When it came to producing quality sound, most people back then thought only about the speakers and not as much about the turntable itself. Roy understood what any true audio enthusiast understands -- that every aspect affects the sound, from the source to the speakers.

By 1973, Roy was building turntables at home in his spare time. In 1975 he produced the Planar 2, followed in 1977 by the Planar 3. This is a complete overhaul of the Rega RP1 which came before it. Due to its great quality build and sound, as well as it’s sub $500 price, the Planar 1 has quickly become one of the most popular entry-level turntables in the world.

Design & Build Quality

The Planar 1 (which we will refer to interchangeably as the P1 as well throughout this review) is a manual, belt-drive turntable, like many of the best high-performance turntables in the world.

There are several reasons why these types of turntables are so popular.

When it comes to the way the platter is spun, there are three different types of turntables -- idler wheel, direct-drive, and belt-drive. The very first turntables were idler wheel. With this type of a table, a motor with a rubber outer ring contacts the inside of the turntable platter, using friction to spin the platter. This is a very noisy type of design that is not really found much these days, for obvious reasons.

Direct drive is popular due to the fact it starts up instantly and is safe for spinning the platter backwards for DJ type use. However, with direct-drive the platter becomes part of the motor and can pick up motor noise. Direct drive is also constantly correcting the speed, so it’s less pure.

Belt drive gives you the advantage of isolating the platter from the motor as little to no noise passes through the belt. Once the platter gets up to speed, the speed is usually very consistent.

For over 40 years, Rega has opted for belt-drive designs, and the P1 (even at a great beginner price) is no exception. In addition, the motor is suspended on an isolation system that reduces noise even further.

The Planar 1 is also a manual turntable. Rega likes to use a lightweight plinth to help any external noise filter out through the turntables feet. In the case of the P1, the plinth is a sandwich melamine construction wrapped in a high pressure acrylic laminate. This type of design also cancels noise out by having different thicknesses of materials.

The platter is the large circular disk that the vinyl record sits on. The P1’s platter is made of a heavy phenolic material. It is thicker and heavier around the outer edge, giving it a better flywheel effect, which leads to more consistent speeds. All of the Rega turntables above the Planar 1 use an even heavier glass platter, but this is a great way to get most of the benefits while still keeping the cost of the P1 reasonable.

While many other turntable brands out there just use other manufacturers tonearms, Rega makes their own. Their arms have been winning awards for years. The Rega P1 uses the new RB110 tonearm. It’s specifically designed to work with the Rega Carbon moving magnet phono cartridge, which comes pre-mounted on the P1. It doesn’t offer as many adjustments as some of Rega’s other arms do, but for the money, it’s a great tonearm.

When it comes to the bearings, it’s important that they be tight but provide as little friction as possible. Many turntables we test fail when we get to this part of the evaluation. It’s pretty easy to test by carefully grasping the tonearm at the front and moving it front to back to see if there is any play in the bearing. We call that bearing chatter.

From there, zero balance the arm and see if it moves freely from side to side. You’ll want to be careful of your stylus when you do this, as they’re very delicate and can break or bend easily. Needless to say, the RB110 on the Planar 1 passes the test with flying colors.

The main bearing, which the platter sits on, is another extremely important part of any turntable. If the bearing creates any kind of noise at all, it can be transmitted up the platter and eventually to the stylus. You may have heard this in some less expensive turntables in the form of a background rumble.

The P1 has a bearing that is very similar to the one use in their more expensive Planar 2. The hub that the outer platter sits on is made of a phenolic material with a stainless steel spindle that drops down into a bronze bearing well. You’ll notice that when you first install the inner hub, it will fit in perfectly. Place the outer platter on, give it a spin, and we bet you won’t hear the slightest hint of noise.

All Rega tables also use 24-volt brushless motors that are isolated from the plinth. They’ve perfected this design over the years to the point where the motor provides a solid speed to the pulley.

In 2018 Rega added a new model to the series, a Planar 1 Plus. The Plus is identical to the Planar 1, with the addition of a built in phono preamp. The phono preamp is designed to work great with the Rega Carbon cartridge supplied with the Planar 1. This allows the Planar 1 Plus to be easily connected to a pair of powered speakers or a system lacking a phono preamp. The only thing to consider is the built in phono preamp is always on. Should you ever want to purchase a better phono preamp, it would not work with the Planar 1 Plus.

As you can see, at least in the theory, the tech is all there! We’ll start at the bottom and go up from there in order to touch on all the great features found in the Planar 6.

Rega, as always, paid a lot of attention to their turntable feet and came up with an improved design for the Planar 6. The feet are made of a new, ultra-lightweight rubber material called Santoprene. They are hollow cones with aluminum reinforcement trim rings. The feet are a crucial component of the table as they are designed to filter out any external energy through them.

The feet are attached to the new plinth, constructed from a new, ultra-lightweight Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core that is sandwiched between two layers of ultra-thin high-pressure laminate. Tancast 8 was developed for the aerospace industry and it turns out is a great material for the type of design Rega deploys in their tables.

According to the engineers from Rega that we spoke with, this new plinth is a true breakthrough in material technology and offers big performance improvements over their previous designs.

The main bearing is Rega’s classic brass bearing, but with the Planar 6 they step up to a single-piece machined aluminum hub. The hub is the small round part that goes down into the bearing. The larger outer platter sits on top of the hub. The outer platter only touches the hub in a few spots along its outer edge where there are tiny raised pieces on the top of the hub.

The Planar 6 has a dual layer float glass platter. It has more glass around about the middle 50% and out for a better flywheel effect to keep speed consistent. As you might suspect, float glass is super flat, which also helps keep things spinning at a perfect pitch.

To drive the hub, Rega includes their new white Reference belt with the Planar 6. This is machined to a higher tolerance than their standard belt. They also developed a new custom spindle for the motor side of the belt that is tapered to reduce friction.

The motor itself is a low-noise 24-volt design. Each motor is individually tuned to the external Neo power supply that comes with the Planar 6. The Neo PSU uses a DSP-based sinewave generator and a high-precision crystal clock oscillator to generate a super-consistent speed. The speed can be fine-tuned with a little screw on the back side of the Neo PSU. The AC power cable attaches to the Neo PSU and it connects to the Planar 6 with a custom cable. Having an external motor power supply is a great way to reduce any noise from a power supply that your phono cartridge might otherwise pick up. This is not unique to Rega as many high-performance turntables use this method.

Like Rega’s other high-performance tables, the Planar 6 has an aluminum brace that locks the tonearm base to the main bearing. The tonearm used on the Planar 6 is their relatively new RB330 which was introduced with the new Planar 3. The RB330 is an engineering feat in and of itself with its zero tolerance bearings. We loved it on the Planar 3 and think it is a great match for the Planar 6 as well.

As we mentioned earlier, the Planar 6 is available without a cartridge or you can purchase one of the packages that include either the Exact or Ania. The tonearm cables are non-detachable but are very high-quality with great materials and solid connections.

Finally, the Rega Planar 6 includes a dust cover that appears to have a slight grey tin, rather than the clear covers that come with the Rega Planar 1, 2, and 3.

Performance

Before we get into this, let us just say that we may have gone a little overboard on our setup rig to listen to the new Planar 6.

Like many of the audio startups of the time, Rega began in his garage, which turned out to be very close to their current factory in the UK. For 45 years, Rega has been all about producing very high value products that can also stand the test of time. It seems like almost once a month we see a very old Rega coming into our shop for an update to a new cartridge. Based upon that information, you might think that we are moving from an RP8 to a P8 and the same thing is happening. However, in this case, the new Planar 8 is actually based on Rega’s 40th anniversary no holds barred Naiad that sells for 45,000 US. Their engineers wanted to make a much more affordable version of the Naiad. It is a skeletal structure made out of a material that came from the aerospace industry, Tancast 8. The P6 was the first table from Rega to use this great new material. Tancast 8 is a polyurethane foam core sandwiched between two layers of black high pressure laminate. The engineers at Rega we have spoken to feel Tancast 8 is a breakthrough material for turntables. We expect we will see it in all of Rega’s new designs in the higher end price ranges. On the Planar 6, the edges of the foam core are covered in laminate, but to reduce mass even more, Rega leaves the edges naked in the Planar 8. The subplatter which supports the main platter is machined from a single piece of aluminum. This is attached to a hardened steel spindle which sits inside a custom brass housing using a new design that filtered down from the Naiad. This new mounting design keeps energy from transferring down to the plinth. Rega also incorporated a similar hub and subplatter system in the new Planar 6.

Moving on to the platter, we find Rega’s classic glass platter design. The platter is super critical in keeping things spinning at a constant speed. One way to have good speed consistency is to use a very heavy platter, and as we all know, once something heavy gets moving, it tends to keep moving. However, a heavy platter can put more strain than is needed on the turntable bearing, so Rega uses a method to have the best of both worlds. The Planar 8 has a triple glass platter with most of the thickness on the perimeter of the platter. This gives a great flywheel effect for excellent speed stability, but keeps things lighter than if the whole platter was this thickness, very clever! The RP8 also used a triple glass platter as well.

With the Naiad, Rega learned that isolating the motor to the nth degree can have a big impact on performance.. This new motor mounting principal is another design that derived from the Naiad. Unlike most other Rega tables, the Planar 8 motor is mounted from the bottom using a new coupling technique. The bottom mount reduces stress on the motor and prevents unwanted energy transferring into the plinth. You’ll also notice the motor pulley has two precision slots for the dual belt system. Like the Planar 6, the Planar 8 comes with the Neo outboard speed control box. However, with the P8, each motor is hand tuned to the Neo that comes with it for even better speed stability.

The engineering team at Rega has been doing some homework with chemists over the last three years to try and come up with a better material for turntable belts. This new type of belt is called the EBLT drive belt. Rega and the chemists came up with a special curing system that gives a more consistent elasticity which is pretty important in a turntable belt. The $40,000 Naiad uses 3 belts, so it was no surprise to see 2 on the Planar 8. The multi-belt system gives even better speed consistency. This is just another thing you don’t see, but that is going on behind the scenes to give you better sound.

The Neo PSU speed control box is pretty interesting as well. It uses a specially designed DSP circuit that gets its reference from a very stable crystal. This can feed a perfect AC signal to the 24V AC motor. The beauty of this design is not affected by the power coming out of your wall, which as we all know can vary a lot over time. You’ll have perfect speed irrespective of how good or bad your AC power is over time. Rega then fine tunes the Neo to the motor in that exact Planar 8. Another advantage of having the motor speed control away from the turntable is the reduction in any possible noise. This idea is not new to Rega, as several high performance turntables have a separate power supply for the motor. The Neo also makes switching from 33 to 45 happen with just the push of a button.

We finally get to the tonearm, another new design called the RB880. The Planar 6 uses the RB330, the same arm found on the Planar 3, but the Planar 8 gets a jump to the RB880. This aluminum and stainless steel beauty has far better tonearm bearings than their other models, with tolerances down to 1000th of a millimeter! They also improved the bearing structure in the RB880. There is absolutely zero chatter in the bearing (a pet peeve of ours) and it just feels totally free of any friction.

We also like the three point mounting system Rega incorporates in their better tonearms. When coupled with one of their higher performance cartridges, this assures you of a perfectly aligned cartridge.

The phono cables coming out of the Planar 8 are of very high quality and even have locking RCA ends for a tight fitting connection. They are a hard wired connection all the way through, so they are not detachable.

When you think about all this great new tech Rega put into the Planar 8, you can be sure it's going to be a great performer.

Performance

For testing the Planar 8 we set up the new Cambridge Audio Edge NQ preamp with the Edge W power amp, with the new EGlo Phono stage from EAT. Rega will probably be mad at us for not using theirs, but we wanted to give this guy a whirl too! This was a very popular demo cut we used to play a lot back in the late 80s and it was fun to pull it out again. The very first thing that jumped out was the total silence in between the notes. We have found that as you move up to better and better turntables, the level of surface noise you hear goes down dramatically. The Planar 8 was outstanding in this regard! The only noise we ever heard was when there was a scratch on the LP causing a pop. The track is all acapella with lots of rhythm. The four male vocalists each stood out with fantastic sound staging. We were quickly tapping our toes to this great version of a classic song.

Next up was John Prine’s Bruised Orange album from 1978 (the year Audio Advice opened for business). One of our all time favorite cuts is on this album: That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round”. This is full of great harmonies, but the true test is being able to hear the overdubbing of the recorders and being able to separate out the penny whistle playing at the same time. The bass track on this album can be over bloomed if the system is not right, but with the combination we had set up for this listening session, the sound was just magical. Every instrument stood out and the whole recording felt super energetic. We think this is one of the big pros of the Planar 8, the music just seems to come to life! Dynamics are incredible. Another thing about this recording is you need a cartridge/tonearm combination that can track really well to make it through with no distortion. The combination of the new RB880 arm with the Apheta 3 tracks about as well as anything we have ever heard. It sailed through this and some of the other more difficult passages.

And speaking of hard to track with lots going on, we pulled out The Neophonic String Band’s title album from 1977 on Direct Disk Labs. This one has lots of strings with several very hard to track vocal cuts but the Planar 8 just ate it up, making all of the instruments come to life. The harmonics on the strings were just rich as all get out on “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” and we never sensed any strain in the vocals on “In the Pines”. We also found ourselves tapping both feet to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown”!

Finally, we grabbed another Direct to Disc, this time from JVC Japan, Sugarloaf Express recorded in 1977. This album features Lee Ritenour and a host of other great jazz musicians. If you like jazz and run across this one in the used bins, be sure and pick it up. The title track starts out with some very dynamic percussion with lots of cymbal action. The Planar 8 put these right up front and crystal clear. In contrast to this, Ritenour’s electric guitar comes in very smooth and softly in the background before taking over. This was just beautiful with the Planar 8!

You know you have a great system put together when all you want to do is pull out more vinyl and when other people coming into the room they just stop and listen, which is exactly what happened with this testing system.

Overall Recommendation

As we said, you can get the Planar 8 in three versions. If you have a great cartridge already that will work with the RB880 arm, you might consider the model without a cartridge. However, we feel, the combination with the Apheta 3 is unquestionably the way to go. The cartridge mates perfectly with the RB880 arm and Rega’s method of turntable isolation used in the Planar 8. The sound that combo produces is full of energy, separates instruments amazingly well, tracks like crazy, and gives you a totally silent background. Plus it is just one heck of a lot of fun to listen to! These are hollow with an aluminum ring that goes in between the foot and the plinth. Rega developed these as the first step in keeping vibrations from getting into the turntable.

The plinth design on the Planar 10 comes directly from what Rega learned when making their no holds barred Naiad turntable. This design was first used in the Planar 6, then modified for the Planar 8 which shares the same type of plinth. You get a concept of just how lightweight the plinth is when you start unpacking the Planar 10. Rega uses material from the aerospace industry called Tancast 8. Tancast 8 is a polyurethane foam core that Rega sandwiches between high pressure laminate. The laminate is super thin yet very rigid. The Tancast 8 coupled with the HPL (high-pressure laminate) appears to be a great way to get close to the much more expensive carbon fiber plinth’s characteristics found on the Naiad turntable. On the Planar 8 and Planar 10, Rega leaves the edges open and greatly reduces the size of the plinth to reduce mass even more. If you look at a Planar 8 or 10, you’ll see that the plinth is cut out to just have what is necessary to hold the other critical components. The plinth is basically just a skeleton for the feet, motor mount, bearing, and tonearm. The new Planar 10 plinth is actually 30% lighter than the one found on the RP10 model it replaced.

When you look closely at Rega turntables starting with the Planar 3, you’ll notice a structure that sits on top of the plinth and couples the tonearm mount to the platter bearing. This is Rega’s famous double bracing design. On the Planar 10, Rega uses a ceramic top brace and phenolic resin bottom brace to increase rigidity between tonearm mount and main platter bearing. Rather than making the brace a solid piece of material, Rega reduces mass and cuts out most of the material much in the way a structural beam is made. This double brace design helps the cartridge/arm combination pick up even more information in those delicate record grooves! Plus we love the way the ceramic top part of the brace matches the platter too!

When you have a high performance audio system, anything that is added to the music can take away from your enjoyment. On turntables, one of the most important things we have found is the quality of the bearing. We suspect this is why on some turntables the silence between the notes sounds even more silent than normal. If you think about it, any noise made by the bearing sitting under the platter will get transmitted up to the platter and picked up by your stylus. When Rega came out with the Planar 8, they developed a new low mass central bearing assembly. The subplatter is single machined piece of aluminum with a hardened steel spindle that sits inside a custom brass housing. Rega took this design and improved the mechanical integrity even more for a main bearing that is about as good as anything we have seen. Of course, this all trickled down from what they learned in the Naiad as they tried to get as close as possible to the integrity of its hub assembly.

When you talk about space age materials, Rega can surely brag about the ceramic used for both the main platter and top brace. The RP10 had a similar ceramic platter. As our Rega rep told us, it’s made for them by a company that produces nose cones for missiles out of the same material! Ceramic oxide powder is compressed, fired, then diamond cut for a marvelous finished product. The platter itself is quite heavy and Rega gives it a flywheel effect by adding mass around the outer edge. We’ve talked about this in other turntable reviews, but for those of you wondering about the flywheel effect it's a great idea. On a turntable, unless you are a DJ, it really does not matter if it comes up to speed instantly. Most people push the on button then a few seconds pass before they lower the stylus. One goal of a turntable is to spin at a perfect speed. If you have a round disc, with a heavier outer edge, this keeps it spinning more constantly with minimal variation. Yes, it may take a few seconds to get up to speed, but once it gets there, it's more likely to stay constant. Weighting the outer edge gives it this flywheel effect. And we have to say, the ceramic platter looks and feels even cooler than their famous float glass designs!

When Rega designed the Naiad turntable they came up with a motor mounting system that was different than anything they had done before. This originally carried over to the Planar 8 and was improved upon even more on the Planar 10. They mount their precision 24v low vibration motor from the bottom. This keeps any stress from being put on the motor while at the same time holding it perfectly still for better speed stability. It also keeps any energy from being transferred to the plinth. Rega also individually matches up each motor with the external power supply. This does two things for the sound. Speed is as good as it gets and by matching up the electronics of the outboard power supply to the motor, motor vibrations are reduced, pretty cool!

The motor pulley has two precision slots for the dual belt system. This is another level of tech derived from the Naiad and used in both the Planar 8 and Planar 10. The belts themselves are pretty special too. Being a maker of belt drive turntables, you can imagine the Rega team is always interested in new and better materials for their belts. They did a lot of work with a team of chemists and ultimately came up with a new belt material called EBLT. Rega and the chemists developed a new curing system for this material that gave it a more consistent elasticity. Now that they had this great material, they had to figure out a way to machine it into a belt that was as round as could possibly be made. They teamed up with a company that makes motor parts for Formula 1 racing cars to design their own machine to precisely create this new belt. Think about that for a minute. They developed a new material, then built their own machine to produce it so it would give you perfect speed. While many companies buy off the shelf generic belts, Rega goes to this length for better sound!

Rega also goes to great lengths to power the precision motor. With the Planar 10, you get an external power supply called the PL10 PSU. The electronics inside are the same as those used in the RP10, but they improved the chassis that houses them. They use a very high stability crystal to generate a perfect square wave. This wave is then manipulated using digital signal processing to give the motor a perfect and constant power signal. Then, each and every one is fine tuned to make the motor run as smoothly as possible. This system also means the motor gets a perfect signal no matter how bad the power coming out of your wall is. The PL10 PSU also gives you the convenience of being able to switch from 33 to 45 with the push of a button.

When you backtrack through the bearing, spindle, platter, motor, belts, and motor power supply, you see all of the attention Rega puts into the Planar 10 just simply to spin the platter. It seems like overkill, but boy oh boy, when you get perfect speed, magical things happen to your sound!

Now we are getting to the last few, but very important parts of the Planar 10. First we have the brand new RP3000 tonearm. Rega tonearms have always had some of the best bearings we have seen on turntables. They take pride in very tight tolerances. On some entry level turntables you can wiggle the arm around and even feel some play in the bearings. We’ve never encountered this on a Rega and they seem to keep improving their bearing technology with each new model. Rega set out to find a way to machine their tonearm bearings down to a 1 micron accuracy. This allowed them to assemble the entire tonearm with no adhesive at any point during its construction. You may wonder what is so important about tonearm bearings.

If you think about the size of the tiny modulations in the grooves of a record, it's pretty simple. You want your stylus to pick up as many of these modulations as possible. If your tonearm has friction going either up, down, left, or right, your stylus will not have a chance to pick those subtle modulations up. Also, if the tonearm wobbles in any way at all, it could cancel out some of the signal coming from the grooves.

The RB3000 also uses a very low mass aluminum arm tube they designed to reduce resonance and stress. You’ll set the stylus pressure the conventional way using a zero balance then turning a knob. Rega has a pretty unique antiskate adjustment on the RB3000 which we really like. It is a little tube you pull out from the arm, with antiskating force going towards zero as you pull it out. There are markings for tracking force, but this should be pretty cool to use with an antiskate test record to really dial it in. We can’t wait to try this out when we get our demo Planar 10.

The tonearm cables, like all Rega tables, are not detachable and these look like they are made of very high quality materials. They are hard wired from the tonearm all the way to the locking RCA connectors.

If you get the Rega Planar 10 with one of the better Rega cartridges, you’ll be able to take advantage of their three point mounting system. This triangular mount assures you of perfect alignment. While we are talking about Rega cartridges, we should also mention the package with the Apheta cartridge.

When we tested the Apheta 2 with the Planar 8, we fell in love with the combination. There is definitely something to be said for getting the phono cartridge from the same company that makes your turntable. When you think about it, Rega puts all of the effort you have just read about to make a perfect platform for your phono cartridge. A Rega cartridge is designed to drop into this beautifully designed system and perform as best as it can. Rega designs their cartridges to match up perfectly with their tonearms and tables.

The Apheta 3 takes the amazing sounding Apheta 2 and gets a new and improved stylus assembly. The Apheta 3 was designed side by side with the Planar 10 as Rega tried to make a cartridge closer in performance to their reference Aphelion cartridge. They developed a new fine line diamond tip, designed to reach even further into the record grooves to extract more information. It is then mounted through a slot in the end of the Apheta 3 cantilever. We can’t wait to give this a serious listening test.

As you can see from all this great tech, the Planar 10 is an impressive turntable. After hearing the Planar 8 Apheta 2 combo and being bowled over, we can not wait to hear the Planar 10 with the Apheta 3.

Performance

We got to hear the Planar 10 for a few brief moments. We heard it at our Music Matters event in Charlotte connected up to a McIntosh stack driving a set of Martin Logan electrostatic speakers. Unfortunately, this setup was out in our main lobby so crowd noise made it hard to tell much, until at one point things were quieter and the guys from Rega put on an old Johnny Cash LP. The emotion we heard in his voice was spectacular and everyone standing around just stopped talking to listen. Then the crowd got noisy again and before we knew it the team from Rega was packing it up to go off to one of our favorite analog reviewers.

Overall Recommendation

Based upon the very brief listen and the way the Planar 10 is put together, this could be a turntable that rivals the big rigs in the 10K+ range. It is obviously not for everyone, but bear in mind, your system is only as good as the first step, where the sound is pulled from the record. We will know more when we get a demo back in, but we think it's safe to say this is going to be one heck of an amazing table for the price.

Using the same DSP (digital signal processing) generator found in the RP10 the Neo is built upon a high stability crystal. The Aria is capable of working with both moving coil and moving magnet type cartridges. It quickly won a number of rewards from the British press for its high-level audio performance.

When Rega designed the Aria, they spent a lot of R&D time looking at new components that could offer a lower noise floor than anything they had used in the past. This is very important for a phono preamp, particularly when you are dealing with a moving coil cartridge, which has a very low signal level. Any noise that might come into the signal path could potentially mask those tiny details in the music that make your records sound more like a live performance.

The Rega Fono MC benefits from what Rega learned in the much more expensive Aria, and its circuitry is very similar. To accomplish such a low noise floor, Rega uses a FET (field effect transistor) from a company called Linear Systems. They are a 30-year-old Silicon Valley company specializing in high-end components for the audio and medical business. A FET like this one has a very high input impedance, so the tiny coils in your moving coil cartridge will effectively “not see” the FET as any type of additional load.

The RIAA section of the Fono MC uses a MUSES series op amp from a Japanese company called New Japan Radio. These are known around the world for audio purity and are found in uber high-end audio components all over the world.

Feature-wise, the Fono MC has about everything you would want in a phono preamp. While its adjustability is not quite up to our reference Sutherland Audio products, it gives you a lot more than most phono stages in this category.

A moving coil cartridge is somewhat like a work of art in that there are no real standards. Each designer comes up with what they think performs best. The way they design those tiny windings of the coils works best if the cartridge electrically sees a pretty specific type of load. If you load one incorrectly, the difference is dramatic. For instance, if you have a cartridge that wants to see a 400-ohm load and you set the load at 100, it will literally sound like you have thrown a thick blanket over your speakers. It’s that much of a difference.

By using different combinations of the dip switches on the back of the Fono MC (you have a selection of 70, 100, 150, and 400), it can work with 90% of all the MC cartridges on the market.

Moving coils also vary in the output. The Fono MC gives you what is basically a high or low gain setting -- either 63.5 or 69.5 dB of gain.

Rega also gives you adjustable capacitance, which is not something you see in a lot of moving coil phono preamps. You have a choice of 1000pF or 4700pF. For those of you picking up one of these to work with your new Rega Ania (or any Rega MC), you set it up for 1000pF, 100 ohms, and the higher 69.5 gain setting.

We do have one small gripe about these dip switches. When you look at the back panel, they are labeled left and right. At first, you may think that this means the left and right channels. It’s actually referring to the left and right side of the switches.

When you consider the modest price of the Rega Fono MC, it has a ton of great tech for its sub $500 price tag.

Performance

We tested the Fono MC with a Rega P6 and Ania cartridge. To complete the Rega circle, we used an Aux input on the Rega Brio integrated amp and a pair of the new Elac Adante bookshelf speakers.

This combination was just stunning. The Fono MC provided plenty of gain for the low output Ania with virtually no background noise. Bass notes reach very deep while the presentation of the treble and midrange is very smooth, yet you hear all kinds of tiny details in the upper end -- a trait most great moving coil cartridges have.

Overall Recommendation

If you are considering a Rega Ania Cartridge for your turntable (probably the P3 or P6), the Fono MC is a perfect match. The first stage is a symmetrical, complementary class A amplifier, using parallel connected Linear Systems ultra-low noise FET (Field Effect Transistor) transistors configured as a symmetrical compound pair input stage. The use of FET transistors ensures there is no bias current flowing in the cartridge coil so as not to upset the delicate magnetic geometry of the cartridge. The input circuit configuration also alleviates the use of any coupling components between the cartridge output and the input stage FET transistors, which would degrade the sound. The complementary ultra-low noise FET transistors are carefully graded and matched for optimum performance. This stage drives the passive high frequency part of the RIAA equalization stage.

The second stage is a symmetrical, class A, differential amplifier with a common base driver stage; this is also used as the active amplifier in the low frequency part of the RIAA equalisation stage. The third stage inverts the signal to provide the balanced output along with the output of the second stage; the third stage uses the same circuit topology as used in the second stage. The power supply is a symmetrical, discrete tracking power supply using fast diodes and a low noise voltage reference. Each stage has its own localized power supply and LED referenced current generators. To maximize headroom, the Aura has a power supply voltage, which is 60% higher than normally found in such a pre-amplifier. Very high quality, polypropylene capacitors have been used in the signal path. 1% tolerance polypropylene capacitors are used in the RIAA EQ stages and audio grade capacitors are used in the rest of the circuit. Gain I selects 69.5 dB (switch out) and Gain II selects 63.5 dB (switch in); this will provide an input sensitivity of 67 μV and 131 μV respectively for an output level of 200 mV unbalanced and 400 mV balanced. The balanced output is effectively 6 dB higher than the unbalanced output. It is advisable to start with the lower gain setting II and if necessary, increase the gain level to I if more level is required for lower output cartridges. Because the balanced output is effectively 6 dB higher, it could be advisable to select gain II setting when using the balanced output; this will also depend greatly on the sensitivity of the connected amplifier.

Capacitance
There are five different input capacitance settings of 1000 pF, 2000 pF, 3200 pF, 4300 pF & 5700 pF. Beginning in 1973, they made their name designing some of the world's best tonearms and turntables. Their founder, Roy Gandy, has made a career by taking a different approach to audio design. When most turntable companies were concerned with making their tables as heavy and dense as possible, Rega took the light and rigid path. This approach to turntable design has won Rega multiple awards for sound quality and they have some of the most devoted followers in all of audio. Since the 80s, Rega has also designed and manufactured other audio components such as amplifiers, speakers, and CD players. Rega takes a unique attitude to every product they design, just like with their tonearms and turntables. They never follow the trends but work to make improvements using any method to yield them. This generally results in Rega’s products having a unique look and design that is very distinguishable from everything else on the market. Companies like Rega have noticed that the price of materials like MDF and natural wood veneers has risen well past their viability as building materials for affordable high-end speakers. Ten years ago, Rega searched for an alternate material offering even better damping and resonance performance while keeping manufacturing costs in line. After a decade of research and testing, they decided to make their new enclosure out of fiberglass-reinforced cement.

Anyone who has worked with cement will know it is a very dense material, which works great when you need a dense, non-resonant enclosure. But cement can be brittle and often cracks and breaks apart. To remedy this, Rega perfectly blended fiberglass with cement to mold an enclosure with the density for a non-resonant cabinet and the structural integrity to last for lifetimes without cracking or breaking. Using GRC(glass-reinforced cement) makes the molded enclosure much lighter than cement alone, making the finished product's weight much more manageable. In fact, at 31.1 lbs, the Aya is very light for a floor-standing speaker. Rega can also mold the enclosure into their desired shape without forcing wood or MDF into this shape.

The front baffle is made from MDF and vinyl wrapped in a brushed aluminum finish that matches the GRC enclosure well. Then, they designed a plastic insert faceplate that holds the drivers. Designing the front baffle this way is vital as the different materials have different resonant characteristics. This will make resonance transfer between these materials much less than if they used MDF for all panels. This results in a light, very stiff enclosure with excellent resonance control. You will hear the drivers, not the cabinet, which is crucial for accuracy and transparency. And when you rap your knuckles on the cabinet, you can certainly tell it is one inert box! Rega is so proud of this design that they also cover the Aya with a limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, which is excellent.

Small In Stature, Huge in Visual Appeal

When choosing a speaker for your home, it is very important that you like the way they look. But even more important than visual appeal is that the speaker is sized right for your room. The Rega Aya is a small speaker for a floor-stander. It will fit into any room at 10.2 x 34.3 x 8.5 inches. This is very important as many live in smaller apartments or homes, limiting speaker choices. Most people in this situation will look at stand-mount speakers due to their smaller size. This is where the Aya excels as it is as small or smaller than many stand-mount speakers once on the stands, and they weigh about the same. This gives music lovers an actual floor-standing speaker that will work where most won’t. Aya’s look and build give users a unique experience compared to many on the market. The Aya is front-ported to allow more adaptability with room placement. You can put them closer to the front wall without any of the room boom effects of rear-ported speakers.

Rega's feet for the Ayas seemingly allow the speakers to float over the floor. This gives the speakers a cool room appeal and prevents resonance from transferring from the speakers to the floor. These feet also tilt the speakers back, allowing better vertical dispersion and time alignment. This will make the speakers sound taller than they are and allow better realism. The high-quality binding posts are integrated into the metal foot section, allowing banana or spade connections. There is no bi-wiring or bi-amping ability with the Aya, but with good amplification should not be needed anyway.

The Rega Aya does not come with grills but is available from Rega(the tweeter has a dome protector installed). Rega felt like giving additional savings on the price of the speakers without grills and offering them as an option due to the popular option of running speakers without grills. A lot of music lovers feel that grills negatively affect performance, and many think speakers look better in their “naked state.” This saves materials in production and saves users from having unneeded grills to store. They will be available for an additional small fee if you want them. We think these speakers look fantastic, and we would hate to cover the unique and cool-looking front baffle of the Aya.

Rega Designed Drivers, Special Crossover Design

Since Rega began designing speakers, they have mostly used their own drivers. This allows Rega to have full control over both the parameters and the overall quality of the drivers used in their speakers. Designing the drivers themselves for a speaker model allows the Rega engineers to focus on perfecting the drivers so that they work in the GRC enclosure. Also, the engineers can design each Aya driver to work seamlessly together through the audio band for better realism.

Rega chose to use their ZRR tweeter in the Aya. This tweeter's Zero-Rear-Reflection technology uses a large hole in the pole piece to vent the tweeter's back wave. But unlike other tweeters that simply dampen and reflect part of this wave back into the tweeter, The Rega design allows these waves to “bounce” off of a specially shaped rear chamber that allows no reflection back to the dome itself. Without these reflections, the tweeter is more accurate and less distorted. More music, less noise!

Rega chose their MX-125 5” midbass driver for the midbass driver in the Aya and a 7” RR7.8 mid/woofer reinforces the bass region. These two pulp cone drivers are loaded into the GRC enclosure in the same airspace, and these drivers are aligned on top and below the tweeter, respectively. The crossover is simple and uses good-quality components to crossover the two woofers to the tweeter. Then Rega chose to use an enclosure-mounted band-pass filter to allow the 5” mid-woofer to play upper midrange up to the tweeter and the 7” woofer to produce the lower bass. So technically, both drivers receive the same music information. Still, due to the tuning and band-pass filter, their response works together to produce a flat, musical response from the bass into the upper midrange and treble, where the tweeter takes over. This keeps the crossover simple for less loss and allows Aya's unique enclosure and filter design to tune the drivers acoustically. While Rega calls the Aya a 2.5-way design, it combines electrical with acoustical methods to achieve its goals.

The Rega Aya is a 6-ohm speaker design that is friendly to just about any amplifier on the market today. At 89.5dB efficiency, they aren’t the most efficient speakers on the market, but in real-world use, we have seen great results from smaller integrated amplifiers with the Aya. At this year's Audio Advice Live show, we first heard Aya in The Sound Organization's great room. The great Rega Elicit MK5 integrated amplifier was powering them. We were impressed with how easily the Elicit MK5 powered the Aya’s to satisfying levels without breaking a sweat. When we tested the Aya in our test room at Audio Advice, we found that the Aya is best suited to high-quality integrated amplifiers or receivers. The Aya is a speaker that will reward you as you move to better and better amplification. Yes, any amplifier with a good quality power supply with power that Aya to satisfying levels. But as you upgrade your power, so will the sound coming from the Aya.

Rega does not post the specifications of the Aya's frequency response, but testing has shown that the bass goes down to a -3dB point at 40Hz. This is very respectable performance for a speaker of its size, and only true bass lovers will need to add a subwoofer. We ran the Aya in our test room with different amplifiers and setups, and we rarely felt the need to add a subwoofer.

Our Take

We were excited to get the Aya back to our test room from the show at Audio Advice Live. Make no mistake though, the little Brio drove them quite well.

We did find the Aya sound is greatly influenced by where you position them. In our space, we tried them about 2’ off the front wall at first and felt they were lacking in bass. But by moving them closer to the wall behind them, the bass was dramatically improved and they came to life. What was most interesting was the image they produced in either position. With the Rega Aya being relatively short, we were expecting a lower soundstage. The tilting they have done worked its magic and they had a sound that felt like it was above the top of the speaker with super precise imaging. Even close to the back wall with a cabinet in between them they still produced a spectacular sound stage.

We tried a variety of music from classic rock to jazz and classical and the thing they jumped out the most was the dynamics this speaker can portray. For its price and size, the Rega Aya makes for a viable floor-standing option for people who thought only a stand-mount speaker would fit in their room. They will produce far more bass than most bookshelf speakers that would take up the same space with amazing imaging and dynamics. And the Aya draws attention wherever it is placed, thanks to its high-tech design and unique looks. And if you are just starting out and want something really good the Aya, with a Rega P3 turntable and Brio integrated amp, will make some pretty incredible sound for the total investment cost.
