An AMT tweeter uses a folded membrane, which gives you a lot of surface area in a small space. The sound is effectively “squeezed” out of the driver.\u003cstrong\u003e The result is far less distortion and a high-frequency driver that can get down lower in frequency than most tweeters.\u003c\/strong\u003e AMT tweeters are typically more expensive than a conventional dome tweeter. Kanto chose them for the TUK for their ultra-fast, low distortion characteristics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe woofer of the TUK is also pretty special. It is made out of aluminum.\u003c\/strong\u003e Kanto obviously wanted to spare no expense to squeeze great sound out of a small package by using this much more expensive driver material. Aluminum has very high rigidity and low mass which is ideal for a bass driver. The result is an ability to play much louder with less distortion. An important factor when you have a small box!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou’ll find plenty of input flexibility on the TUK. \u003cstrong\u003eFirst, they include a built-in phono stage for moving magnet cartridges.\u003c\/strong\u003e We were also pleased to see them add an additional set of analog RCA inputs. Many companies just have one set with a switch to make them either phono or line-level analog, but you can do both with the TUK. Connecting up to a TV is easy too with the optical input. Computer audio is no issue either with the USB connection right on the back, plus the TUK has a pretty good built-in USB DAC. \u003cstrong\u003eSo let's see, that is a phono connection, a legacy CD player, tape deck or tuner input, an input for your TV, and a way to connect your computer. What more could you ask for?\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eYes, Kanto covered the one last possibility with a Bluetooth® 4.2 aptX™ HD connection. You’ll be able to charge your phone up with a USB charging port built into the rear. \u003cstrong\u003eAdding a subwoofer is also really easy with the addition of a subwoofer out on the rear of the TUK.\u003c\/strong\u003e Most powered speakers with a subwoofer out simply send an audio signal out to the sub but do not do anything to take the bass away from the speaker when the sub is connected. In the high-performance audio world, this is a big deal. When you route the bass away from a small speaker, the typically small woofer is not asked to move as far since those deep bass frequencies are no longer there (they got sent to the woofer). The end result is not only better bass, but a far more open and transparent midrange presentation. This type of speaker combination with a small pair crossed over to a subwoofer gives you the ability to play things a lot louder as well.  When a small woofer is not being asked to move as far, it can put out more midrange with less breakup on loud passages. \u003cstrong\u003eKanto gives you a way to engage a DSP (digital signal processing) function that kicks in an 80hz crossover, sending only 80hz and above to the TUK and the tones below 80hz to your sub.\u003c\/strong\u003e You’ll get less distortion, cleaner mids and highs, and the ability to crank things up a bit when you couple a sub to the TUK. A great feature!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAnother pretty neat feature the TUK has we have never seen on a powered speaker pair is the ability to flip channels.\u003c\/strong\u003e Powered speakers all have one speaker that has the amp built into it for both speakers and all the connections. The other speaker simply connects up with speaker wire. One of the speakers is designated as the left and one is the right and you really can not change this. The disadvantage of this is a case where your power outlet and components are closer to the speaker without all the connections. Kanto gives you a way, by holding down a button on the supplied remote control to reverse the channels should you need to, very cool.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo reduce power consumption, Kanto built an auto power on\/off feature. This will power down the speaker if it does not see a signal after about 20 minutes, a good way to save a little power. You do have the option of turning this off should you wish with the remote control.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpeaking of the remote, it's a nice little unit that feels good in the palm of your hand. \u003cstrong\u003eAlong with the normal functions, you get some pretty unique features.\u003c\/strong\u003e Many new powered speakers give you an adjustable bass and treble control these days. And most will have a single button to reset them both to flat. Kanto took things a step further. \u003cstrong\u003eFirst, you can select the bass and treble flat reset separately. This is kinda neat should you want to back off on the treble without changing what you had dialed in for the bass. Another first is the ability to assign different bass and treble settings for each input.\u003c\/strong\u003e The TUK comes defaulted to where they are global across all inputs but with a couple of button presses, you can make them unique for each input.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThere is also a sub button on the unit. This will turn the subwoofer outs on and off.\u003c\/strong\u003e For late-night listening, if you have neighbors or a sleeping baby nearby, this will let you still hear some music, without the deep bass. Or for late-night and private listening, the TUK has a headphone amp built-in with the connection on the front.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you wish to reset the BlueTooth connection there is a quick button for that on the remote as well. The remote also has some basic transport control functions when you are in BlueTooth mode.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe did have one gripe about the remote. Since the TUK has so many inputs, it would have been nice to have direct access to them. The remote just has a single input button that toggles through them. There is a tiny display on the front of the TUK to indicate the input, but we would have preferred direct access.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIf you can’t find the remote, the TUK has basic functions of on\/off, volume and input selection built into the small knob on the front panel.\u003c\/strong\u003e We have to say, the feature set and tech inside the TUK is very impressive. We also had a Kanto Sub8 which is their 8” powered subwoofer to use for testing out how well they paired with a sub using their special DSP. \u003cstrong\u003eThe first thing we did, and we’ve learned this in the past from other small powered speakers, was to plug in a CD player, put it on repeat and let it run the TUK’s pretty hard for a couple of days to break in the drivers.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe put them in a room that was a bit lively to try and recreate what might be a typical room they would be in and having the treble and bass controls were very handy as we backed down the treble 1 click and everything sounded very natural. We had just a shade too much high-frequency energy due to the room before we backed it down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter a few tracks, we were grinning ear to ear. \u003cstrong\u003eThe TUK is just flat out fun to listen to. They are extremely dynamic which pulls you into the music. Percussion and any other instruments with a lot of dynamics jumped out into the room.\u003c\/strong\u003e This was especially noticeable in the first 2 minutes of Dave Matthews “Grave Digger” live at Citi Field. The intro drum solo was very impressive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe switched to an old rock classic, “Pink Houses” from John Mellencamp and had the exact same experience with anything dynamic. “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck showed us how well the TUK imaged. \u003cstrong\u003eThe soundstage was very wide. Vocals on “Call Me” by Hans Theessink were also very impressive. Even deeper kickdrum sounds were handled quite easily by this tiny little speaker. They reach down quite deep for their size.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChanging over to some light jazz, again, we wanted to go from explosive dynamics to see how well they revealed the subtle details of the music. Again, the TUK was very impressive letting us hear harmonics of a clarinet and brush strokes on a cymbal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext, we put on an old Hendrix cut, “Purple Haze” and cranked them up. They were able to play very loud and totally fill up the roughly 22’ by 16’ room we were in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOverall, by themselves, with no sub, the TUK is a real winner!\u003c\/strong\u003e Of course, we had to try out adding a sub. Holding down the Sub mute button for about 8 seconds kicks in the crossover. We adjusted the output of the Kanto Sub8 to match well and played most of the same tracks over again. While it was not a complete transformation three things really stood out. Bass, of course, went deeper with the sub. However, the midrange opened up quite a bit on most passages. With the sub engaged they could also play several dB louder before sounding strained. If you decide to add a sub to the TUK’s, be sure and play around with its position and spend some time tuning in the sub level, it will be well worth it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKanto has done a fantastic job of creating one of the most dynamic and engaging small powered speakers we have heard in a long time. Although they are not inexpensive for powered speakers, they deliver sound far above their price point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eOverall Recommendation\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are considering putting together a compact system that has the ability to start to play in the big leagues of audio, you should put the TUK on your list. Klipsch has stood by these principals in every product they produce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subject of today’s review is the new Klipsch Cornwall, now in its 4th edition. The Cornwall has a pretty interesting history. Back in 1957, Paul Klipsch wanted a speaker to provide a center fill channel for use in large rooms where the Klipschorns were widely spaced apart. The design he liked did not have a horn-loaded woofer like the larger Klipschorn. His friends told him it would be heresy to produce a speaker like this, but Paul told them that is exactly what he was going to do and he was going to call it the Heresy. The design idea was so popular, customers started demanding a bigger version of the Heresy, and in 1959, the Cornwall was born. Every couple of decades enough new technology has come out in driver and cabinet design that Klipsch will update their classic Heritage series products. The Cornwall IV has all of the latest thinking on Paul’s four guiding principles the engineering team at Klipsch could develop out of the technology available today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eDesign \u0026amp; Build Quality\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Klipsch Cornwall IV is pretty similar in outward appearance to the Cornwall III. It is a fairly large floor-standing speaker design. \u003cstrong\u003eYou’ll find a horn tweeter, horn midrange, and front-firing 15” woofer in the new Cornwall IV.\u003c\/strong\u003e The woofer is also ported on the front of the cabinet. As with all Klipsch speakers, their four pillars of speaker design we described in the section above are part of the DNA inside the new Cornwall IV.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you pull the grill off the Cornwall IV, you’ll see some of the updates Klipsch incorporated into this new model. It’s not a subtle change with a brand new midrange driver and horn, new tweeter lens, new crossover, new porting system, and some subtle cosmetic updates.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Cornwall IV, like the LaScala and Heresy, can be placed in corners, against a back wall away from corners, or slightly out from the wall, toed in just a bit.\u003c\/strong\u003e Each position, like all speakers, will affect the sound and we recommend if you have some flexibility to play around to find what works best in your room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing part of the Klipsch Heritage series, the Cornwall IV is handmade to order at the Klipsch factory in Hope Arkansas. \u003cstrong\u003eAll Heritage \u003c\/strong\u003eseries\u003cstrong\u003e products use only the finest book-matched wood veneers which are arranged to give you a mirror image look where they are spliced together.\u003c\/strong\u003e Every pair of Heritage speakers starts out with grain matched panels, cut from the same block of wood. They travel together throughout the assembly process to assure you of two natural wood veneer speakers that have an almost identical appearance. Obviously when you put this level of detail into the cabinets alone, build quality on the Cornwall IV is just spectacular. It was a lot of fun switching back and forth between the two models, discovering why the Forte III commands a higher price. One of the things that really stood out in the Forte III was the openness of the midrange over the Heresy III and how well the Forte III threw out a huge soundstage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we got pulled off the grills on the Cornwall IV before listening, we were grinning, as \u003cstrong\u003ewe could see Klipsch took the type of driver used for the midrange in the Forte III and improved upon it even further!\u003c\/strong\u003e The Cornwall III had a pretty similar type of midrange horn as the Heresy and we thought the Forte III was actually better in the critical midrange area than the Cornwall III.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe contacted Klipsch to get a good understanding of all the updates and it turns out, \u003cstrong\u003evirtually everything about the Cornwall has been updated in the IV version except for the 15” woofer. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with the horn tweeter, the compression driver is the same as the previous model, but they have updated the phase plug which gives the tweeter a wider coverage pattern in the higher frequencies. The midrange compression driver is a brand new K-702 model coupled with a new Tractrix horn. This new combination produces a much wider soundstage with a bigger sweet spot. Klipsch says the clarity, dynamics, and detail is also much better on the new Cornwall IV. Not only do you get more detail, but the sound is even smoother and sweeter with the new Tractrix design and K-702. Both of these updates should contribute to a speaker that can give you a more three-dimensional soundstage while maintaining the power and impact of great horn design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch also has applied its Tractrix technology to the front-firing ports for the 15” woofer.\u003c\/strong\u003e These improve the speed and tightness of the low end. The three front-firing ports were pretty impressive looking on the Cornwall III, but when you see the Cornwall IV, it takes on this look of serious business!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe crossover (which is the electrical component inside a speaker that routes the correct frequencies to each driver) has been totally updated using audiophile-grade components. \u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch used the voicing from the Klipschorn and La Scala and changed the crossover slopes to match with the new K-702 and Tractrix horn.\u003c\/strong\u003e According to Klipsch, they were able to use steeper slopes than on the Cornwall III. The wiring between the speaker connections, crossover, and the drivers is also a higher performance wire than in the previous model. Finally, the dual binding posts on the rear have been updated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCosmetically there are some updates as well. On the Cornwall III, the small riser was always the same color as the wood veneer. Klipsch has moved to a matte black finish on all the risers, which on the wood finishes gives the speaker a look like it is floating. The front bezel is thinner (x to x) and they have given the grill some subtle cosmetic improvements too. Instead of the classic horn logo in the corner, the Cornwall IV now has a scripted “Cornwall” in the top center of the grill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are unfamiliar with Klipsch speakers, horn speakers have an allure that captures the ears of many music lovers. They are typically very easy to push, only needing a great, low power amplifier to get them to concert levels. \u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch speakers have this “you are there” feel with power and impact you just do not get with conventional speakers until you spend more than a nice car.\u003c\/strong\u003e One complaint some people have had over the years is the horns sounded a bit harsh to their ears, but as drivers and the actual horn itself has improved, any trace of harshness has disappeared. If you have not heard a Klipsch Heritage series speaker in years, you might want to give them a listen, the emotional quality of the music they can convey to you is something pretty special.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you read our review comparing the Klipsch Forte III to the Heresy III, you probably understood we really loved the Forte III. After spending about an hour listening to the Cornwall IV, we have to say, they sound like a Forte III on steroids. In other words, very impressive!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe connected them up to a low power integrated amp and proceeded to play some of our favorite comparison tracks. \u003cstrong\u003eThe first thing that jumps out at you (literally) is how dynamic they are. On Dave Matthews Grave Digger the drums just exploded into the room.\u003c\/strong\u003e His voice was dead center and just the right size, but it felt like a band was in front of us with all the dynamics and power we were feeling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe switched over to Enya Caribbean Blue which has some of the typical Enya haunting sounds with big basslines coming in. All of the percussion and guitars in the middle of the song when things are moving from left to right had sounded very big on the Forte III and much smaller on the Heresy. We had suspected it was due to the new Tractrix horn and this was confirmed with the Cornwall IV.
