We started out with Encanto because we thought all the music would really put these speakers to the test. We were blown away by the way these speakers painted the voices in the songs across the whole room. Klipsch has stood by these principals in every product they produce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subject of today’s review is the new Klipsch Cornwall, now in its 4th edition. The Cornwall has a pretty interesting history. Back in 1957, Paul Klipsch wanted a speaker to provide a center fill channel for use in large rooms where the Klipschorns were widely spaced apart. The design he liked did not have a horn-loaded woofer like the larger Klipschorn. His friends told him it would be heresy to produce a speaker like this, but Paul told them that is exactly what he was going to do and he was going to call it the Heresy. The design idea was so popular, customers started demanding a bigger version of the Heresy, and in 1959, the Cornwall was born. Every couple of decades enough new technology has come out in driver and cabinet design that Klipsch will update their classic Heritage series products. The Cornwall IV has all of the latest thinking on Paul’s four guiding principles the engineering team at Klipsch could develop out of the technology available today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eDesign \u0026amp; Build Quality\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Klipsch Cornwall IV is pretty similar in outward appearance to the Cornwall III. It is a fairly large floor-standing speaker design. \u003cstrong\u003eYou’ll find a horn tweeter, horn midrange, and front-firing 15” woofer in the new Cornwall IV.\u003c\/strong\u003e The woofer is also ported on the front of the cabinet. As with all Klipsch speakers, their four pillars of speaker design we described in the section above are part of the DNA inside the new Cornwall IV.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you pull the grill off the Cornwall IV, you’ll see some of the updates Klipsch incorporated into this new model. It’s not a subtle change with a brand new midrange driver and horn, new tweeter lens, new crossover, new porting system, and some subtle cosmetic updates.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Cornwall IV, like the LaScala and Heresy, can be placed in corners, against a back wall away from corners, or slightly out from the wall, toed in just a bit.\u003c\/strong\u003e Each position, like all speakers, will affect the sound and we recommend if you have some flexibility to play around to find what works best in your room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing part of the Klipsch Heritage series, the Cornwall IV is handmade to order at the Klipsch factory in Hope Arkansas. \u003cstrong\u003eAll Heritage \u003c\/strong\u003eseries\u003cstrong\u003e products use only the finest book-matched wood veneers which are arranged to give you a mirror image look where they are spliced together.\u003c\/strong\u003e Every pair of Heritage speakers starts out with grain matched panels, cut from the same block of wood. They travel together throughout the assembly process to assure you of two natural wood veneer speakers that have an almost identical appearance. Obviously when you put this level of detail into the cabinets alone, build quality on the Cornwall IV is just spectacular. It was a lot of fun switching back and forth between the two models, discovering why the Forte III commands a higher price. One of the things that really stood out in the Forte III was the openness of the midrange over the Heresy III and how well the Forte III threw out a huge soundstage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we got pulled off the grills on the Cornwall IV before listening, we were grinning, as \u003cstrong\u003ewe could see Klipsch took the type of driver used for the midrange in the Forte III and improved upon it even further!\u003c\/strong\u003e The Cornwall III had a pretty similar type of midrange horn as the Heresy and we thought the Forte III was actually better in the critical midrange area than the Cornwall III.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe contacted Klipsch to get a good understanding of all the updates and it turns out, \u003cstrong\u003evirtually everything about the Cornwall has been updated in the IV version except for the 15” woofer. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with the horn tweeter, the compression driver is the same as the previous model, but they have updated the phase plug which gives the tweeter a wider coverage pattern in the higher frequencies. The midrange compression driver is a brand new K-702 model coupled with a new Tractrix horn. This new combination produces a much wider soundstage with a bigger sweet spot. Klipsch says the clarity, dynamics, and detail is also much better on the new Cornwall IV. Not only do you get more detail, but the sound is even smoother and sweeter with the new Tractrix design and K-702. Both of these updates should contribute to a speaker that can give you a more three-dimensional soundstage while maintaining the power and impact of great horn design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch also has applied its Tractrix technology to the front-firing ports for the 15” woofer.\u003c\/strong\u003e These improve the speed and tightness of the low end. The three front-firing ports were pretty impressive looking on the Cornwall III, but when you see the Cornwall IV, it takes on this look of serious business!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe crossover (which is the electrical component inside a speaker that routes the correct frequencies to each driver) has been totally updated using audiophile-grade components. \u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch used the voicing from the Klipschorn and La Scala and changed the crossover slopes to match with the new K-702 and Tractrix horn.\u003c\/strong\u003e According to Klipsch, they were able to use steeper slopes than on the Cornwall III. The wiring between the speaker connections, crossover, and the drivers is also a higher performance wire than in the previous model. Finally, the dual binding posts on the rear have been updated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCosmetically there are some updates as well. On the Cornwall III, the small riser was always the same color as the wood veneer. Klipsch has moved to a matte black finish on all the risers, which on the wood finishes gives the speaker a look like it is floating. The front bezel is thinner (x to x) and they have given the grill some subtle cosmetic improvements too. Instead of the classic horn logo in the corner, the Cornwall IV now has a scripted “Cornwall” in the top center of the grill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are unfamiliar with Klipsch speakers, horn speakers have an allure that captures the ears of many music lovers. They are typically very easy to push, only needing a great, low power amplifier to get them to concert levels. \u003cstrong\u003eKlipsch speakers have this “you are there” feel with power and impact you just do not get with conventional speakers until you spend more than a nice car.\u003c\/strong\u003e One complaint some people have had over the years is the horns sounded a bit harsh to their ears, but as drivers and the actual horn itself has improved, any trace of harshness has disappeared. If you have not heard a Klipsch Heritage series speaker in years, you might want to give them a listen, the emotional quality of the music they can convey to you is something pretty special.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you read our review comparing the Klipsch Forte III to the Heresy III, you probably understood we really loved the Forte III. After spending about an hour listening to the Cornwall IV, we have to say, they sound like a Forte III on steroids. In other words, very impressive!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe connected them up to a low power integrated amp and proceeded to play some of our favorite comparison tracks. \u003cstrong\u003eThe first thing that jumps out at you (literally) is how dynamic they are. On Dave Matthews Grave Digger the drums just exploded into the room.\u003c\/strong\u003e His voice was dead center and just the right size, but it felt like a band was in front of us with all the dynamics and power we were feeling.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe switched over to Enya Caribbean Blue which has some of the typical Enya haunting sounds with big basslines coming in. Voices filled the room and when the deep bass hit, you could really appreciate how those 15” ported woofers sound both huge, yet fast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne cut that had really impressed us on the Forte III was Whole Lotta Love from Led Zepplin. All of the percussion and guitars in the middle of the song when things are moving from left to right had sounded very big on the Forte III and much smaller on the Heresy. We had suspected it was due to the new Tractrix horn and this was confirmed with the Cornwall IV. They have a similar type of horn, but just bigger and once again the transitions from left to right felt big and even outside the speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy this time, a crowd had gathered in our listening room as \u003cstrong\u003emany Audio Advice people were interested in hearing these brand new speakers, so we cranked up Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watch Tower. This cut epitomizes classic rock and roll and the Cornwall IV had everyone in the room grinning.\u003c\/strong\u003e You just get this feeling of a live concert!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThere are speakers out there that might reveal a few more subtle harmonics and come across more extended than the Cornwall IV. However, what they do not have is the attack and realism the Klipsch horn drivers deliver.\u003c\/strong\u003e We were also very impressed with the deep bass performance of the 15” bass driver with the new front-firing Tractrix ports. It's full and fast! \u003cstrong\u003eIf you love that feeling you get at a live concert, the Cornwall IV will get you really close yet it also has the finesse for light jazz and classical.\u003c\/strong\u003e Voices also sound very open and effortless with the new midrange driver system. Sandy hired Kevin Voecks to be the main designer for Revel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the time, Audio Advice was selling Snell loudspeakers which Kevin helped design. He had also taken part in the design of the iconic Mirage M1, an Audio Advice favorite. Kevin has spent a lot of time at Canada’s NRC. This is their national research center where there is a huge amount of audio test gear available for Canadian companies to use in designing speakers. The Mirage speakers came out of the NRC. Today, Mark Glazer, who joined Harman in 1989, is the Principal Engineer for Revel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRevel has several model series, and today’s review focuses on a new model in the Performa Be or beryllium series, the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/revel-performabe-f226be-3-way-floorstanding-loudspeaker-each.html\"\u003eF226Be\u003c\/a\u003e. This is a modest-sized floor-standing speaker we previewed at our recent Music Matters. Everyone who listened to it was very impressed by its performance, so we decided to put it through its paces! Not only does this give it a more elegant appearance, but \u003cstrong\u003ea curved cabinet is very rigid and reduces internal vibrations.\u003c\/strong\u003e You’ll have a choice of four color options on the F226Be with gloss black or white, walnut, and a stunning automotive type silver finish. We previewed the silver version at Music Matters and everyone loved the finish. It almost makes the speaker disappear into the room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Revel F226Be tower speaker is a little over 41” tall, about 10” wide, and 13” deep at the very deepest point. You can tell \u003cstrong\u003eRevel took some of the F206 in the Performa series as a starting point but upgraded the cabinet, speaker drivers, and crossover, for a completely new speaker.\u003c\/strong\u003e It may look similar, but wow, are the audio differences big!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike many Revel speakers, \u003cstrong\u003ethe F226Be is a three-way design with dual woofers.\u003c\/strong\u003e The magnetic grill hides the drivers and the front-firing port.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBuild quality on Revel speakers is fantastic.\u003c\/strong\u003e With their big investment in automated tooling, they can turn out beautiful cabinets where everything fits perfectly. The dual banana plugs on the back are rock solid. The base of the speaker has threaded plugs for some well-made spikes. Revel even gives you the option of a pointed spike for carpet or a rounded one for hard surfaces, a nice touch we don’t see very often. The F226Be uses some pretty cool driver technology which we cover next.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eFeatures \u0026amp; Technology\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRevel is like a few of our other favorite companies who make some “no holds barred” gear which lets them learn, then filter down those learnings into more affordable products. \u003cstrong\u003eThe \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/revel-salon2-floorstanding-speaker.html\"\u003eRevel Salon 2\u003c\/a\u003e is one heck of an amazing speaker, but at 146 pounds each, almost 5 feet tall and $22,000 a pair, not everyone can afford them. But, what they learned in making the Salon 2 has been showing up in their more affordable speakers like the F226Be.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRevel developed the beryllium tweeter for the Ultima series and carries it over to the PerformaBe models.\u003c\/strong\u003e Beryllium is a rare earth metal that is a perfect fit for a high-frequency driver. When you compare it to aluminum or titanium, it is 4 to 5 times stiffer with 3 times better damping, and at about half the weight! You might think a metal dome tweeter would have a harsh sound, as many have displayed this character over the decades. \u003cstrong\u003eThe Revel beryllium tweeter is not only super fast and open but smooth as silk with never a trace of harshness.\u003c\/strong\u003e Part of this is due to the design of the tweeter itself, but Revel has also spent a lot in R\u0026amp;D on the waveguide, which also has a lot to do with its great performance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg alt=\"Revel F226Be Tweeter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/wordpress2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/F226Be_tweeter.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the Ultima series, Revel uses titanium for the midrange and woofers. This very expensive material was too much for a lower cost speaker so Revel started experimenting with different cone materials to come up with something that offered close to the level of performance measurements they had with the drivers in the Ultima. What they came up with is pretty cool.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey start out with a light weight aluminum cone. They then use a plasma discharge to coat both sides of the cone with a coarse ceramic coating. The result of this is a three layer material which provides constrained layer damping. We’ve seen turntable manufacturers use the constrained layer damping technique in both tonearms and plinths. When you join two different materials that are of different thicknesses, the result is a material that has very little resonance or breakup. Revel only pushed this far as they knew what could be done from the Ultima.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRevel developed a 5 ¼” midrange driver and a 6 ½” bass driver for the F226Be. They use two of the bass drivers which gives us bass that is very tight and deep and fast as lightning.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of these great drivers would go to waste with a badly designed crossover and cabinet. \u003cstrong\u003eRevel uses very high end film capacitors and air core inductors in their crossover. The cabinets are extremely well braced and the curve adds to their rigidity.\u003c\/strong\u003e The sum of all this great technology is one of the best speakers we have ever heard in this size and price range.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg alt=\"Revel F226Be Mid Bass\" src=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/wordpress2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/F226Be_mid_bass.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe connected the F226Be’s up to our reference Mark Levinson stack to see just how well they could perform when fed a great signal. Many of the people who attended Music Matters had commented to us how amazing these little speakers were. We really did not spend much time with them at our event, but \u003cstrong\u003eafter a few cuts, it was very clear to us the F226Be is a giant killer!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you get a pair of these, you will want to spend some time precisely setting them up. \u003cstrong\u003eJust like with all tower speakers, you’ll want to find the spot off the wall where they open up, but just as importantly, you really need to make sure you get them positioned exactly the same in terms of distance off the back wall.\u003c\/strong\u003e They throw out such an amazing image, if you get them properly positioned, you’ll have pinpoint imaging that is very deep and extends way outside the speakers. At first we did not have them perfect and had a little bit of smearing of the image, but after we got them dialed in, WOW! On the 90125 Yes Album, the A Capella version of Leave It, was just spectacular in the way all those overdubbed voices fall into a precise point in front of you both inside and outside the speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFor those of you new to high performance speakers, one very enjoyable feature of some great speakers is how you can sense the performers in front of you.\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eFor this to happen at its best, your ears need to be the same distance from each speaker. In other words, you need to be dead center between them\u003c\/strong\u003e. It usually works best if you are the same distance from them that they are apart or a little more or less in each direction. You can sense a bit of it if you are not centered, but the magic happens when you listen this way. It’s also better if your chair does not extend up behind your ears too. When we refer to imaging and sound being in front of us, we are talking about listening in this type of position.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are several aspects about these speakers that got us really excited. \u003cstrong\u003eThe deep bass you get from the two 6 ½” drivers is just astounding!\u003c\/strong\u003e We played some cuts we use for electric bass resolution and they sounded just fantastic. The scary part though is how they allow you to pinpoint the exact position of the pluck of the bass string. A lot of speakers can throw out deep bass, but they are not able to provide the resolution for your ears to locate the exact position of the bass instrument in the soundstage. When we first played Dialog Part 1 from Chicago’s 5th album it was super detailed. The F226Be’s continued to do this on every cut we tried. We are pretty sure this is due to the narrow cabinet face coupled with their great driver technology and very inert cabinet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRevel speakers have always been very neutral with no trace of hardness and that trend continues with the F226Be.\u003c\/strong\u003e The brush of a cymbal will sound like it's floating right there in front of you, but when you have lots of complicated things going on in the music, they never ever get the least bit strained in the top end. This was especially apparent on a Mozart selection we played from a pretty cool group we discovered while lost in Roon, the Trondheim Soloists. The strings were very extended yet extremely detailed with no harshness at all, something that is pretty hard to do. That beryllium tweeter is just super sweet and detailed!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn area where the $22K Revel Salon’s excel is midrange resolution. They allow you to hear all of the emotions in a performer's voice, the emphasis they might be putting into bending a guitar string, or the tiny volume changes in a sax solo that make you feel like you are hearing it live. Even a cut from the 1971 Joni Mitchell album Blue, really drew us into the music. If you have never heard River, pull it in on Tidal or your favorite streaming service and relax. Hopefully, your system will reveal all the nuances in her voice the F226Be’s did for us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe’ve felt every Revel speaker we have tried in the past was outstanding, but we have to say, \u003cstrong\u003ethis is the most impressed we have ever been with a speaker from Revel or just about any speaker company.\u003c\/strong\u003e These little guys have an elegant appearance with a sound that challenges speakers costing twice as much!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eOverall Recommendation\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you have read this far, you probably understand that a true high performance speaker does not come cheap. Sure, $7,000 a pair is by no means inexpensive. We feel if you are considering speakers anywhere in the $5,000-$15,000 range, you should hear these.
