These pieces now go for 10 to 50 times their original selling price even though they are 60+ years old! Even the Marantz gear from the 1970s is in high demand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe reason for this is the classic signature sound developed by Saul Marantz that made them big hits when they were first released. What is pretty neat about Marantz is that they have a group of engineers in Japan whose only job is to keep the best of Marantz having that same sonic signature. They are trained to recognize this sound and spend all of their time listening to new Marantz models to fine-tune the circuitry to meet that standard. These engineers are called Marantz Sound Masters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first two 30 pieces embodied all of this great heritage in an analog-only integrated amp and SACD player\/music streamer. The Model 40n has the same great cosmetic touches as the 30 models and actually gives us a few new features not found on the earlier units. Almost all of the original Marantz gear had a very symmetrical appearance with the same number of knobs, dials, and buttons on each side. The 40n captures this with perfect symmetry, even putting the power button and headphone jack on opposite sides. The controls are on a smaller faceplate that appears to float on top of a carbon fiber-looking larger box. And we just love the classic Marantz portal right in the center that we first saw in the 1960 Model 9 tube power amp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was hard for us to tell any build quality change from the great feel of the 30 series components. This is pretty impressive too when you consider the combination of the 30 pieces is well over twice the price of the Model 40n.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou get the same very high-quality speaker binding posts on the rear that accommodate bare wire or a banana plug. The included remote is also nicely done with a bit of heft to it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Model 40n has that look that makes you just want to reach out and turn one of the knobs. Everything moves as smooth as silk with a wonderful fit and finish. It certainly embodies audio luxury! We are seeing some brands just measure at 1K with high distortion, which is misleading in our opinion. And while it does not fully double down into 4 ohms like the Model 30 does, it does deliver 100 watts per channel into a 4-ohm load. Marantz uses a pretty big toroidal power transformer in the Model 40n, which accounts for its very stout weight of over 36 pounds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Model 40n uses the same type of Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules found in the bigger Model 30. These are fine-tuned to give you that classic warm Marantz sound that draws you deep into the essence of your favorite music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the analog side of things, there is a very good moving magnet phono preamp built-in. This trickles down from the phono preamp they created for the Model 30 and is more than just an afterthought. You can feel confident you are at about a $250 separate phono preamp level with the one they include. There are three line-level inputs labeled, CD, line, and recorder. Like its bigger brother, Marantz also gives you a record out. You may ask what that is all about. Well, there is a resurgence of people buying vintage cassette and reel-to-reel tape recorders and going back to making their own mixtapes. There is a connection set that puzzled us and that is a set of power amp inputs. These allow you to use the power amp only of the Model 40n, and this would be cool were there a set of preamp outs, but there are not any preamp outs. We feel like the more likely use case would be you would love your 40n but want a bit more power, which you could do if it had preamp outs. \u003cspan\u003eIn our mind, Marantz should have included preamp outputs instead of preamp inputs\u003c\/span\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe digital section has a Toslink and coax digital in. Another connector we think is really great to see is the HDMI Arc connection. This will let you connect your Arc capable TV to the Model 40n to send the audio from its internal apps or anything connected to it back to the Model 40n. The neat part about an HDMI Arc connection is that it takes over the volume\/mute and power controls, meaning your TV remote will operate the Model 40n and switch it to the HDMI Arc input when you turn on your TV. Most TVs made in the last 5 years have Arc features on board.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you have a USB drive full of music, you can connect it to the rear of the Model 40n too. There is a wired ethernet connection and wireless antennas. You can stream any Hi-Res music on your network right into the Model 40n. And like the Model 30 SACD streamer, Heos is on board too. Heos was developed by Marantz’s sister company, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/denon\"\u003eDenon\u003c\/a\u003e, and has evolved to be an excellent streaming platform. Heos gives you most of the popular streaming services. Heos used to get a bad rap, but it has greatly improved and worked solidly for us although we do recommend if you are going from Heos to Airplay that you stop the Heos app first to avoid any switching noise- we did encounter one. Integration between the app and the stick remote with the 40n was seamless which was kind of nice being able to just pick up the remote and pause or fine-tune the volume without having to open our smartphone. In addition, there is Airplay 2 plus Bluetooth 4.2. We love those heavy-duty binding posts! Getting it on the network was easier than most pieces of gear as we just looked at network devices, clicked on it and our iPhone loaded all the network credentials via Airplay. It might require using the Heos app for Android users. Just for grins, we have set up an area with a somewhat weak WiFi signal to see how well units do in this situation, as let's face it, not everyone has a hard-wired connection where they want to put the gear. Some other units have had streaming dropouts in this same position, but the large dual external WiFi antennas on the 40n did the trick as we never had any issues. We used Roon via Airplay and Tidal via Heos and both worked well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe expected we would get dynamic and well-controlled bass from the 40n based on the large power supply and we were not let down at all. Our reference tracks there came through quite well, although some larger amps we have tested including the Model 30 had even more impact and control as you might expect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 40n continues that classic Marantz warm sound as even when cranking things up, it still held together without a sense of strain. The soundstage was also very 3 dimensional. When we connected back up our reference \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/mcintosh\"\u003eMcIntosh\u003c\/a\u003e stack, it was obvious the Mc stack had far more warmth and inner detail, but when you consider the price of the 40n, it is extremely musical for what it costs and on the right recording was throwing out a huge soundstage with ease.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were driving some pretty sensitive speakers with the 40n during our tests so its power rating of 70 watts per channel never really came into play. The CINEMA 50 in comparison has six 8K inputs and zone 2 only.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA video input feature that may be important to those of you with older video sources that do not have HDMI is a single-component video input and 2 composite video inputs. The CINEMA 40 has what is called their A to H circuitry to upgrade those low-res video signals to a higher resolution too. The CINEMA 50 only has HDMI video inputs so you score another with the CINEMA 40.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe CINEMA 40 and 50 both have 5 analog inputs including a MM phono input and 2 each digital and coax inputs. No difference there between the two units.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen it comes to handling surround sound formats, the CINEMA 40 and CINEMA 50 have them all covered. Both have Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and one that not many AVRs have these days, Auro 3D.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were very curious if the CINEMA 40 had an upgraded DAC set over the CINEMA 50, but it turns out that both use a very expensive Analog Devices DSP chipset. So in terms of how the unit renders immersive audio effects, they will be the same, and they do an incredible job there. Both units have onboard processing for 11 channels plus 4 independent subwoofer channels. For those of you who know that \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/videos-reviews\/home-theater-subwoofer-placement-options\"\u003emultiple subwoofers\u003c\/a\u003e are even greater than the sum of their parts, this is fantastic news! Being able to use the built-in Audyssey Multi EQ XT32 to adjust each sub individually is a huge deal! Also, all of the 11 channels have preamp outs so you can add a power amp to any channel set when you are ready for an upgrade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile they come with Audyssey, there is an option coming that will allow you to upgrade either of these to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/videos-reviews\/dirac-live-room-calibration-tips-tricks-setup-guide\"\u003eDirac Live room correction\u003c\/a\u003e. The timing and pricing of this have been the subject of a lot of speculation but we finally have what we think are some solid dates and prices, but of course, these could all be subject to change. There are also rumors floating around about a new version of Dirac on the horizon. We are not sure if that is why Marantz decided to wait or if that will be an option on these. There will be a bandwidth-limited version of Dirac Live coming in the spring of 2023 which should sell for $259. This will be plenty for most people as where you really want to perform room correction is below 500 Hz, which is the cut-off for this version. The full-band version will be $349. Dirac also offers an option that, to our knowledge, is not included with any AVR or processor called Dirac Live Bass. This takes subwoofer blending to a new level and it looks like this will be priced the same for the Marantz units as other brands which is $349 for a single sub and $499 for multiple subs. However, this upgrade will not be out until sometime in 2024. If you do the Dirac upgrade, we highly recommend you purchase a good microphone like the one from MiniDSP as the old saying “garbage in garbage out” really applies here. The CINEMA 40 is rated at 125 watts per channel with 2 channels driven across the full audio band at .08% THD. The CINEMA 50 has a rating of 110 with the same specs. At first look, you may not think the two are that different, but when you look under the hood, you can clearly see the power amp sections in these units are not the same.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMarantz uses upgraded parts in the signal path of the CINEMA 40. And if you look closely, you can see that each of the 9 amp channels is on its own circuit board. The other obvious difference is the CINEMA 40 is taller than the CINEMA 50 by about 1 ½”. Both receivers were put in Direct mode. After we flipped back and forth, just once, it is clear the CINEMA 40 is warmer, more effortless, and just seems to control the deep bass much better. Don’t get us wrong, both were very pleasant to listen to with the classic Marantz warm sound, but the CINEMA 40 epitomizes the sound those Marantz Sound Masters use as a reference. Did it produce as wide and deep soundstage as some separate components that cost a lot more? No, nor did it have the ultimate inner detail you get with expensive separates. But what it does, is nothing wrong. It is extremely easy to listen to and could probably fool some of your audiophile friends into thinking they were hearing something other than a great home theater receiver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eOverall Recommendation\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, the big question comes down to is the CINEMA 40 worth the extra cost over the already great CINEMA 50? If you need legacy analog video inputs, must have 7 HDMI inputs, or must have 2 other zones, those will be the factors that lean to the CINEMA 40 . We feel like most people will not have those needs and it will purely come down to the audio performance. If you enjoy 2 channel stereo, to our ears, it is worth the extra cost. Or if you have speakers that are on the lower end of the sensitivity spectrum, the extra guts offered by the more robust power amp section will be another reason. However, if you are more about all of the great features, you’ll find them on the CINEMA 50 with its very good amp section, and it may be the better choice and will allow you to take the price difference between the two and put it towards better speakers or a second subwoofer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have two wonderful choices in the CINEMA 40 and CINEMA 50 with everything they offer and you really can not go wrong with either one. Of course, the home theater geek in us then needs to take a look at the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/marantz-sr8015-11-2-channel-4k-ultra-hd-av-receiver-with-heos-built-in\"\u003eMarantz 8015\u003c\/a\u003e. It has dual versions of the same DAC’s, 2 more channels of processing for 13 plus 2 subs, more analog video inputs, and 7.1 analog in for those SACD fans. Plus it has a far beefier power amp section. This new listener does not really care about surround sound but does want better audio from their TV experience and the best possible audio for the money with stereo listening.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eWith their history of making amazing sounding two-channel components and home theater products with some of the best features and sound on the market, they came up with the idea of combining those two technologies into a compact unit that had natural Marantz sound with some useful video switching plus convenience features and options usually only found in full-fledged surround AVRs. Keeping the compact height while maintaining great sound was really important to their engineers as they wanted the Stereo 70S to be able to sit on top of a credenza and not look out of place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eMarantz also does not mess around with the power ratings and tries to make you think it has more power than it really does. You’ll find it rated with both channels driven at .08% distortion across the full audio band of 20-20,000 hz at 75 watts per channel. Had they used the spec many brands use of just measuring at 1000 Hz and higher distortion, it would deliver 100 watts per channel. Its very beefy power amp section should be more than plenty for almost any speaker that would make sense to pair with the Stereo 70S, especially things like the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/bowers-wilkins?series=755\"\u003eBowers \u0026amp; Wilkens 600 serie\u003c\/a\u003es, which would make a great match.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThe elegant front panel looks similar to their latest releases with the look of carbon fiber on the sides and a raised section containing a few key controls. On the Stereo 70S you’ll get a larger input knob with smaller ones for a speaker selector for the two possible pairs, balance, bass, treble, and then another larger one for volume. The power button on the left is symmetrically placed with the dedicated ¼” headphone jack on the right. The Marantz porthole which gives you a view of what you are controlling is in the center. Ever since the early days of the classic Marantz integrated amps, their front panels have kept this great simple, but totally balanced look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eWhen we \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/6awZ-WDWGR0?si=RXGrGJm7tHG84KQg\"\u003etested the NR1200\u003c\/a\u003e back in 2019, we felt the volume knob was a little flimsy. New for this year is the ability to upscale any 1080P or 4K signal to 8K, which you can select in the very intuitive setup menu. Speaking of the menu, this is a good one. It has a wizard to walk you through everything which is nice, but if you take a deeper dive, it has great on-screen explanations for every single choice helping you get the best from your new Stereo 70S.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eAll of the video inputs support the formats you expect in a nice home theater receiver with HDR, HLG, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and Dynamic HDR. ALLM or Auto Low Latency is there too and it has a pass-through for gaming where you can select the pass-through input you desire in the setup menu. Vinyl lovers will appreciate the nice moving magnet phono input. This uses the same phono preamp as their more expensive receivers have.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThe speaker connections are all gold plated with the ability to use either bare wire or banana plugs. These are a little nicer than you normally see in the price range and should allow you to torque down the bare wire pretty well and the bananas had a nice tight fit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThere is a main preamp out and a zone two one which would let you add more power and\/or another amp to power a second zone. While the preamp outs are always active, in the menu, you can select a preamp only mode which disconnects the loudspeaker outputs thereby creating a lower distortion and higher max voltage out. This feature means customers can find a sensible upgrade path should they eventually desire more power or an even higher quality amplifier.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eYou’ll find a subwoofer one and subwoofer two connections on the rear, but bear in mind they are in parallel and not discrete. But for what is a two-channel receiver, you get far more control over the subwoofer than you do in most. You can select the crossover frequency in 10Hz increments up to 120hz, then it jumps in bigger steps. There are adjustments for the main speakers' distance and the sub, along with level controls for each.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThere is also a neat feature called Smart Select on the remote with four buttons. This will give you a world of access to many Hi-Res streaming music services. You also have Airplay 2 and Bluetooth. Voice control lovers will appreciate the updates this year with Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri, and Josh AI all being choices you could use. But we have to say, for basic listening, the remote control is pretty elegant too and easy to read and use. The listening modes are “Stereo”, which will include M-DAX if it is on and the tone controls; “Direct” which will bypass M-DAX and the tone controls, and finally “Pure Direct” which turns off the display circuitry to give you that last bit of noise reduction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eOk, that is a lot of features, so now let's talk about what Marantz used to make this new receiver sound so good.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThe DAC’s inside the Stereo 70S can handle Hi-Res Audio up to 24\/192 and DSD up to 5.6 megahertz. The power amp portion is very similar to what they use in their more expensive audio-only integrated amps. The power amp section is a fully discrete Class A\/B design just like what you find in high-performance separate power amplifiers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eBut the real magic came in with the addition of HDAM. Marantz developed HDAM or High Dynamic Amplifier Modules back in 1992. They consist of fully discrete circuitry with hand-selected components to give you the quietest possible signal path in the preamp stage of their products. This is the first time HDAM has shown up in a Marantz slimline 2 channel receiver. Units we have heard with HDAM have an almost completely silent background which helps allow all of those tiny details in your music to come to life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n  \u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance Testing\u003c\/h3\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eWe connected the Stereo 70S up to a pair of Bowers \u0026amp; Wilkins Anniversary Edition 606S2 on their dedicated stands and plugged in their entry-level but very good ASW608 subwoofer. We loved the way we could use the Marantz menu to really dial in the subwoofer just like on a nice home theater receiver. In our space, we wound up with the crossover set at 80hz, but it was great to be able to experiment quickly using the remote and a TV we had connected. It makes integrating a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/home-audio\/speakers\/subwoofers\"\u003esub\u003c\/a\u003e into a 2 channel system super simple. HDAM is just dead silent so your music seems to come from a completely black background with excellent imaging. With the sub engaged, we could rock out in our fairly large room with never a sense of strain. We did later try it without the sub and found the bass could get a little out of control if we really pushed it, but for what this unit is, it did a great job. We can’t expect it to sound like the bigger Marantz units that cost 2-3 times as much. And the best part is, even after our fairly long listening session, there was zero sense of strain. Vocals had good texture and body, and instruments were presented with detail and musicality. The bass had warmth but also allowed the detail to shine through. Bass is one area where Class D amplifiers shine in their ability to have tight control over the bass drivers, and the M1 showcased this talent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDua Lipa’s new album \u003cem\u003eRadical Optimism\u003c\/em\u003e. allowed us to test the M1’s ability to handle more dynamic bass and music with more drive. On the first track, we knew that this combination had the same synergy that we know this brand combination can create. The Bass was tight and detailed, allowing us to get the slam of the bass but with control. The midrange had good detail while remaining smooth. The treble followed the smooth trend with good detail. Imaging and soundstaging were also something to note for an all-in-one. The center image was good and locked in, while the instrument placement was good. The soundstage was not as wide as some of the upper-level Marantz integrated amplifiers, but this was somewhat expected as this is an all-in-one that has a lot stuffed into one enclosure. Ever since 1952, when Saul Marantz sold his first piece of gear, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/marantz\"\u003eMarantz\u003c\/a\u003e has been known for making audio equipment that has a very sweet musical sound. Music lovers and audiophiles have loved their sound over the past seven decades. This would normally have been quite a tall task, but Marantz had a secret weapon called the Marantz Sound Master. After Saul Marantz retired, the owners of Marantz were very clever to start training young engineers on how to identify the classic Marantz sound. Marantz followed up with more models in this series, but we have been waiting for a more affordable model to show up that would appeal to a wider audience. The Model 60n is just what many music lovers have been looking for. A fairly affordable integrated amplifier with network streaming and analog inputs to be the centerpiece of a great music system.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \n  \u003cp\u003eWhen we first took the 60n out of the box, we were surprised to see how much it weighed for its relatively modest price in the world of high-end integrated amplifiers with streaming. This guy weighs in at almost 29 pounds, which immediately tells us it has a pretty massive power supply and some serious build quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe outer appearance is just what you expect from the models in this lineup. The early Marantz \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/home-audio\/components\/integrated-amps\"\u003eintegrated amps\u003c\/a\u003e had a very symmetrical look with a mirror image layout of the controls on the right and left side. Many of the original Marantz pieces also sported a round porthole-like meter in the center of the unit, which is also present on the Model 60n for display functions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0572\/3281\/8260\/files\/Low--Marantz---MODEL-60n-In-situ-Photography-1---16x9.jpg\" alt=\"Marantz Model 60n in silver\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJust like the other models in this series, the 60n will be available in a black or silver gold finish. We also love the look of the raised front panel sitting on top of what looks like a carbon fiber body. But of course, good looks are only part of the story, and you’ll also want great sound and features in a piece that will become the heart of your two-channel audio system.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003eTaking a look at the features, there is not much lacking in the 60n. You’ll find three analog inputs plus a moving magnet phono input. There is a preamp output should you wish to add more power later, with a separate power amp and a mono subwoofer output. Digital inputs include optical, coax, HDMI-ARC, and USB A. These are high-res audio capable of up to 24bit 192K and 11.2 megahertz DSD. And with all of this, you also get network streaming via the HEOS ecosystem. HEOS was developed years ago by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/denon\"\u003eDenon\u003c\/a\u003e, a sister company of Marantz. It has a pretty big variety of music services on board and also is compatible with Airplay 2, so if your favorite is missing, you can easily use Airplay 2. Bluetooth receive and transmit are built in as well. These connections will allow you to have a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/turntables\"\u003eturntable\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/home-audio\/components\/cd-players\"\u003eCD player\u003c\/a\u003e, two more analog sources, and probably more digital sources than anyone would ever have. We especially appreciate the HDMI-ARC input for \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/home-theater\/televisions\"\u003eTV\u003c\/a\u003e audio. Well, it appears they did not! We expected to see a standard power supply but the Model 60n has a large toroidal power transformer. The internal layout is also a more costly design with the sensitive audio components well isolated from the power supply and extruded aluminum heat sinks for the output transistors. \n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0572\/3281\/8260\/files\/High--marantz_MODEL60n_sg_StudioD_01.jpg\" alt=\"Internal view of Marantz Model 60n\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe amplifier section is a Class AB current feedback with push pull design rated at 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 80 watts per channel into 4 ohms. Seeing all of this we then wondered if Marantz had used a less expensive version of their famous HDAM circuitry in the 60n. Again, the answer is no, they did not and use their HDAM SA2\/HDAM SA3 technology. HDAM stands for Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module. Many years ago, the Marantz engineers became disappointed with off the shelf op amp circuits that had evolved to be more cost effective but worse sounding. They developed their own discrete audio circuitry with hand selected components to deliver the best sound. Those Marantz Sound Masters played a big role in this tech as their ears played a big role in product selection and Marantz has used their HDAM tech in the better gear ever since.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003eSo, it would seem Marantz has knocked the ball out of the park with the Model 60n, but we did have a nitpick with the subwoofer out. Unlike the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/marantz\/marantz-model-40n-integrated-amplifier\"\u003e40n\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/marantz\/marantz-model-m1-wireless-streaming-amp-2-1\"\u003eM1 streaming amps\u003c\/a\u003e that are above and below the 60n in terms of price, the subwoofer crossover is fixed at 150 Hz instead of being variable like the other two models. We think they did this to keep it completely analog for vinyl enthusiasts who prefer a pure analog amplifier, as having variable crossover at this price point is not practical to do in the analog domain. But for those of us who plan to use mostly digital sources, it would have been nice to have a way to vary the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/home-audio\/speakers\/subwoofers\"\u003esubwoofer\u003c\/a\u003e output. But that is really the only thing we can fault the 60n on, as it packs in a whole lot of great Marantz tech and build quality for its price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWe have also reviewed the newer \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/marantz\/marantz-model-m1-wireless-streaming-amp-2-1\"\u003eMarantz M1\u003c\/a\u003e streaming amp and the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/marantz\/marantz-model-40n-integrated-amplifier\"\u003eModel 40n\u003c\/a\u003e, which are $500 less for the M1 and $1000 more for the 40n as of September 2024. We thought it would be helpful for those of you considering the Model 60n to look at what you get from each of these models in comparison.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003eWe were pretty impressed with all the M1 offered for the price. It had a lot of great features and sounded pretty darn good. If you plan to use your digital centerpiece mostly for enhanced TV sound from a pair of stereo speakers and\/or a subwoofer, the M1 is a really good choice as it also has night mode and dialog enhancement, which are not on the Model 60n. And it's got selectable crossovers for the subwoofer which is nice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBut, as good as this made in Japan small streaming amplifier is, the Model 60n is just in a whole other realm from a sonic standpoint. And that is to be expected as the M1 is made to be tucked away and weighs in at just a little under 5 pounds while the 60n has over 6 times the heft with its much more massive amplifier section. There really isn’t anywhere in an audio comparison the M1 sounds better than the 60n. The HDAM circuitry in the 60n and it's far better amplifier components make it no contest. So if you have the space and budget for the 60n, we think its well worth the extra $500, plus it also just looks so cool too!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0572\/3281\/8260\/files\/Marantz-Model-60n-04-_1.jpg\" alt=\"Marantz Model 60n in black on a console table\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\n\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Model 40n, which came out in 2022, is a more interesting comparison. At first glace to us, they looked far too similar to justify the extra cost for the 40n. That is until we dug into things a little deeper. There is an 8 pound weight difference in the two models which is attributed to the power supply and chassis. You’ll get a bigger toroidal power transformer in the 40n, and the chassis itself is much more sophisticated, with more layers and over twice the thickness of the 60n. The output transistors sit on copper plates in the 40n as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMarantz spent more time hand-selecting the components in the HDAM circuitry in the 40n which also gives it an edge. The 40n has Marantz Musical Digital Filtering, which is not present in the 60n either. Plus you get variable crossovers for the sub out. And if it matters to you, the 40n is is made at the Marantz factory in Shirakawa, Japan, while the 60n is manufactured in Vietnam.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eWhile it is only rated at 10 watts per channel more than the 60n, the 40n just sounds more dynamic and can control harder to drive speakers better. But, with all that said, the 60n is one heck of a value. Vocals had warmth and texture, the guitar retained plenty of fine detail, and the presentation was relaxed without becoming overly soft. The MODEL M1 sounded slightly more spacious and refined, but the difference was relatively small.
