To start, we put them on the SP32 speaker stands and plugged them into our TV to watch some movies. We started out with Encanto because we thought all the music would really put these speakers to the test. We were blown away by the way these speakers painted the voices in the songs across the whole room. This made the movie a much more fun experience being able to clearly hear the different voices coming in and singing in different scenes. If you're looking for an upgrade to your TV's audio, you seriously have to consider these speakers over a soundbar. They sound amazing and have so many more use cases than soundbars at this price point. While on stands, they provide a look that stands out compared to a soundbar below a TV. A really cool option with these would be to add a turntable under your TV and have them both connected at the same time. Working while playing Qobuz in the background was a pleasure. The song “Happier Than Ever” is a fun tune by Billie Eilish that really puts these speakers to work. You could hear the subtle breathiness of Billie's voice between words along with the background vocals and instruments perfectly separated during the whole first half of the song. During the second half, Billie takes it up a notch and the whole band kicks in with some solid bass and instrumentation. As I turned them up, the low end really shined with each hit of the bass being felt in my chest. This is their national research center where there is a huge amount of audio test gear available for Canadian companies to use in designing speakers. The Mirage speakers came out of the NRC. Today, Mark Glazer, who joined Harman in 1989, is the Principal Engineer for Revel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRevel has several model series, and today’s review focuses on a new model in the Performa Be or beryllium series, the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/revel-performabe-f226be-3-way-floorstanding-loudspeaker-each.html\"\u003eF226Be\u003c\/a\u003e. This is a modest-sized floor-standing speaker we previewed at our recent Music Matters. Everyone who listened to it was very impressed by its performance, so we decided to put it through its paces! Not only does this give it a more elegant appearance, but \u003cstrong\u003ea curved cabinet is very rigid and reduces internal vibrations.\u003c\/strong\u003e You’ll have a choice of four color options on the F226Be with gloss black or white, walnut, and a stunning automotive type silver finish. We previewed the silver version at Music Matters and everyone loved the finish. It almost makes the speaker disappear into the room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Revel F226Be tower speaker is a little over 41” tall, about 10” wide, and 13” deep at the very deepest point. You can tell \u003cstrong\u003eRevel took some of the F206 in the Performa series as a starting point but upgraded the cabinet, speaker drivers, and crossover, for a completely new speaker.\u003c\/strong\u003e It may look similar, but wow, are the audio differences big!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike many Revel speakers, \u003cstrong\u003ethe F226Be is a three-way design with dual woofers.\u003c\/strong\u003e The magnetic grill hides the drivers and the front-firing port.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBuild quality on Revel speakers is fantastic.\u003c\/strong\u003e With their big investment in automated tooling, they can turn out beautiful cabinets where everything fits perfectly. The dual banana plugs on the back are rock solid. The base of the speaker has threaded plugs for some well-made spikes. Revel even gives you the option of a pointed spike for carpet or a rounded one for hard surfaces, a nice touch we don’t see very often. The F226Be uses some pretty cool driver technology which we cover next.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eFeatures \u0026amp; Technology\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRevel is like a few of our other favorite companies who make some “no holds barred” gear which lets them learn, then filter down those learnings into more affordable products. \u003cstrong\u003eThe \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/revel-salon2-floorstanding-speaker.html\"\u003eRevel Salon 2\u003c\/a\u003e is one heck of an amazing speaker, but at 146 pounds each, almost 5 feet tall and $22,000 a pair, not everyone can afford them. But, what they learned in making the Salon 2 has been showing up in their more affordable speakers like the F226Be.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRevel developed the beryllium tweeter for the Ultima series and carries it over to the PerformaBe models.\u003c\/strong\u003e Beryllium is a rare earth metal that is a perfect fit for a high-frequency driver. When you compare it to aluminum or titanium, it is 4 to 5 times stiffer with 3 times better damping, and at about half the weight! You might think a metal dome tweeter would have a harsh sound, as many have displayed this character over the decades. \u003cstrong\u003eThe Revel beryllium tweeter is not only super fast and open but smooth as silk with never a trace of harshness.\u003c\/strong\u003e Part of this is due to the design of the tweeter itself, but Revel has also spent a lot in R\u0026amp;D on the waveguide, which also has a lot to do with its great performance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg alt=\"Revel F226Be Tweeter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/wordpress2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/F226Be_tweeter.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the Ultima series, Revel uses titanium for the midrange and woofers. This very expensive material was too much for a lower cost speaker so Revel started experimenting with different cone materials to come up with something that offered close to the level of performance measurements they had with the drivers in the Ultima. What they came up with is pretty cool.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey start out with a light weight aluminum cone. They then use a plasma discharge to coat both sides of the cone with a coarse ceramic coating. The result of this is a three layer material which provides constrained layer damping. We’ve seen turntable manufacturers use the constrained layer damping technique in both tonearms and plinths. When you join two different materials that are of different thicknesses, the result is a material that has very little resonance or breakup. Revel only pushed this far as they knew what could be done from the Ultima.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRevel developed a 5 ¼” midrange driver and a 6 ½” bass driver for the F226Be. They use two of the bass drivers which gives us bass that is very tight and deep and fast as lightning.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of these great drivers would go to waste with a badly designed crossover and cabinet. \u003cstrong\u003eRevel uses very high end film capacitors and air core inductors in their crossover. We really did not spend much time with them at our event, but \u003cstrong\u003eafter a few cuts, it was very clear to us the F226Be is a giant killer!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you get a pair of these, you will want to spend some time precisely setting them up. \u003cstrong\u003eJust like with all tower speakers, you’ll want to find the spot off the wall where they open up, but just as importantly, you really need to make sure you get them positioned exactly the same in terms of distance off the back wall.\u003c\/strong\u003e They throw out such an amazing image, if you get them properly positioned, you’ll have pinpoint imaging that is very deep and extends way outside the speakers. At first we did not have them perfect and had a little bit of smearing of the image, but after we got them dialed in, WOW! On the 90125 Yes Album, the A Capella version of Leave It, was just spectacular in the way all those overdubbed voices fall into a precise point in front of you both inside and outside the speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFor those of you new to high performance speakers, one very enjoyable feature of some great speakers is how you can sense the performers in front of you.\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eFor this to happen at its best, your ears need to be the same distance from each speaker. In other words, you need to be dead center between them\u003c\/strong\u003e. It usually works best if you are the same distance from them that they are apart or a little more or less in each direction. You can sense a bit of it if you are not centered, but the magic happens when you listen this way. It’s also better if your chair does not extend up behind your ears too. When we refer to imaging and sound being in front of us, we are talking about listening in this type of position.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are several aspects about these speakers that got us really excited. \u003cstrong\u003eThe deep bass you get from the two 6 ½” drivers is just astounding!\u003c\/strong\u003e We played some cuts we use for electric bass resolution and they sounded just fantastic. The scary part though is how they allow you to pinpoint the exact position of the pluck of the bass string. A lot of speakers can throw out deep bass, but they are not able to provide the resolution for your ears to locate the exact position of the bass instrument in the soundstage. When we first played Dialog Part 1 from Chicago’s 5th album it was super detailed. The F226Be’s continued to do this on every cut we tried. We are pretty sure this is due to the narrow cabinet face coupled with their great driver technology and very inert cabinet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRevel speakers have always been very neutral with no trace of hardness and that trend continues with the F226Be.\u003c\/strong\u003e The brush of a cymbal will sound like it's floating right there in front of you, but when you have lots of complicated things going on in the music, they never ever get the least bit strained in the top end. This was especially apparent on a Mozart selection we played from a pretty cool group we discovered while lost in Roon, the Trondheim Soloists. The strings were very extended yet extremely detailed with no harshness at all, something that is pretty hard to do. That beryllium tweeter is just super sweet and detailed!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn area where the $22K Revel Salon’s excel is midrange resolution. They allow you to hear all of the emotions in a performer's voice, the emphasis they might be putting into bending a guitar string, or the tiny volume changes in a sax solo that make you feel like you are hearing it live. Even a cut from the 1971 Joni Mitchell album Blue, really drew us into the music. If you have never heard River, pull it in on Tidal or your favorite streaming service and relax. In the typical clever way Sonos thinks about things when you mount it to the bracket, the Arc uses magnets to sense its been wall-mounted and makes electronic adjustments to the sound to adjust for the way being directly mounted to a wall affects its acoustics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDimensionally, the Sonos Arc is designed to match up best with TV’s 55” and up in width with a total width of right at 45”. It should be able to sit pretty well under most of today’s TVs as it's less than 3 ½” tall and only about 4 ½” deep.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe connectors on the Sonos Arc are all recessed nicely, but there are not that many due to its simple setup. You’ll find an HDMI connection, an ethernet port, and a power connection. If your TV is older, before HDMI-ARC hit the market, you don’t need to worry. If your TV supports HDMI-ARC, all you have to do is make the connection and the Arc knows to work with your TV. If your TV is older, without an HDMI-ARC connection, the Sonos app will walk you through a few quick steps to have the Arc learn the commands of your TV remote, so either way, the operation is a piece of cake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNewer TV’s these days have a new type of HDMI port, that uses HDMI eARC. This is a new technology that allows Dolby Atmos to be transmitted out to compatible devices and the new Arc fits the bill perfectly for this.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother great feature of all Sonos products is they operate within the same ecosystem and app. You can easily group rooms to fill your house with the same music or separate them for different listening tastes. And if you happen to be using the Arc for music and decide to watch TV, it will automatically switch to TV sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYes, the new Arc has some awesome features, but what really impresses us is all the tech inside to deliver outstanding Dolby Atmos surround sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSonos spent many years developing the acoustics for the Arc. There are 11 speaker drivers to provide room-filling sound. The five-channel phased array using new custom elliptical woofers provides the left, center, right, and surround channels. Two height channel speakers fire the sound upward for the immersive Atmos experience. But it gets better. You can add a Sonos Sub for extended bass or a pair of Sonos One SL for rears and the Arc adjusts itself. If you add the rears, the surround channel drivers change to additional bass drivers for the main left and right channels, super cool!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe team at Sonos decided to take things to the extreme in designing the sound profile of the Arc. They actually hired some Oscar-winning sound engineers to help fine-tune the Arc to enable you to hear every little sound easily and clearly. They also wanted to make 100% sure it delivered the dialog track incredibly well. We think it’s safe to say when you have someone who produces movie sound deciding if a speaker sounds like they expect, you’ll get a great product.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf that were not enough, Sonos added a dialog enhancement feature that brings up the level of the dialog track to make it even easier to understand what the performers are saying on screen. There is even a night sound mode that will reduce the levels of big explosions for those times you want to watch a movie and not wake up the kids or neighbors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA Sonos feature that came out a few years ago is something called TruePlay. This feature is by no means unique to the Arc, but we think it's important to talk about it, as it is a huge advantage. If you ask any sound engineer what affects the sound more than anything else, they will say the room. You can put a speaker in one room, then move it to another, and would never believe they are even the same speaker, it can be that big.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSonos TruePlay is a very easy-to-use system that will fine-tune the Sonos speaker to the room. All you have to do is walk around the room with your smartphone and in about 3-4 minutes you will have done something that was not even remotely possible just 10 years ago. TruePlay assures you that the Arc will sound as good as it possibly can even in a room with some acoustic challenges. Sonos was nice enough to send along a set of suggested Netflix Dolby Atmos demo clips which we used along with a few of our own favorites. If you are just discovering Dolby Atmos and are a Netflix fan, Netflix has a great search engine to help you discover all of this great new content. Simply search for “atmos” and you’ll see a whole pile of movies that are done in this awesome new surround sound format.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSetup, even in the testing beta Sonos app, was super simple as is always so true for Sonos gear. We connected the HDMI-ARC input to the HDMI-eARC connector on the rear of a new Sony TV, plugged in power, and in a couple of minutes were up and running. We like the fact during the Sonos Arc setup, you go ahead and run TruePlay (their room correction software) first, as in some rooms, it can make a tremendous difference. The room we tested it in was a pretty typical family-type room about 12’ wide by 16’ deep with a 9-foot ceiling and a decent amount of furniture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe tried the Arc first by itself, then we added a pair of PLAY:5’s we use for demos as the surrounds, and finally added the Sonos Sub.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the first things we tried out was a scene from \u003ci\u003eThe Irishman\u003c\/i\u003e on Netflix. About 5 minutes into the movie, there is a scene with 2 couples in a car driving. With the Arc, you could clearly tell the sound felt like you were inside an old car, then the scene switches to everyone standing outside at a roadside stop near some woods. The Arc did an amazing job of portraying all of the insects they mixed into the audio track. You could hear buzzing and chirping all around you and felt like you were outside with the characters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd speaking of buzzing and chirping, if you pull up the series \u003ci\u003eNight on Earth\u003c\/i\u003e and cue up the episode “Jungle Nights”, at about 3:30 you will be completely surrounded by jungle sounds with the Arc. The job it does on recreating a great Dolby Atmos soundstage is really amazing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, we used one of the Sonos recommended scenes from Season 3, Episode 1 of \u003ci\u003eStranger Things\u003c\/i\u003e. If you start at the beginning the scene builds to completely filling the room with whirring then finally a big explosion that really comes across well if you have the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/sonos-sub-gen-3.html\"\u003eSonos Sub\u003c\/a\u003e in the mix.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn our testing, we found the Arc is so good at throwing out a 3 dimensional Atmos soundstage, adding a pair of rear speakers was only marginally better. We suspect if you had a more open, non-rectangular room, they would benefit you more, but you will be far better off taking the money a pair of rears would cost and putting that towards adding a Sonos Sub. While the Arc has ok bass, its small size does limit the deep bass it can put out, so for a much more immersive home theater experience, we highly recommend adding the Sonos Sub.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you go the route of adding a Sub and\/or a pair of rear speakers, the Sonos app gives you so much more control over their soundbar-based surround system than any other soundbar we know of. Not only do you get TruePlay, which in its first pass at your listening spot measures all the distances, but you can also dive into the app and adjust levels individually for each of the surrounds and the subwoofer. You even get a lip-sync adjustment just like you see in better home theater receivers. If you do have the room and budget for a system using good separate components (especially if the home theater receiver has room eq), you will get an even better experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor our ears, there does not seem to be a point of diminishing returns on home theater until you get way up into multi-thousand dollar systems, so don’t let our excitement over the Arc make you think you don’t need separates if you have the space and budget for them. If you do not have a good way to position them, Kanto speaker stands will help the imaging by raising them up high enough to remove the potential of furniture or other boundaries from interfering with the sound quality. The YU Passive 5.25” presented a wide soundstage with more separation in the stereo image — however, some of that great “in-your-face” mid-range that really glued the dynamics in the song together opened up a little bit more and the music sounded just a little bit closer to the experience of a live concert. In particular, we could feel more of the rhythm and pacing coming from the electric bass guitar on this song and the bottom-end weight, overall, just came a little bit more alive on the YU Passive 5.25”.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext, since the Cambridge Audio AXA35 Integrated Amplifier has a good moving magnet phono preamp built-in, we tested the YU Passives in our open room setting with a vinyl record player using the RCA connections on the back of the amplifier. The original version of the 600M has a horn waveguide that is 5.75 inches versus the new 600M II, which is 6.75 inches and extends almost to the edge of the baffle on the sides and top which will help with diffraction. We’ll discuss more about why this update is so important a little later.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThey come in two standard finishes, walnut or ebony,\u003c\/strong\u003e and boast satin-painted baffles with a new scratch-resistant finish so they should be pretty immune from getting dinged up if you move them around. We also like that they come with magnetic grills, which is a nice touch in this price range. It’s clear the aesthetic design team spent some time making sure the RP-600M II looked impressive when you popped off the grill. They accented the Tractrix horn with copper to match the cool-looking copper finish of the special cerametallic woofers. When you look at the two series side by side, the RPII’s seem to have a much cleaner and higher-end look on the back. They’ve upgraded the rear input panel with higher quality jumpers and anodized bolts to lock in the speaker wires. The housing and magnet structure use venting technology to reduce any standing waves behind the tweeter which create unwanted harmonics, which in turn, gives you more clarity and enhanced details. The Titanium diaphragm is housed in a way that forces it to have a pistonic motion, which Klipsch first started using in their more expensive speakers. They call this Linear Travel Suspension.\nUpdates to the tweeter include a new phase plug and the big obvious one is the new lens that in the 600M II covers the entire face of the cabinet. The venting technology also allowed them to remove the ferrofluid which was used to cool tweeters, for an even more effortless sound. To our ears, this new design is far sweeter than the previous model. People who have thought inexpensive horn-type speakers were a little edgy will have that opinion totally changed when they hear these.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eThe 6 ½” Cerametallic™ woofers used in the RP-600M II have been updated for flawless sound reproduction, minimum distortion, and maximum efficiency with larger diameter voice coils and aluminum shorting rings. Their Cerametallic material uses multiple layers of metal on the cone which not only makes it very stiff to avoid breakup, the combination of materials pushes the natural breakup point of the driver far beyond the frequency range it operates in. The only thing that remains the same over the new model is the cone material itself, the entire motor structure of the woofer has been redone. When Klipsch designed The Fives, their incredible powered speaker, they developed some new woofer technology that was used in the new Reference Premiere models. When you spin the speaker around to look at the rear, you’ll see the patented Tractrix port Klipsch continues to develop and improve upon. With each speaker model, they design the port to reduce turbulence and to perfectly match the cabinet’s acoustic characteristics. The new Reference Premiere models all got improved internal bracing as well. This now runs both horizontally and vertically for an even more rigid cabinet which results in even less coloration than before.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eThe binding posts are updated as well with better connectors and instead of metal jumpers move up to high-quality speaker cable jumpers like we see in much more expensive speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eLive music has huge swings in volume level between the loudest peaks and the softest passages. When a symphony orchestra or your favorite band swells to a full crescendo, the feeling of power you sense is what makes live music so much fun. It takes a highly efficient speaker to be able to reproduce those wide swings in volume and be able to portray that big crescendo like you are really there. \u003cstrong\u003eThe RP-600M II’s are rated at 94.5db efficiency which is super high but a touch lower than the 96db that is reported on the original 600M’s. We put them on some heavy-duty Sound Anchor stands and wired everything up with Transparent cables. The room was about 14 by 19 with 10 ft ceilings and we had them about 10 feet apart on the long wall and about 2 feet off the rear wall. This is the same setup we used when reviewing the first 600M. When you set these up, you will want to make sure they are equal distance from the back wall and from your listening position.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWe played a Dave Matthews “Grave Digger”, which has a decent amount of deep bass and the first thing we did was make sure the sub that was sitting in the room was not connected.\u003c\/strong\u003e They were producing a staggering amount of deep bass for a speaker their size just like the originals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003e\u003ciframe src=\"https:\/\/widget.qobuz.com\/track\/46955987?lang=en\u0026amp;zone=us-en\" width=\"300\" height=\"90\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWe switched over to something simple with Adele’s “Hello”. When the track first started, the piano filled the soundstage from left to right with great harmonic definition. \u003cstrong\u003eWhen Adele comes in, you can tell how the efficiency of the speaker lets you hear all of the little subtle emotions in her voice as you can easily hear all the tiny changes in volume level that other less efficient speakers might mask a bit.\u003c\/strong\u003e Interestingly, her voice floated almost a foot above the top of the speakers making for a very nice presentation. The soundstage felt just a bit wider than with the original 600M most likely due to the wider wavehorn guide which we really enjoyed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ciframe src=\"https:\/\/widget.qobuz.com\/track\/108818871?lang=en\u0026amp;zone=us-en\" width=\"300\" height=\"90\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTo really give the imaging a test, we put on the acapella version of “Leave It from Yes”. If you’ve heard this cut it is full of overdubbed voices that jump out all across the soundstage from left to right. \u003cstrong\u003eThis track sounded big, rich, and full, once again very impressive. The RPII seemed to perform with just a touch more liveliness and a larger soundstage to us.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAfter this, we felt we should probably test them out on something more modest like they might be typically used on, so we moved them to an entry-level \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/cambridge\"\u003eCambridge Audio stack\u003c\/a\u003e with some basic speaker stands and cables. \u003cstrong\u003eOn this setup, once again they had us scratching our heads at how well they did on the same cuts, however, we’ve learned something over the years in playing around with gear. A really good speaker will show you the improvements as you make the front end better.\u003c\/strong\u003e This was certainly the case with the Klipsch RP-600M II as you could easily hear that they sounded better on the higher performance McIntosh stack just like the original 600M did as well. But, just like the original, the new 600M II is just incredible for the money in how well it pulls you into the music and makes you forget about your system and enjoy your favorite musicians.   While they will sound pretty good if you just plop them down, it's worth it to spend a little time setting them up to get the most out of them. To our ears, we found the new 600M II to be much sweeter sounding, have a bit deeper bass, and have an even purer midrange than the older model. There are other speakers in this price range that can keep up or maybe surpass it in terms of transparency, but we have not heard anything at the same size and price that can reproduce deep bass like they do and give you that emotional impact of a live performance.
