Working out of a tiny shed in Hope, Arkansas, his creativity and artistry helped him design a speaker that set an entirely new standard for music reproduction in the home. Now, over 70 years later, his Klipschorn is still highly sought after by music lovers, while the company he founded has grown to be one of the largest speaker companies on the planet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePaul Klipsch had four design principles in mind when he created the Klipschorn: High Efficiency, Low Distortion, Controlled Directivity, and Flat Frequency Response.\u003c\/strong\u003e If you visit the Klipsch factory, you’ll see these on the wall when you first walk in. Klipsch has stood by these principals in every product they produce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subject of today’s review is the new Klipsch Cornwall, now in its 4th edition. The Cornwall has a pretty interesting history. Back in 1957, Paul Klipsch wanted a speaker to provide a center fill channel for use in large rooms where the Klipschorns were widely spaced apart. The design he liked did not have a horn-loaded woofer like the larger Klipschorn. His friends told him it would be heresy to produce a speaker like this, but Paul told them that is exactly what he was going to do and he was going to call it the Heresy. The design idea was so popular, customers started demanding a bigger version of the Heresy, and in 1959, the Cornwall was born. Every couple of decades enough new technology has come out in driver and cabinet design that Klipsch will update their classic Heritage series products. The Cornwall IV has all of the latest thinking on Paul’s four guiding principles the engineering team at Klipsch could develop out of the technology available today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eDesign \u0026amp; Build Quality\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Klipsch Cornwall IV is pretty similar in outward appearance to the Cornwall III. It is a fairly large floor-standing speaker design. \u003cstrong\u003eYou’ll find a horn tweeter, horn midrange, and front-firing 15” woofer in the new Cornwall IV.\u003c\/strong\u003e The woofer is also ported on the front of the cabinet. As with all Klipsch speakers, their four pillars of speaker design we described in the section above are part of the DNA inside the new Cornwall IV.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you pull the grill off the Cornwall IV, you’ll see some of the updates Klipsch incorporated into this new model. It’s not a subtle change with a brand new midrange driver and horn, new tweeter lens, new crossover, new porting system, and some subtle cosmetic updates.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Cornwall IV, like the LaScala and Heresy, can be placed in corners, against a back wall away from corners, or slightly out from the wall, toed in just a bit.\u003c\/strong\u003e Each position, like all speakers, will affect the sound and we recommend if you have some flexibility to play around to find what works best in your room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing part of the Klipsch Heritage series, the Cornwall IV is handmade to order at the Klipsch factory in Hope Arkansas. \u003cstrong\u003eAll Heritage \u003c\/strong\u003eseries\u003cstrong\u003e products use only the finest book-matched wood veneers which are arranged to give you a mirror image look where they are spliced together.\u003c\/strong\u003e Every pair of Heritage speakers starts out with grain matched panels, cut from the same block of wood. They travel together throughout the assembly process to assure you of two natural wood veneer speakers that have an almost identical appearance. Obviously when you put this level of detail into the cabinets alone, build quality on the Cornwall IV is just spectacular. It was a lot of fun switching back and forth between the two models, discovering why the Forte III commands a higher price. One of the things that really stood out in the Forte III was the openness of the midrange over the Heresy III and how well the Forte III threw out a huge soundstage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we got pulled off the grills on the Cornwall IV before listening, we were grinning, as \u003cstrong\u003ewe could see Klipsch took the type of driver used for the midrange in the Forte III and improved upon it even further!\u003c\/strong\u003e The Cornwall III had a pretty similar type of midrange horn as the Heresy and we thought the Forte III was actually better in the critical midrange area than the Cornwall III.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe contacted Klipsch to get a good understanding of all the updates and it turns out, \u003cstrong\u003evirtually everything about the Cornwall has been updated in the IV version except for the 15” woofer. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with the horn tweeter, the compression driver is the same as the previous model, but they have updated the phase plug which gives the tweeter a wider coverage pattern in the higher frequencies. The midrange compression driver is a brand new K-702 model coupled with a new Tractrix horn. This new combination produces a much wider soundstage with a bigger sweet spot. Klipsch says the clarity, dynamics, and detail is also much better on the new Cornwall IV. Not only do you get more detail, but the sound is even smoother and sweeter with the new Tractrix design and K-702. Both of these updates should contribute to a speaker that can give you a more three-dimensional soundstage while maintaining the power and impact of great horn design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch also has applied its Tractrix technology to the front-firing ports for the 15” woofer.\u003c\/strong\u003e These improve the speed and tightness of the low end. The three front-firing ports were pretty impressive looking on the Cornwall III, but when you see the Cornwall IV, it takes on this look of serious business!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe crossover (which is the electrical component inside a speaker that routes the correct frequencies to each driver) has been totally updated using audiophile-grade components. \u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch used the voicing from the Klipschorn and La Scala and changed the crossover slopes to match with the new K-702 and Tractrix horn.\u003c\/strong\u003e According to Klipsch, they were able to use steeper slopes than on the Cornwall III. The wiring between the speaker connections, crossover, and the drivers is also a higher performance wire than in the previous model. Finally, the dual binding posts on the rear have been updated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCosmetically there are some updates as well. On the Cornwall III, the small riser was always the same color as the wood veneer. Klipsch has moved to a matte black finish on all the risers, which on the wood finishes gives the speaker a look like it is floating. The front bezel is thinner (x to x) and they have given the grill some subtle cosmetic improvements too. Instead of the classic horn logo in the corner, the Cornwall IV now has a scripted “Cornwall” in the top center of the grill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are unfamiliar with Klipsch speakers, horn speakers have an allure that captures the ears of many music lovers. They are typically very easy to push, only needing a great, low power amplifier to get them to concert levels. \u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch speakers have this “you are there” feel with power and impact you just do not get with conventional speakers until you spend more than a nice car.\u003c\/strong\u003e One complaint some people have had over the years is the horns sounded a bit harsh to their ears, but as drivers and the actual horn itself has improved, any trace of harshness has disappeared. If you have not heard a Klipsch Heritage series speaker in years, you might want to give them a listen, the emotional quality of the music they can convey to you is something pretty special.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you read our review comparing the Klipsch Forte III to the Heresy III, you probably understood we really loved the Forte III. After spending about an hour listening to the Cornwall IV, we have to say, they sound like a Forte III on steroids. In other words, very impressive!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe connected them up to a low power integrated amp and proceeded to play some of our favorite comparison tracks. \u003cstrong\u003eThe first thing that jumps out at you (literally) is how dynamic they are. On Dave Matthews Grave Digger the drums just exploded into the room.\u003c\/strong\u003e His voice was dead center and just the right size, but it felt like a band was in front of us with all the dynamics and power we were feeling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe switched over to Enya Caribbean Blue which has some of the typical Enya haunting sounds with big basslines coming in. Voices filled the room and when the deep bass hit, you could really appreciate how those 15” ported woofers sound both huge, yet fast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne cut that had really impressed us on the Forte III was Whole Lotta Love from Led Zepplin. All of the percussion and guitars in the middle of the song when things are moving from left to right had sounded very big on the Forte III and much smaller on the Heresy. We had suspected it was due to the new Tractrix horn and this was confirmed with the Cornwall IV. They have a similar type of horn, but just bigger and once again the transitions from left to right felt big and even outside the speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy this time, a crowd had gathered in our listening room as \u003cstrong\u003emany Audio Advice people were interested in hearing these brand new speakers, so we cranked up Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watch Tower. With the ability to output an SPL level of 116dB, these can rock!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with the tweeter, the Forte IV uses a titanium compression diaphragm driver coupled to a patented Klipsch horn. All tweeters like to beam as the frequencies increase. Klipsch has updated the phase plug to improve the linearity of the high frequencies. In effect, it ensures controlled uniform directivity all the way up to the high frequencies. This driver was developed for the recent Cornwall IV. We were curious as to what exactly a polyimide was and did a little digging. It turns out to be a pretty exotic plastic polymer that has a very high resistance to heat. Polyimide is used in high-tech military applications and high-temperature fuel cells. The midrange driver is coupled to a modified Tractrix® horn. The horn uses Klipsch’s patented Mumps tech which gives you extremely even sound in the listening area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 12” woofer is made of a fiber composite cone material. To extend the bass even deeper, Klipsch adds a rear-mounted 15” sub-bass passive radiator. Passive radiators enhance the bass from the active woofer. The Forte IV gets down to 38Hz. These use a steeper slope than the other models and are used in the Forte IV. They also upgraded the quality of the components used in the crossover. While you never see a speaker crossover, it is a critical link in the chain as it splits up the incoming signal and sends different frequencies out to the drivers. A cheap or poorly designed crossover can ruin the sound of a speaker. From the tech used in this new crossover network, it appears to be first class.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you might expect from a Heritage series Klipsch, the cabinet is very solidly built, in the case of the Forte IV it is made of ¾” MDF, then the matched veneers are applied.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eTechnical Differences in the Forte III and Forte IV\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe love the fact that Klipsch, like just a small handful of other speaker manufacturers who actually make their own speaker drivers, spells out the actual driver name they use for the speaker components. This makes it easier to compare model to model and to see what they have changed when a model is upgraded.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTweeter\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Both the Forte III and Forte IV use the K-100-TI 1” titanium diaphragm compression driver on a K-79T horn. The driver is the K-702 model while on the Forte III they use the K-70 model that uses a titanium diaphragm as compared to the polyimide material on the K-702 version. We should point out Klipsch also uses polyimide for the tweeter diaphragm in the La Scala and Klipschorn. Both the Forte III and Forte IV use the same K-703-M horn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWoofer and Passive Radiator\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e These are both identical on the Forte III and Forte IV.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCrossover Network\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Klipsch made some big changes here, using both more expensive components in the crossover network and changing the slope to more closely match what they do in the La Scala and Klipschorn. The crossover points remain the same at 5.2kH and 650Hz. It appears the goal was to get the sound of the Forte IV to be closer to a Klipschorn!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCabinet\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e While the Forte IV is ¼” shorter in height than the Forte III, this is due to the redesign of the base the speaker sits on. All new Forte IV color versions have the same matte black base. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance Testing and Comparison\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe set the Forte IV and Forte III up in our listening room to test the Forte IV and how it compares to the Forte III. We did an asymmetrical setup so each speaker would be the same distance apart and in our rectangular room would be just a mirror image on distances from the side walls. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe pulled them off the wall about 25” and used a tape measure to get them exactly the same for both models. To power them we used a McIntosh stack consisting of their \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mcintosh-mt5-precision-turntable.html\"\u003eMT5 turntable\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mcintosh-c49-solid-state-preamplifier.html\"\u003eC-49 preamp\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mcintosh-mc152-150-watt-stereo-amplifier.html\"\u003eMC152\u003c\/a\u003e, and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mcintosh-mcd350-cd-player.html\"\u003eMCD350 CD Player\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is always important when comparing things to perfectly match levels, which was a cinch with these two as they are identical in sensitivity. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe decided to make this an all-analog comparison and pulled out some classic records from years gone by, which of course plays right into the legacy behind the Forte.  For our testing, we listened to one of our all-time favorites the Getz\/Gilberto with The Girl from Ipanema, the Amanda McBroom Dreaming Album, a very old Direct-Disk of the Neophonic String band, and finally the Persuasions No Frills album.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou probably noticed a focus on midrange here, which is where we expected to hear most of the improvements in the new Forte IV.  First, it is totally clear the Forte IV is an evolution of the Forte III.  The sound profile between the two is similar, but the differences we heard were pretty big to our ears.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the Getz\/Gilberto we heard a big difference in just how much more effortless the voices and saxophone sounded on the Forte IV.  When we flipped back to the Forte III, they almost sounded strained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe title cut Dreaming was even bigger.  Her voice floated in space and sounded very natural on the Forte IV, and when we switched back and forth to the Forte III, we felt her voice had almost a coloration to it.  We actually had to do a double-take and pull the grills off to make sure the horn itself was not different on the two as it sounded like we were hearing some horn resonance on the Forte III in comparison.  Our theory is the new midrange driver and steeper crossover slopes are a much better match to the horn itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext up were the Persuasions, who are an acapella group, and we heard the same differences in the midrange improvement but even more so with multiple voices going on.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn every single cut we had tried up to this point, the stereo image was also wider, deeper, and more precise in space on the Forte IV.  But when we switched to the next album, that difference became huge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Neophonic String Band is a great old bluegrass record.  On the Forte IV, everything was perfectly in space, spread out very well.  When we switched back to the Forte III, it was like the image just went back into the two speakers.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNeedless to say, we were very impressed with the new Forte IV. The original version of the 600M has a horn waveguide that is 5.75 inches versus the new 600M II, which is 6.75 inches and extends almost to the edge of the baffle on the sides and top which will help with diffraction. We’ll discuss more about why this update is so important a little later.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThey come in two standard finishes, walnut or ebony,\u003c\/strong\u003e and boast satin-painted baffles with a new scratch-resistant finish so they should be pretty immune from getting dinged up if you move them around. We also like that they come with magnetic grills, which is a nice touch in this price range. It’s clear the aesthetic design team spent some time making sure the RP-600M II looked impressive when you popped off the grill. They accented the Tractrix horn with copper to match the cool-looking copper finish of the special cerametallic woofers. When you look at the two series side by side, the RPII’s seem to have a much cleaner and higher-end look on the back. They’ve upgraded the rear input panel with higher quality jumpers and anodized bolts to lock in the speaker wires. The venting technology also allowed them to remove the ferrofluid which was used to cool tweeters, for an even more effortless sound. To our ears, this new design is far sweeter than the previous model. People who have thought inexpensive horn-type speakers were a little edgy will have that opinion totally changed when they hear these.\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eThe 6 ½” Cerametallic™ woofers used in the RP-600M II have been updated for flawless sound reproduction, minimum distortion, and maximum efficiency with larger diameter voice coils and aluminum shorting rings. Their Cerametallic material uses multiple layers of metal on the cone which not only makes it very stiff to avoid breakup, the combination of materials pushes the natural breakup point of the driver far beyond the frequency range it operates in. The only thing that remains the same over the new model is the cone material itself, the entire motor structure of the woofer has been redone. When Klipsch designed The Fives, their incredible powered speaker, they developed some new woofer technology that was used in the new Reference Premiere models. The new Reference Premiere models all got improved internal bracing as well. When a symphony orchestra or your favorite band swells to a full crescendo, the feeling of power you sense is what makes live music so much fun. It takes a highly efficient speaker to be able to reproduce those wide swings in volume and be able to portray that big crescendo like you are really there. \u003cstrong\u003eThe RP-600M II’s are rated at 94.5db efficiency which is super high but a touch lower than the 96db that is reported on the original 600M’s. We put them on some heavy-duty Sound Anchor stands and wired everything up with Transparent cables. The room was about 14 by 19 with 10 ft ceilings and we had them about 10 feet apart on the long wall and about 2 feet off the rear wall. This is the same setup we used when reviewing the first 600M. When you set these up, you will want to make sure they are equal distance from the back wall and from your listening position.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWe played a Dave Matthews “Grave Digger”, which has a decent amount of deep bass and the first thing we did was make sure the sub that was sitting in the room was not connected.\u003c\/strong\u003e They were producing a staggering amount of deep bass for a speaker their size just like the originals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003e\u003ciframe src=\"https:\/\/widget.qobuz.com\/track\/46955987?lang=en\u0026amp;zone=us-en\" width=\"300\" height=\"90\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWe switched over to something simple with Adele’s “Hello”. When the track first started, the piano filled the soundstage from left to right with great harmonic definition. \u003cstrong\u003eWhen Adele comes in, you can tell how the efficiency of the speaker lets you hear all of the little subtle emotions in her voice as you can easily hear all the tiny changes in volume level that other less efficient speakers might mask a bit.\u003c\/strong\u003e Interestingly, her voice floated almost a foot above the top of the speakers making for a very nice presentation. The soundstage felt just a bit wider than with the original 600M most likely due to the wider wavehorn guide which we really enjoyed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ciframe src=\"https:\/\/widget.qobuz.com\/track\/108818871?lang=en\u0026amp;zone=us-en\" width=\"300\" height=\"90\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\n\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTo really give the imaging a test, we put on the acapella version of “Leave It from Yes”. If you’ve heard this cut it is full of overdubbed voices that jump out all across the soundstage from left to right. \u003cstrong\u003eThis track sounded big, rich, and full, once again very impressive. The RPII seemed to perform with just a touch more liveliness and a larger soundstage to us.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAfter this, we felt we should probably test them out on something more modest like they might be typically used on, so we moved them to an entry-level \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/cambridge\"\u003eCambridge Audio stack\u003c\/a\u003e with some basic speaker stands and cables. \u003cstrong\u003eOn this setup, once again they had us scratching our heads at how well they did on the same cuts, however, we’ve learned something over the years in playing around with gear. A really good speaker will show you the improvements as you make the front end better.\u003c\/strong\u003e This was certainly the case with the Klipsch RP-600M II as you could easily hear that they sounded better on the higher performance McIntosh stack just like the original 600M did as well. But, just like the original, the new 600M II is just incredible for the money in how well it pulls you into the music and makes you forget about your system and enjoy your favorite musicians.   While they will sound pretty good if you just plop them down, it's worth it to spend a little time setting them up to get the most out of them. To our ears, we found the new 600M II to be much sweeter sounding, have a bit deeper bass, and have an even purer midrange than the older model. There are other speakers in this price range that can keep up or maybe surpass it in terms of transparency, but we have not heard anything at the same size and price that can reproduce deep bass like they do and give you that emotional impact of a live performance.
