Their driving goal since their inception has been to provide music lovers with great value products. The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is one shining example of this philosophy. It has become known as one of the best deals in high-performance audio and is the best selling turntable in the world under $400. Pro-Ject Audio has factories in the Czech Republic and Slovakia with their R&D headquarters outside of Mistelbach Austria.

The company has two divisions, one specializing in all things related to turntables and another division making small audio components that are known for over-delivering for their size.

While the team at Pro-Ject Audio Systems are friends of ours, we must admit that we think they have way too many products. Right now there are 33 different models of turntables and a full 7 different series of electronics. The sheer volume is overwhelming, making it easy to get numb to their product releases.

The downside is that when this happens, a real jewel may not get the attention that it deserves. One such jewel is their latest Digital Box design, the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital. It’s a digital micro preamplifier that can fully unfold MQA files.

If you aren’t familiar with MQA, it stands for Master Quality Audio, and has been gathering momentum over the past year for its ability to deliver very high-resolution audio over streaming. Tidal, for example, is currently offering a growing library of MQA audio files.

Design & Build Quality

Like most of the Pro-Ject Box designs, the Pre Box S2 Digital is tiny! It is 4” wide, 4” deep, and only around 1.25” tall. That is small enough to easily fit in a messenger bag. It is housed in a very nicely finished all aluminum box. Like most of the Box Designs, you get a choice of silver or black.

The front panel has a full-sized headphone jack on one end and a small, but great feeling volume knob on the other end. When connected via USB, you can even control them while streaming music from your computer.

With its very small footprint, the Pre Box S2 Digital will probably find its way into many different listening situations. It can be at home on your desktop either as a headphone amp, or DAC for your computer speakers or both.

At the other end of the spectrum, it can hide out anywhere in your audio rack as a full-scale MQA capable DAC.

Finally, since it can even be powered off the USB input, you can use it on the go with a laptop. We popped the cover off to take a peek inside and found it to be totally stuffed with components. Upon closer examination, you’ll see that it’s a completely dual mono design, with each channel of the signal path mirrored. Pretty impressive for a $399 box!

Pro-Ject opted for the ESS Sabre ESS9038 dual DAC in the Pre Box S2 Digital -- the highest level DAC they have ever used. These dual DACs are capable of up to 32-bit PCM 768kHz and DSD512.

It’s important to point out that MQA unfolding and the higher resolution digital rates are only available on the USB input. The optical and coax digital inputs do not do MQA, but still go up to a very respectable 24/192. Pro-Ject made the decision to limit these two to keep the price down. If they made it available on all inputs, we would expect it to cost around twice the price. Most people are going to be using the desktop or laptop version of Tidal to play back MQA files, and the USB connection is best suited for that application.

Pro-Ject also spent a lot of time developing the clock used in the Pre Box S2 Digital. While digital audio can be great, jitter is one downside that we see often. If the digital signals are not put back together with the same timing as the original recording, the music seems to lack emotion, no matter how clear it may sound. The Pre Box S2 Digital has one of the lowest jitter rates we have ever seen, far surpassing some much more expensive units.

While it would have been easy for Pro-Ject to skimp on components, especially considering how inexpensive this unit is, they instead opted for some very high-end parts. It is quite unusual to see organic polymer capacitors and thin film miniMELF resistors in the power supply inside a box selling for only $399! Pro-Ject even used a 4 layer gold plated circuit board with extra shielding.

Since Pro-Ject felt this unit would mainly be used in USB mode, they also spent a lot of R&D time coming up with a way to reduce all of the noise that is present on a typical computer USB connection. Many components use passive filtering, but Pro-Ject used a special combination of passive and active filtering which brought the noise levels to below -130db. This is a ridiculously low number! All of this translates into great sound with a super low noise floor. When listening to this unit, you never get any trace of background noise.

In a trend we are starting to see on some other DAC’s, the Pre Box S2 Digital also has some filter options that allow you to shape the sound. Like most we have tested, these are subtle and recording dependent, but can make a bright or edgy recording sound better. There are 7 choices that you can easily flip through.

The output of the analog jacks is right around 2 volts, so you can use this box as an audio DAC by just setting its output to 0, which is full gain on this unit. If you have a fairly sensitive power amplifier, it will even make a great digital preamp with its three inputs.

The headphone amp is another ESS design and it can support up to 600-ohm headphones.

Finally, for you Roon fanatics out there, the Pre Box S2 Digital is also Roon capable.

Setup

We set up the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital with a Windows 10, Windows 7, and Apple MacBook Pro.

We’ll start by talking about the PC setup, so you Mac users can jump ahead to the next paragraph.

If you are Windows-based, you will need to do a few things first if you want your Pre Box S2 Digital to work properly. We recommend that you skip the CD that comes with the unit and instead go straight to the Pro-Ject Audio website. From there, navigate to the product page for the Pre Box S2 Digital. You’ll have to enter in your serial number to be able to download the latest software and installing it takes a little time. You’ll have to confirm steps a few times to complete the process, so you can’t just set it to install and forget it, unfortunately. If you had already powered on your S2, you’ll also need to cycle power.

To take full advantage of the Pre Box S2 Digital, you will need a Tidal account. The web-based app will not let you do MQA, so you will need to download the full program from their site. You’ll get the best sound out of MQA if you let the unit do the unfolding, so there is another step inside Tidal you need to do. Then, there are a couple of more steps.

First, using the desktop app, click on the music quality button at the bottom, which will be labeled Standard, High, or HIFI. (For Mac users this is under settings in the menu bar) This will bring up a window where you will choose the S2 for the sound output and click on Master which will force Tidal to give you the best audio possible, no matter the coding. You’ll then want to hover your mouse over the words “S2 Output” until a settings icon pops up on the left end. Click on this and you will have three choices: Use Exclusive Mode, Force Volume, and Pass Thru MQA. Be sure to check all three boxes.

Once you have set all of this up correctly, the S2’s display will light up showing MQA when you are playing that type of file, and you’ll have a little blue light to indicate it is doing the unfolding. You’ll also see the bit rate of the file in the lower part of the display.

Performance

We tested the unit with a few different headphones including the Grado RS2, AudioQuest Night Owl, and Focal Elear. In our testing, every single artist that we searched for (mostly classic rock, we must admit) had albums available that were done in MQA as well as the same identical album without MQA.

Our search included Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Yes, Diana Krall, Tina Turner, The Doors, Van Halen, Chicago, America, Steely Dan, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald, and I am sure we forgot a few as we gave this unit a long listen! For all of these artists, there are one or more MQA albums to play around with.

As with many new technologies, there are two camps in the audio world regarding MQA. Some like it and some do not. We think you should listen and form your own opinion. MQA allows a higher bitrate file to be streamed than we have ever seen in the past. In some cases, we were able to listen to 192k files. One thing we did notice is that sometimes there seems to be “creative re-mixing” when the file gets converted to MQA. We noticed some instruments moved from their original location and on a couple of tracks a vocal passage that was originally in the far left, got moved to the far right. Interestingly enough, it seemed like the ones that were altered did not sound as good to us as the non-MQA file. When you do these comparisons yourself, be sure to also match the volume, as MQA is normally around 6-8 dB louder than the normal file.

All of that being said, we found some shining examples of MQA during our search that really show off its advantages in a big way. A few real winners include:

Doors, “Riders on the Storm”

Yes, “Mood for a Day” (off the album Fragile)

Diana Krall, “Like Someone in Love” (off the album, Turn Up the Quiet)

The improvement in the subtle nuances of the music, including extra warmth and a much larger soundstage, was really apparent in these cuts. Plus they all had what we felt to be closer to an analog sound. This tells us that the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital has one heck of a DAC in it.

The general presentation of the Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital is very neutral with just a slight hint of lean -- but that is ever so slight. We listened to it for over 4 hours straight using both MQA and non-MQA and never had any sense of listening fatigue at all, which is a great sign. It truly is a very musical unit. When you have deep bass tracks they hit with a ton of impact and a clarity to the bass that we have never heard on a $400 DAC. Pro-ject’s circuitry to reduce jitter also works very well as we found ourselves tapping our toes on a lot of rhythmic tracks.

Next, we decided to compare the Pre Box S2 Digital against the Dragonfly Red, which can also do MQA. If you decide to do some comparing, make sure that you’re using the exact same recording. Some albums will have special remixed editions, so be sure the MQA and non-MQA come from the same album. While the Dragonfly Red is an absolutely amazing unit for $200, we definitely heard more subtle nuances and a bigger soundstage using the Pre Box S2 Digital. In our opinion, it’s well worth the extra $200.

Before we touch on this next observation, it’s time for an Audio Advice public service announcement. We are big believers in saving your ears. Your hearing is very important and trust our veterans when we say that you will still want to enjoy great audio well into retirement!

With that said, there are some of you out there that like to listen at high volume levels. For some of you, the Pre Box S2 Digital may not satisfy your demands, particularly if you are using headphones that are hard to drive. Using the Focal Elear, for example, we found a comfortable listening volume 2 clicks under full volume, but we recognize that this might not be loud enough for some of you. This is one area where the Dragonfly Red outmatches the Pre Box S2 Digital. It’s able to drive even the most inefficient headphones at a much higher level.

In summary, we have yet to hear anything that sounds as good as this little box does for $400 -- and it can handle MQA!

We know that some of you are going to ask how it compares to the Chord Mojo. At $579 we feel the Mojo has better pacing and a more effortless sound. The Mojo also has more output to drive a power amp directly and a more powerful headphone stage. To achieve that goal like never before, Mark Levinson engineers scoured company archives, ultimately developing a circuit-design philosophy called Pure Path. On a conceptual level, its hallmark principles include a discrete, direct-coupled, fully balanced, dual-monaural signal path that delivers unrestricted, uncompromised sonic purity. Far from merely arranging high quality components in an intelligent manner, Pure Path is the meeting of science and art: Mark Levinson engineers are tasked to create the best possible measured AND subjective performance. To quote Albert Einstein: “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Pure Path highlights in the No. 523 include Folded Cascodes, an R-2R Ladder volume control, the class-A Pure Phono stage, and class-A Main Drive Headphone amplifier output.

Analog Mastery
Mark Levinson components are designed around a Pure Path amplifier circuit concept that makes heavy use of a circuit design element called a cascode. Originally created for improving the bandwidth of vacuum tube circuits in radios, Mark Levinson engineers deploy cascodes in Pure Path circuit designs to both improve bandwidth and enhance linearity. A cascode combines two transistors so that they operate as a single composite device that functions like a single transistor, using the wanted characteristics of each component transistor, and rejecting the unwanted characteristics.

Mark Levinson engineers began their design of the preamp gain stage with pairs of JFETs (junction field-effect transistors), chosen for their low noise and high gain. JFETs achieve these characteristics in part by being large, and with their large size comes nonlinear gain – or distortion. To mitigate this, BJTs (bipolar junction transistors) were added to the circuit. The BJTs exhibit very low input impedance and very high output impedance, which translates to excellent bandwidth and linearity. By creating a cascode of the JFETs and BJTs, they created a design with the best characteristics of both sets of devices. Engineers than connected the output of the cascode to another transistor of the opposite “gender." Current flows through it in the opposite direction to “turn around" the direction of the signal current. This special connection is called a Folded Cascode and it is a hallmark of the Pure Path circuit: high gain with low noise, wide bandwidth, and excellent linearity.

Superior Volume Control
The basis of many volume controls is the venerable analog potentiometer – a device with a number of performance drawbacks. The mechanical connection wears out, creating scratching or crackling noises; it is nearly impossible to manufacture an identically performing pair, and mismatches in a stereo pair can cause level imbalances between the two channels; and due to their varied reaction to parasitic capacitances at different volume settings, the sound changes depending on where the volume is set. Rather than attempting to improve upon this flawed design, Mark Levinson engineers abandoned it. Instead, they employed a complex circuit architecture called an R-2R Ladder.

In the R-2R Ladder, a string of resistors, all with identical resistance (R), form the side of the ladder, with another set of resistors forming the rungs, all identically with double the resistance (2R). This unique circuit takes whatever current appears at its input and successively divides it in half at each “rung" of the ladder. Different combinations of “rung" currents can then be selected and added together, precisely delivering nearly any output current, and thereby, volume setting. An R-2R Ladder is a highly accurate device. The currents through the rungs are determined by fixed resistors, capable of very tight tolerances, able to be closely matched to one another in value. Analog switches “steer" the currents, are precision devices, and have no mechanical contacts to wear out. In short, the R-2R Ladder solves all the problems inherent to potentiometer-based volume controls. That's why it is a cornerstone of Mark Levinson Pure Path design philosophy.

Military Grade Components
All Mark Levinson equipment employs electronic components carefully chosen for their specific task. Gain-stage JFET pairs have high gain, low noise, low distortion, and because they are encapsulated in the same package, the two devices operate under nearly identical conditions. Capacitors used in critical filtering locations are film types, noted for their consistent performance regardless of temperature and frequency. Finally, resistors in critical gain-setting and feedback locations use tantalum nitride thin-film elements. An extremely costly material, tantalum nitride typically finds use in sensitive military equipment because it is unusually stable with respect to temperature, exhibits very low noise, and is unaffected by magnetic fields. In fine audio equipment, those characteristics make the sound even more revealing and effortless, free of the low-level nonlinearities caused by lesser resistive materials as they heat and cool under dynamic conditions. Housed in an aircraft-grade 6063-T5 extruded aluminum chassis, the No. 523 features extremely high build precision, to exceedingly low tolerances.

Pure Phono
Preamplifying from turntable to line level can a difficult task, and it is an area where some equipment makers skimp on components and design. The No. 526 and No. 523 preamplifiers introduce a new Mark Levinson phono stage, Pure Phono, itself following Pure Path design principles including discrete design, free of op amps. The Pure Phono stage operates exclusively in class A throughout, employing tantalum nitride thin-film resistors polypropylene capacitors with punishingly low tolerances.

The Pure Phono stage also contains physically separated channels and balanced inputs for purity. The Pure Phono stage offers a fixed-gain MM section with five capacitive cartridge-loading settings, and an MC section with three gain settings and 10 resistive cartridge-loading settings. And an ultrasonic filter intelligently compensates for rumble and warping.

Completing the Signal Path
The No. 523 offers five line-level analog inputs: two balanced (XLR), three single-ended (RCA), in addition to the Pure Phono (RCA with grounding pin) input. The preamplifier delivers its signal to balanced (XLR) and single-ended (RCA) stereo outputs, as well as a 1/4-inch (6.3mm) Main Drive Headphone output integrated into the front panel metalwork – a first for Mark Levinson.

The Main Drive Headphone amplifier circuit drives up to 32-ohm headphones in class A by employing the main output circuit rather than a secondary signal path: a perfect example of reducing clutter in the circuit design.

A selectable fourth-order, 80 Hz high-pass filter enables seamless integration of a single or dual subwoofers for full-range performance with a wide range of loudspeaker setups.

The Mark Levinson Precision Link DAC
First introduced in the multi-award-winning, critically acclaimed No. 585 Integrated Amplifier, the Mark Levinson Precision Link DAC transforms digital data streams into analog audio art. Like every other element of a Mark Levinson component, it combines unique Pure Path engineering design approaches with painstakingly selected components to deliver impeccable performance than can be appreciated both on the test bench and in the listening room.

The converter chip in the Mark Levinson Precision Link DAC comes from ESS Technologies, a company known for jitter-elimination circuitry. Jitter – inaccuracies in the timing of samples arriving to the converter – causes distortion. The ESS converter resynchronizes incoming data to its own extraordinarily stable clock. Combined with its 32-bit resolution, the low-jitter stream reduces distortion and noise, allowing remarkable retrieval of ambient detail that other DACs simply miss.

The Precision Link DAC operates the converter's outputs in current mode, where they are fed into a fully balanced current-to-voltage (I/V) converter that provides the exact signal level desired. Maintaining near-zero voltage keeps the current sources virtually immune to nonlinearity, maximizing bandwidth and minimizing distortion. Common-mode noise and distortion are cancelled in this mirror-imaged, differential configuration, resulting in a pristine signal with a vanishingly low noise floor. Also contributing to the Mark Levinson Precision Link DAC's low noise floor is its unique power supply configuration: five independent power supplies operate the converter chip alone, and individual linear power supplies for the left and right channels power the discrete I/V and antialiasing filter circuits.

Personalized Performance
The Precision Link DAC performs oversampling and digital filtering of digital audio data. This process increases the effective sample rate by filling in additional data points between the actual data present, which in turn reduces the demands on the low-pass (antialiasing) filter required on the analog output of the converter.

An Array of Pure Path Digital Inputs
The No. 526 offers six digital inputs for system flexibility. One Balanced AES/EBU (XLR) input and two Coaxial (RCA) inputs use high-speed differential receivers to reject noise and provide clean digital waveforms to the Cirrus Logic digital audio receiver chip. Two additional Optical (Toslink) receivers drive the digital audio receiver directly. For direct connection to a computer, the No. 526 also offers an asynchronous USB Type B input built around a CMedia USB audio processor chip. Using the high-speed USB 2.0 standard, the CMedia chip reliably and accurately receives audio data over USB in PCM format at up to 32-bit, 192 kHz; or in native DSD format at up to double speed (5.6 MHz). The CMedia chip transfers USB data asynchronously: it gets as much data as possible as and when it is available, rather than transferring the data in sync with the music playback, which reduces demands on the computer and instead allows the processor chip to precisely control the flow of data to the digital-to-analog converter.

HARMAN Clari-Fi Music Restoration Technology
HARMAN Clari-Fi music restoration technology analyzes compressed digital audio files during playback, in real time, and reconstructs much of what was lost in the compression process. The complex Clari-Fi processing algorithm is implemented on a powerful Analog Devices SHARC DSP (digital signal processor). Unlike simple equalization, Clari-Fi continuously and automatically adapts the amount of reconstruction it performs to the degree to which an audio file has been compressed. The No. 526 offers an Intensity control, enabling fine adjustment of the amount of reconstruction applied to the signal – or bypass if preferred.

System-integration connectivity includes Ethernet/IP control, RS-232, USB for monitoring and configuration via web page, plus 12V triggers and an IR input. An included machined metal remote delivers the robust feel and precise control befitting of a component of the preamplifier's caliber.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0572/3281/8260/files/httpswww.audioadvice.compubmediacatalogproductmamarkl-no526.jpg?v=1718142595
pre-box-ds2-digital
Pro-Ject PREBOXDS2-BLK Pre Box DS2 Digital Preamplifier

Phono stage (MM/MC), Line In on board

5 digital Inputs: 1x USB, 2x optical, 1x coax, 1x Bluetooth (aptX)

DSD64, DSD128 & DSD256 (DSD over PCM)

Up to 24bit/192kHz for optical & coax inputs

5 selectable digital filter characteristics

3 selectable sound modes

Headphone output on the front (6.3mm)

High-end ultra-low phase oscillator with superior noise rejection

RCA line-level solid-state analog output stage

Ultra linear & ultra-low-noise circuitry

Full alu/metal sandwich casing in silver or black

Company & Product Overview

The year was 1946 when Frank McIntosh hired Gordon Gow to work on a special project for him. It lets you connect all of your dedicated audio-only gear to your great McIntosh C49 preamp, then connect up your surround sound processor or receiver’s front channel outputs to the C49. This enables you to combine a dedicated two-channel system and a home theater setup with zero compromises to the sound of your two-channel gear.

McIntosh will let the adjuster or purist in you have your cake and eat it too, with their tone and balance control circuitry. You’ll be able to adjust bass, treble, and balance or if you wish, completely disable those circuits for a pure signal path. If you were to pull out the boards for the C49, you would notice very little wiring at all. The signal switching all takes place right at the connectors through a special control circuit that talks to the front panel. The C49 also uses McIntosh’s best volume control design. This uses optoelectronic circuitry that gives you the ability to fine-tune the volume in minute steps. No signal passes through the volume knob assuring years of noise-free service. But, unlike some preamps where you have to keep spinning the volume knob for several rotations to get things loud, the C49 senses when you are moving the knob faster, ramping the volume up quickly. There are some percussive sounds that are recorded with a lot of decay added and we could hear every bit of this as the sound slowly faded away in a super effortless fashion. The dynamics of the percussion and deep bass were also very impressive to our ears.

We moved on to "Man in the Long Black Coat" from Bob Dylan. At the beginning of the track, there are guitars in the left and right channels and a great system will place these guitars a little bit outside the main speakers. We heard this exact effect with the McIntosh C49, plus the acoustic energy coming off the guitars had zero sense of strain. A few more seconds into this track brings on some rich harmonica sounds. Here, the warmth and effortlessness this preamp lets through just drew you into the music.

Our last cut was "Billy Jean" from Between the Bars. It’s slightly bigger than the previous A8, coming in around 17 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 4.6 inches tall. It also steps things up with a finely crafted, CNC-machined aluminum chassis, complete with metal fins on the sides that help with passive cooling. It just feels more solid, too, weighing in at almost 16 pounds compared to the A8’s 11. We personally like the look of the new fins—they give it a cool, modern look. But if you were a fan of the A8's simple black box vibe, this new design might take some getting used to.

Now, looking at the front panel, you'll spot some more upgrades. First off, there’s a dedicated power button on the left side now—probably because the new volume knob has been revamped with a built-in screen! You don’t see this feature on other products too often, and Eversolo's version is super cool. The circular screen on the knob can display the volume or even album artwork and can be customized to different themes. Of course, this feature is just for looks and won’t improve your sound, but it definitely makes the A10 easier to use and gives it a sleek, futuristic vibe. Plus, the bright and gorgeous screen has added a half inch and is updated to a 6.5” touchscreen. In our full review of other Eversolo units, we raved about how responsive and detailed the screens are, and the A10 is no exception—it’s super fast and smooth to navigate.

You can control everything—your music, streaming services, settings, and more—right from the front touchscreen or through their well-organized and fast app. You can also set favorites, customize the home screen, and tweak how you want album art to appear while your music plays. Eversolo really nailed it with these screens, and we can’t stress that enough. With the large center touchscreen paired with the new screen on the volume knob, you’ll have all the info you need right at a glance!

One really unique feature is the ability to cast the screen from your Eversolo to your phone. The screencast feature pulls up a direct screencast of what is on your screen and is completely interactive. What we found the screencast most useful for was the third-party apps. Since the third-party apps are not accessible on the Eversolo phone app, you can easily mirror the screen, open third-party apps, and have complete control of your music that way. It’s a clever workaround that seems to work rather well.

The Eversolo app itself is also blazing fast and has all the features you should need. It’s easy to navigate, allows you to sign in and stream your music from your favorite music platform right in the app, and even has a universal music search feature to find songs across all of your streaming services. We used the app almost exclusively when we were testing all the Eversolo units, as it just seemed to be the easiest way to navigate and control everything. However, Eversolo does include a new refined remote that feels and looks pretty nice if you prefer to control it that way instead of always relying on your phone.

When you check out the back of the A10, it looks pretty similar to the A8. You still get all the essentials—an ethernet port, balanced XLR inputs, RCA inputs, HDMI ARC, 2 coax inputs, 1 USB-B input, 2 USB-A’s, and 2 toslink inputs. For outputs, you’ve got balanced XLRs, RCAs, 1 coax, 1 Toslink, and 1 USB-A port. You’ll also have trigger in and out ports and a new SFP fiber port, allowing you to connect to your network via fiber when you purchase an additional SFP module. This is typically seen in high-end gear and allows you to have cleaner audio without an electrical connection between the network switch and the device itself. But the upgrade that we were excited to see was the addition of 2 dedicated subwoofer outs! This lets you hook up and fine-tune two subs directly through the A10 interface or app, delivering deep, balanced bass for your stereo or home theater setup. You have the ability to set sub level, crossover frequency and polarity for the subs which applies to both of them. However, you can then choose whether you want Stereo mode where it will crossover one sub with your left speaker and one with your right. You’ll see many two channel purists do this when they have their subs right next to their left and right speakers. If you have one sub or two subs that are in the corners of your room or other locations, you will instead choose Mixer mode which will mix the right and left to give you the same feed to both subs. We tested this in our system with two KEF subs and it worked flawlessly.

In addition to the dual sub capability, the A10 also comes with its own room correction. Almost any room will have frequency peaks due to its shape and how the sound waves interact, which can really affect how your music sounds. That’s why we love systems that come with automated room correction. You usually see this in high-performance home theater gear, but Eversolo has brought Room Correction Technology to the A10, allowing it to automatically adjust the sound to reduce unwanted peaks and nulls created by the room. Using the included mic (or your own), you can easily run the correction, and it’ll do all the work for you. We tested it and found it definitely improved the sound in less than perfect rooms. Using a phone, you can get a pretty good correction curve, but using a dedicated mic gets you even better results. It is not as powerful as something like Dirac Live with Bass Control that you see on higher-end steamer units like the NAD M66, but it works well and can easily be turned on and off. There are some tweaks you can do to the automated correction that we cover in our Tips and Tricks.

For those who want to fine-tune things manually instead of relying on auto adjustments, the A10 still gives you full control with a parametric EQ. You can target specific frequencies, like 37Hz or 121Hz, and adjust how steep or wide the correction is. Plus, you get access to FIR filters, high-pass and low-pass filters, bass boost, a compressor, and delay control—so you can geek out as much as you want!

The HDMI arc connection allows you to connect this right to your TV system too! We want to note here that there is no HDMI I2S like there was on the A8 and no HDMI DSD/Audio output port. However, Eversolo concluded that for the vast majority of folks, these would have been unused features that would add to the cost of the device.

Inside the A10, the impressive features continue. First off, Eversolo has designed the interior to separate noise and interference from different boards and has even added shielding on the front panel to ensure the audio signal remains pure and undisturbed. Plus, it has dual independent linear power supplies. This configuration consists of a toroidal transformer and a low-noise linear power supply to separate the digital system from the analog audio circuits, which helps eliminate interference and distortion. Anyone who’s into audio knows that a good power supply can make a huge difference—better ones generate less noise and give stronger support to all the components.

The DAC inside is the extremely powerful ES9039PRO instead of the two AKM DACs found in the A8. We were big fans of that “velvet sound” that came from the A8, so we were a little surprised to see them change it up. However, when you look up the raw parts cost, the new ESS Sabre DAC comes in at almost twice the price. But what really matters is how it sounds, which we will get to shortly. And keep in mind that if you already have a better DAC without streaming capabilities, you can still attach the A10 with any of it’s digital outs. In fact, they’ve even incorporated an advanced electrical isolation circuit to reduce interference from high-noise power sources and grounding loop issues when you connect up an external DAC or USB device. The iCoupler technology inside transmits the clock signal and data to the isolated side in the correct time order and then resynchronizes them to maintain consistency. This may sound a bit technical, but all you really need to know is that any USB connection will be high quality with reduced jitter and maintain great signal accuracy.

The A10 supports high-res audio up to 32-bit PCM at 768 kHz and DSD512. Plus, it supports nearly all the file formats you should need and gives you access to popular streaming platforms like Qobuz, Deezer, Tidal, Amazon Music, and Apple Music. You can also use Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect, and it will soon be Roon Ready. It also runs on Eversolo's patented EOS operating system (Eversolo Original Sampling-rate Audio Engine) that bypasses Android’s SRC limitations to ensure the original sample rate output from any of the music apps for perfectly accurate playback.

The A10 is also capable of Bluetooth 5.0, can rip and play CDs using an external CD drive, play music from a USB drive, and has 64GB of internal storage. You can easily rip CDs and store them directly on the unit, and if you wish to have more storage, you can install SSDs underneath the unit to have up to 4TB of total storage. You can also use this unit as a server to access all your files and play anywhere in your home.

The A10 also gets a cool upgrade in the clock department with custom-developed temperature control technology for the OCXO clock system. OCXO stands for Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator, and it keeps the temperature constant and stable regardless of external temperature changes. It’s considered the best-performing quartz crystal oscillator out there. Having a stable temperature helps eliminate any frequency fluctuations for less noise and low jitter. This is a step up from the clocks in their previous products, and these ones even undergo a rigorous testing process from Eversolo to be sure they perform to their standards.

But why does this even matter? Because even the smallest drift in a clock signal can cause tiny timing errors between samples, which impacts the audio quality. The fully balanced preamp in the A10 is well-made with precision resistors and relays to ensure precise volume control, allowing you to use it as a true analog preamp in your system.

Okay, so we’ve gone over most of the major features and technology of the new A10. Now, let’s talk about performance.

We tested the A10 with Parasound JC1 plus monoblock amps with KEF Reference 1 Meta bookshelves and KEF R11 Meta towers. This setup is extremely revealing and previously had an expensive streamer connected to it. So, it allowed us to evaluate the A10 sonically, particularly compared to a more expensive streamer solution. From a pure specification standpoint, you’d expect the A10 to shine, and it sure does. We set it up, ran room calibration, and then tweaked it until we felt it was really dialed in. Then, we ran a host of listening tests. We have to say, this A10 is incredible.

Listening to tracks from different genres of music, like The Birth of a Band by Quincy Jones and Starboy by The Weeknd, proved that the A10 has some serious chops. No matter what we played, the A10 just sounded phenomenal and proved that the ESS Dac inside was musical and enjoyable to listen to all day long. We could go on and on, but in short, the A10 rocks. If you have the budget and are looking for a streamer/preamp, you will not be disappointed.

For fun, we also tested the A10 with a pair of nice powered bookshelf speakers to simulate a situation where you have a limited budget and want to put the vast majority into this great streamer/preamp and look to upgrade to better amps and speakers later. As you might expect, the A10 made these speakers come alive in a way we had not previously heard. So we believe the A10 could turn out to be not only a great steamer upgrade for people but also the start of a much better system over time. But if you want a deeper dive, you can check out our article at the link in the description.

Plus, if you want to pair up a matching amp, the Amp-F10 will be coming very soon, which will be the perfect match aesthetically. This is a completely redesigned amp from their previous Amp-F2, which was built from the ground up by Eversolo themselves. It will feature 200W per channel and up to 650 watts in bridged mode. We will have one in very soon for a review to put it to the test and let you know how it performs, so make sure you’re subscribed and have the notification bell turned on so you don’t miss that video when it drops.

Many Eversolo fans are already sold on Eversolo and likely want to know how we feel the A10 stacks up against the A6, A6 Master, and A8. First of all, if you are using it as a streamer only without leveraging the DAC and pre-amp, it's likely not worth the upgrade. However, if you are really into great sound and have the budget, we do believe this is a worthy upgrade. You get upgraded clocks, power supply, dual subs, and room correction, along with overall sonic improvement.

We’re here to help!

If you have further questions, contact our experts via chat, phone, or email. They have nicknamed it The Conductor because its job is to control the power amplifier with a signal that is as true to the music as possible. In their view, the preamplifier is the most critical component in a great sounding system, and it is also the hardest to get right. The very low amplitude signals coming from the source are easily corrupted, so in-depth technical know-how and clever engineering are needed to make sure the signal stays the same all the way through the preamplifier. With the P30A Hegel has deployed all their skills in doing just that.

First, Hegel use single pair FET transistors that have no higher order harmonic distortion. Within any batch of transistors, there will always be slight measurement variations. This might be within the bounds of what is considered normal deviations, but for sensitive electronics like this, that simply isn't good enough. Therefore, Hegel's founder and chief engineer Bent measures and carefully matches those transistors that have the exact same values. Having perfectly matched transistors is of paramount importance to the performance of the preamplifier, and it makes the P30A sound very smooth and natural, without compromising on the details. Furthermore, the internal layout is designed in a way that makes the signal paths within the preamplifier as short as possible. This reduces the possibility of distortion coming from electrical interference. To further reduce distortion, they also minimize the number of electrical components the signal passes through. In the P30A the music signal only passes through two transistors and an ultra-low noise volume attenuator. The P30A also uses Hegel's patented SoundEngine technology. This actively monitors the music signal for corruptions and corrects for intermodulation distortion using a feed forward design. SoundEngine effectively removes distortion in real time as the signal is amplified.

All these steps make for a preamplifier that is very quiet and handles the sensitive low amplitude music signal as delicately as possible. Even so, distortion of the signal can still happen, but the P30A has one more feature that takes care of this. The P30A is fully balanced all the way through. This means you have two separate amplifiers, volume controls, and SoundEngine modules per channel. With this design, almost all leftover distortion is canceled out, and what you are left with is a signal that is as close to the original source material as possible.

The P30A offers a wide array of inputs and outputs. It features 2 balanced (XLR) and 3 unbalanced (RCA) inputs and a fixed level Home Theatre input that allows you to integrate it into a Home Theatre system. This input can also be configured to act as a normal input. On the other end you have one balanced (XLR) and two unbalanced (RCA) variable outputs that are all active, allowing you to connect several devices at the same time. One of the unbalanced RCA outputs can even be configured to be a fixed volume output. The P30A also has a 3,5 mm IR-direct input and a 12V trigger output connector. When you add it all up you get a highly versatile, extremely quiet, and natural sounding preamplifier that can be the heart of any high-end audio system. This type of interference - known as jitter - is caused by minimal timing errors, which still manage to exert a harmful influence on the sound experience unless they are removed before the conversion into analogue signals.

The De-Jitter Masterclock was developed in Herford, Germany, and constitutes a consistent audiophile response to jitter: in a multi-stage process the incoming signals are examined, and even the largest of jitter artefacts are removed. In the first stage the incoming signal delivers a raw clock pulse which is analysed very closely by micro-processors: the signal is then switched to the Masterclock - but only if its frequency and stability fulfil strict minimum criteria. If those criteria are not met, the signals are cleaned again through a further PLL stage in a specially constructed second jitterbug; this process reduces the residual jitter by a factor of 4.

Signals which fulfil the purity requirements are de-coupled completely from the input jitter by switching to the Masterclock. The incoming signals are further processed by precision oscillators with the best available femto-clock accuracy. Joint processing of PCM and DSD files in a single converter is one such a source of interference: supposedly insignificant, but in fact having a crucial influence on the sound. It was their insistence on eliminating this particular influence that caused them to develop the unique T+A Path Separation Technology: both PCM and DSD have their own converter, specifically tailored to their requirements. These converters exclude adverse sound influences as well as exploiting the potential of each format to the full. For PCM signals they use a quadruple converter, whereas DSD files are processed using the T+A True 1-bit converter, which is unique in the world.

Converters & Filters

The T+A True 1-bit converter is unique, as it forms a break with a paradigm: conventional converters process DSD signals by converting them into PCM, and reproducing them using the PCM mode. But this conversion contradicts T+A's principles, and caused them to develop the True 1-bit converter, which processes DSD files in their native form, without detrimental conversion processes, and reproduces them in totally pure form as genuine 1 Bit Stream.

T+A's PCM Quadruple Converter features a double symmetrical circuit design comprising eight 32-bit Burr-Brown converters, thereby providing above-average compensation for non-linearities in the sound, and reduces the already minimal background noise by a further 6 dB. This sophistication results in amazing dynamism and linearity combined with an equally amazing freedom from distortion. Although we believe in unadulterated music reproduction, the Bezier filters - another in-house development - in the quadruple converter can be exploited by the listener to fine-tune the sound characteristics to their individual taste. The application of polynomials results in perfect timing behaviour for each of the six available filters, two of which are NOS stages.

Galvanic Separation DASS

Analog sound quality is crucially determined by consistent separation between the digital and analogue sections. All power control, data ports, and external control connections are located in the C12000 Controller. Dual isolated power supplies drive the left and right channels, while a dual microprocessor gives robustness to the control system. The C12000 Preamplifier houses the audio connections and circuitry. Inside each, the left and right channels are electrically and mechanically isolated from each other to allow true dual mono operation – resulting in the ultimate stereo separation and sonic purity. The two units are connected together via a pair of specially designed, high performance umbilical cables that are shielded to prevent outside noise from leaking into the audio signal. Although they are two separate units, when connected they act as one and are easy to control and operate from the included remote control or the C12000 Controller front panel.

A total of 12 analog inputs1 are located in the C12000 Preamplifier module: six balanced, four unbalanced, and two unbalanced phono inputs. The phono inputs are no longer set up as dedicated for Moving Coil or Moving Magnet cartridges; instead, both are configurable as either Moving Coil or Moving Magnet with adjustable Capacitance and Resistance Loading, along with adjustable Gain in 6dB steps from 40dB to 64dB. The C12000 Preamplifier module offers both vacuum tube and solid state output, allowing you to decide which to use based on the music being played, the audio components in the rest of your home audio system, and your sound preferences. All outputs are driven by discrete amplifiers. For vacuum tube output, six tubes or valves power the high-level preamplifier section with two 12AT7 tubes and one 12AX7A tube assigned to each the left and right channel. It combines network streaming, digital conversion, preamplification, and a 100-watt-per-channel power amplifier into one component. It's a great solution if you want a compact McIntosh system and don't need to choose your own power amplifier.

The other route is a traditional component system. A DS200 Streaming DAC can feed a separate preamp such as a C49, C55, or tube-driven C2800, which then feeds the power amplifier of your choice. That gives you a lot more flexibility, but now you're dealing with multiple chassis, additional cables, another power cord, and more equipment just to get streaming into the system. The DS200 itself is primarily a digital product, with eight digital inputs and no analog preamplifier section.

The CS7500 lands directly between those two approaches.

You get streaming, digital conversion, analog preamplification, phono, TV integration, headphone listening, and system control in one component, but the power amplifier remains separate. For someone building a new two-channel McIntosh system, that combination makes a lot of sense.

McIntosh CS7500 DAC and High-Resolution Audio

Digital conversion is handled by an 8-channel, 32-bit DAC operating in McIntosh's Quad Balanced configuration. The CS7500 itself is rated at just 0.005% total harmonic distortion, with a 100dB signal-to-noise ratio on its high-level inputs.

The Quad Balanced design uses multiple DAC channels for each stereo channel rather than relying on one converter channel per side. The goal is greater dynamic range with lower noise and distortion, and it's an architecture McIntosh also uses in products like the DS200 and its DA2 digital module.

For high-resolution files, USB supports PCM along with DSD512 and DXD up to 384kHz, while the coaxial and optical inputs support up to 24-bit/192kHz. The proprietary MCT connection can also carry CD audio and DSD64 from a compatible McIntosh SACD transport.

Streaming Without Learning Another Music App

The streaming platform is one of the biggest reasons to choose the CS7500. You get Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, Bluetooth, and Roon. The CS7500 is both Roon Ready and Roon Tested. Bluetooth 5.0 adds AAC, aptX HD, and aptX Adaptive support.

More importantly, McIntosh isn't forcing you into a proprietary music app for everyday listening. Open Qobuz, Spotify, or TIDAL, select the CS7500, and keep using the interface you already know.

And there is another small feature that becomes a pretty big deal in everyday use. When the streaming app supports volume control, it can control the CS7500's volume directly. You aren't stuck using your phone to choose music and then grabbing the McIntosh remote every time you want it louder or quieter.

That makes the CS7500 feel much more like an integrated streaming system than a conventional preamp with a streamer connected to one of its inputs.

A Fully Adjustable MM and MC Phono Stage

The CS7500 isn't only aimed at digital listeners. Its dedicated phono input can be configured for either moving magnet or moving coil cartridges, and McIntosh gives you control over capacitance, resistance, and gain so you can better match the phono stage to the cartridge you're using.

Gain is adjustable to 40, 46, 52, 58, or 64dB. That's a meaningful improvement in flexibility compared with the older C49, which used fixed 40dB moving magnet and 60dB moving coil gain settings.

That extra adjustment is especially useful with moving coil cartridges, where output levels and recommended loading can vary considerably from one cartridge to another.

Another feature analog listeners will appreciate is that analog sources can remain analog instead of being automatically converted to digital. That's unusual in an all-in-one streaming preamplifier and gives you the convenience of modern streaming without forcing your turntable or other analog sources through an A/D and D/A conversion process.

You still get traditional bass and treble controls when a recording needs a little help, and they can be bypassed when you don't want them in the signal path.

McIntosh CS7500 Inputs, Outputs, and HDMI ARC

Connectivity is extensive. After the CS7500 is first powered on, it stays available in Apple's "Set Up New AirPlay Speaker" Wi-Fi setup list for about 15 minutes. If that setup window closes before you're finished, go into Network Setup on the CS7500 and hold the input knob to make it available for setup again. There was a little warmth and extra body through the midrange, especially on Lucinda's voice, but it never came across as dark or overly soft. The bass had plenty of texture and definition, while cymbals and higher-frequency details sounded clean and natural without becoming sharp or fatiguing.

What I liked most was that there was plenty of detail to dig into, but the CS7500 never sounded analytical.
