These pieces now go for 10 to 50 times their original selling price even though they are 60+ years old! Even the Marantz gear from the 1970s is in high demand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe reason for this is the classic signature sound developed by Saul Marantz that made them big hits when they were first released. What is pretty neat about Marantz is that they have a group of engineers in Japan whose only job is to keep the best of Marantz having that same sonic signature. They are trained to recognize this sound and spend all of their time listening to new Marantz models to fine-tune the circuitry to meet that standard. These engineers are called Marantz Sound Masters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first two 30 pieces embodied all of this great heritage in an analog-only integrated amp and SACD player\/music streamer. The Model 40n has the same great cosmetic touches as the 30 models and actually gives us a few new features not found on the earlier units. The controls are on a smaller faceplate that appears to float on top of a carbon fiber-looking larger box. And we just love the classic Marantz portal right in the center that we first saw in the 1960 Model 9 tube power amp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was hard for us to tell any build quality change from the great feel of the 30 series components. This is pretty impressive too when you consider the combination of the 30 pieces is well over twice the price of the Model 40n.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou get the same very high-quality speaker binding posts on the rear that accommodate bare wire or a banana plug. The included remote is also nicely done with a bit of heft to it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Model 40n has that look that makes you just want to reach out and turn one of the knobs. Everything moves as smooth as silk with a wonderful fit and finish. It certainly embodies audio luxury! First, let's talk about the integrated amp section. If you know audio, you probably know an integrated amplifier is a preamp and power amp combined into one box. The preamp handles all of the controls, input switching, digital processing, and more, while the job of the power amp is to simply drive the speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe internal layout of the Model 40n is as equally impressive as the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/marantz\/marantz-model-30-integrated-amplifier\"\u003eModel 30 integrated amp\u003c\/a\u003e. The large transformer and power supply sit on the left side with massive heat sinks in the middle for the power amp section, which appears to have very short connections to the binding posts. All the critical low-level components are on the right side with some of them in a totally shielded box. We are seeing some brands just measure at 1K with high distortion, which is misleading in our opinion. And while it does not fully double down into 4 ohms like the Model 30 does, it does deliver 100 watts per channel into a 4-ohm load. Marantz uses a pretty big toroidal power transformer in the Model 40n, which accounts for its very stout weight of over 36 pounds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Model 40n uses the same type of Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules found in the bigger Model 30. These are fine-tuned to give you that classic warm Marantz sound that draws you deep into the essence of your favorite music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the analog side of things, there is a very good moving magnet phono preamp built-in. This trickles down from the phono preamp they created for the Model 30 and is more than just an afterthought. You can feel confident you are at about a $250 separate phono preamp level with the one they include. There are three line-level inputs labeled, CD, line, and recorder. Like its bigger brother, Marantz also gives you a record out. You may ask what that is all about. Well, there is a resurgence of people buying vintage cassette and reel-to-reel tape recorders and going back to making their own mixtapes. The tape out allows you to get the signal over to your tape device, which is pretty cool to see this nod to the vintage trend.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/wordpress2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/marantz_model40_specsblackback.jpg\" alt=\"Marantz Model40n - Back View\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were really happy to see the addition of a subwoofer out on the Model 40n, and they even give you variable crossovers every 10Hz from 40Hz to 120Hz, which is great. There is a connection set that puzzled us and that is a set of power amp inputs. These allow you to use the power amp only of the Model 40n, and this would be cool were there a set of preamp outs, but there are not any preamp outs. We feel like the more likely use case would be you would love your 40n but want a bit more power, which you could do if it had preamp outs. \u003cspan\u003eIn our mind, Marantz should have included preamp outputs instead of preamp inputs\u003c\/span\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe digital section has a Toslink and coax digital in. Another connector we think is really great to see is the HDMI Arc connection. This will let you connect your Arc capable TV to the Model 40n to send the audio from its internal apps or anything connected to it back to the Model 40n. The neat part about an HDMI Arc connection is that it takes over the volume\/mute and power controls, meaning your TV remote will operate the Model 40n and switch it to the HDMI Arc input when you turn on your TV. Most TVs made in the last 5 years have Arc features on board.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you have a USB drive full of music, you can connect it to the rear of the Model 40n too. There is a wired ethernet connection and wireless antennas. You can stream any Hi-Res music on your network right into the Model 40n. And like the Model 30 SACD streamer, Heos is on board too. Heos was developed by Marantz’s sister company, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/denon\"\u003eDenon\u003c\/a\u003e, and has evolved to be an excellent streaming platform. Heos gives you most of the popular streaming services. Heos used to get a bad rap, but it has greatly improved and worked solidly for us although we do recommend if you are going from Heos to Airplay that you stop the Heos app first to avoid any switching noise- we did encounter one. Integration between the app and the stick remote with the 40n was seamless which was kind of nice being able to just pick up the remote and pause or fine-tune the volume without having to open our smartphone. In addition, there is Airplay 2 plus Bluetooth 4.2. Those of you into voice control will be happy to know it works with Alexa, Google, and Siri too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_full\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/wordpress2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/model40_logo_desktop.jpg\" alt=\"Marantz Model40n Graphic\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe did wonder a bit why Marantz did not include Chromecast or Bluetooth Apt X HD, but it was likely a decision to keep the price down on this very high-value unit, plus Heos does give you almost every streaming service you would want with the exception of Qobuz, which they might add at some point. When you consider the way it is put together, how it sounds, and the features they even added to it like HDMI Arc and subwoofer out you do not even get on the two separate 30 series pieces, this unit offers just a ton of great stuff for its price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Marantz 40n was fun to set up. We love those heavy-duty binding posts! Getting it on the network was easier than most pieces of gear as we just looked at network devices, clicked on it and our iPhone loaded all the network credentials via Airplay. It might require using the Heos app for Android users. Just for grins, we have set up an area with a somewhat weak WiFi signal to see how well units do in this situation, as let's face it, not everyone has a hard-wired connection where they want to put the gear. Some other units have had streaming dropouts in this same position, but the large dual external WiFi antennas on the 40n did the trick as we never had any issues. We used Roon via Airplay and Tidal via Heos and both worked well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe expected we would get dynamic and well-controlled bass from the 40n based on the large power supply and we were not let down at all. Our reference tracks there came through quite well, although some larger amps we have tested including the Model 30 had even more impact and control as you might expect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 40n continues that classic Marantz warm sound as even when cranking things up, it still held together without a sense of strain. The soundstage was also very 3 dimensional. When we connected back up our reference \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/mcintosh\"\u003eMcIntosh\u003c\/a\u003e stack, it was obvious the Mc stack had far more warmth and inner detail, but when you consider the price of the 40n, it is extremely musical for what it costs and on the right recording was throwing out a huge soundstage with ease.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were driving some pretty sensitive speakers with the 40n during our tests so its power rating of 70 watts per channel never really came into play. Of course, you don’t get a CD player like you do with the 30 Series model, but you do gain HDMI Arc in the 40n, which is a great feature for those of you who want to use your two-channel stereo with your TV.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlus, you get that classic appearance we love about the 30 series, and the touch and feel of the controls is just first class. Finally, they have kept pretty much the same classic look since the very beginning.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eToday’s review is on a piece from McIntosh that is in a somewhat competitive and very popular category, an integrated amp.\u003c\/strong\u003e While McIntosh is mostly known for their separate preamps and monster power amplifiers, they do make a few all in one units that combine both the preamp and amplifier. \u003cstrong\u003eFor those of you new to the audio world, the preamp is your control center where all of your signal switching takes place and the low-level signals coming in get amplified or digital signals coming in get converted to analog.\u003c\/strong\u003e They are then sent over to the power amp which takes that signal and amplifies it tremendously to power your speakers. This display also becomes the way you set up inputs and make other adjustments. \u003cstrong\u003eThis layout also makes it really easy to understand how to use a McIntosh component. With just one quick look, anyone can figure out how to turn it on and get your favorite tunes going.\u003c\/strong\u003e And the great part is, you can dive deeper to set up some cool features should you wish to, but you don’t have to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe love the fact that even on their entry-level integrated amp, you get their iconic blue meters. As a matter of fact, \u003cstrong\u003ethe same person who made the transformers for this integrated amp might be making the transformers for their top of the line mono amps next week!\u003c\/strong\u003e This level of perfection and craftsmanship is certainly rare in today’s world of disposable products and its just one reason the MA5300 is considered a great value by anyone who has tested it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll of this attention to detail in the design and superb craftsmanship make it easy to see why McIntosh owners love their gear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"col_narrow\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eFeatures \u0026amp; Technology\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe MA5300 is rated at 100 watts per channel into an 8-ohm speaker load and is capable of delivering 160 watts per channel into a 4-ohm load.\u003c\/strong\u003e A perfect amp (and there are really not many at all out there) would double its power into a 4-ohm load so the MA5300 comes pretty darn close. \u003cstrong\u003eThe Class AB amp section of the MA5300 has that same classic McIntosh warm, yet powerful and detailed sound we find in all of their amplifiers. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you move it around to look at the rear panel, you’ll see it has plenty of inputs and control features. Along the bottom panel, you’ll find all of the analog inputs and outputs. \u003cstrong\u003eThere are four RCA analog audio inputs, a moving magnet phono stage input, and one pair of balanced audio inputs. The cool part about the way McIntosh did the digital side of things, is its modular card. It has what is called the DA1 digital input board installed, but you can upgrade it to the better DA2.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis modular approach means your integrated amp will not go obsolete when digital technology changes over the years. McIntosh actually does almost all of their digital products this way. We love the modular approach as it allows you to just replace the digital section down the road should there be large changes in digital formats.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWith the DA1 board, you get 2 coax digital inputs, 2 Toslink inputs, one USB input, and one special digital input for McIntosh MCT CD and SACD players.\u003c\/strong\u003e The DAC inside the DA1 is pretty special as it uses an 8-channel, 32-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter in Quad Balanced mode. It supports up to DSD256 and DXD 384kHz for high-resolution audio playback. This is an extremely flexible set of inputs allowing you to connect up just about any type of digital source. \u003cstrong\u003eThe MA5300 is also Roon tested if you are a fan of Roon, which we are here at Audio Advice.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn McIntosh preamps and integrated amps, you always get a great set of control connectors. McIntosh equipment is designed to talk to each other and there is a whole rabbit hole you can go down by having different pieces come on based upon what you did. There is also a rear IR and RS232 input for control for use with a smart remote or home control system. They literally thought of just about everything!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMany people want a great stereo system but only have one room in their home they can dedicate to music listening and enjoying home theater. McIntosh has an answer for this with their \u003cstrong\u003ehome theater bypass.\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eYou can connect up your favorite left and right speakers to the MA5300 for the best possible sound. Then, you simply use a home theater receiver that has preamp outs for the front channels. Almost all decent home theater receivers have this feature. You assign an input on the MA5300 to be the home theater bypass input. When you select this input, the sound from your home theater receiver passes straight through (and uses the great amp inside the MA5300 for your main speakers).\u003c\/strong\u003e The volume will be controlled with the home theater receiver remote. This is just a great feature that thankfully is starting to become more common on good two-channel gear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you set up your MA5300, you can just use the standard names for all of the inputs, but since there are 12 (yes, 12!) you might want to name them to make it easier to keep track. This is very simple to do with the front panel display and allows you to customize your system. While bass and treble controls may be frowned upon by some audiophiles, the MA5300 lets you totally bypass them or engage them for those old recordings that could use a little help.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe headphone jack on the front is far from an afterthought. It is made to support a very high-end pair of headphones with the ability to drive about any headphone on the market.\u003c\/strong\u003e It uses the McIntosh High Drive headphone amp technology and has their crossfade circuitry, which they call Headphone Crossfeed Director built-in. This is a circuit that has been around for a long time and many prefer to listen to headphones with crossfeed engaged. The MA5300 allows you to turn it on or off depending on the recording and your preference. This is a very unique design to totally eliminate any chance of amplifier clipping.\u003c\/strong\u003e Clipping occurs at very loud listening levels when the power demands of the music overrun the ability of the amplifier. Clipping is not good for your speakers, amp, or your ears. It usually occurs when the listener has shall we say, imbibed a little too much fun, and cranks up the volume way louder than reasonable. In McIntosh products with Power Guard®, there is a background system that is comparing the signal coming in to the signal going out. It can react in 1\/1000 of a second to reduce the signal from the preamp heading over to the amp to avoid clipping. \u003cstrong\u003eWith Power Guard® you never have to worry about hurting your speakers or amp.\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eSentry Monitor™ is another neat feature. We were at it again with the MA5300. We pulled out our \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mark-levinson-n-534-power-amplifier.html\"\u003eMark Levinson ML534\u003c\/a\u003e power amp and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mark-levinson-519-audio-player.html\"\u003eML519\u003c\/a\u003e digital preamp which sell for $40K for the pair and inserted the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mcintosh-ma5300-100-watt-integrated-amplifier.html\"\u003eMA5300\u003c\/a\u003e to drive a very hard load in the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/revel-salon2-floorstanding-speaker.html\"\u003eRevel Salon 2\u003c\/a\u003e. This is a speaker that typically needs a monster amp to bring out its best.\u003c\/p\u003e\n      \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe MA5300 did surprisingly well, especially in the sound staging area. It was able to paint a big and full soundstage that was very three dimensional.\u003c\/strong\u003e However, as we suspected, there is no 100 watt integrated amp that could ever be able to drive the Revel Salon 2 and while it had full bass, it did not have the control a big, separate power amp can deliver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n      \u003cp\u003eWe moved things around and selected a speaker that would be more normal for the price range of the MA5300. We chose the McIntosh \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/mcintosh-xr50-bookshelf-speakers.html\"\u003eXR50\u003c\/a\u003e speaker, which is a great bookshelf speaker and as we like to say here the MA5300 made them stand up and pay attention! \u003cstrong\u003eWe had great detail with never a sense at all of harshness and the soundstage was just huge when we got the placement of the XR50’s dialed in.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n      \u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe MA5300 has a sound that is like most current McIntosh gear, warm, rich, yet detailed.\u003c\/strong\u003e It also gets the timing right so you will be tapping your toes to the music on those rhythmic passages. On most speakers other than something like the challenging Revel Salon 2, it will also make you smile with its bass impact. From the side it looks very similar to the classic MC275 power amp with the McIntosh logo and model number on the side. The front glass panel is all modern McIntosh with those green LED’s we all love giving you a full view of how you are controlling it. A neat touch on the heatsinks is something you may not see at first glance, but there is an “Mc” monogrammed into their design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThe four tubes used in the input stage are on full display on top of the beautifully polished stainless steel chassis with some super cool-looking covers for them. And get this, when you power it on, they glow orange until the MA252 comes out of standby where they change to green. Ever since the very early days of audio, tube sound has been bringing its warmth to audio systems. Tube amplifiers can sound amazing, but they do have a couple of drawbacks. First, the output tubes used in a power amp are very large and can generate a substantial amount of heat. Second, output tubes are not inexpensive and need to be replaced more often than the smaller tubes found in preamps. Now McIntosh does make some of the most reliable and long-lasting all-tube amplifiers on the market, but there is still the heat and tube replacement cost to consider. But many hard-core music lovers go that way as we have to say, the sound is fantastic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eBut if you take the advantage of warm tube sound and put it in the preamp stage, then combine it with solid-state amplifier technology from one of the most famous solid-state amp makers ever, you have the McIntosh Hybrid Drive™. With several tube only preamps and over a dozen solid-state power amps in their lineup, the engineers were able to use the tech and circuit designs developed for these more expensive products in the MA252.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThe preamp stage uses two 12AX7a and two 12AT7 vacuum tubes. These types of tubes have been the mainstay of McIntosh tube preamps for decades giving them years of experience in perfecting their circuit design. McIntosh has a special soft start circuit that brings up the tubes slowly which greatly extends their life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eMcIntosh power amplifiers have always been known for their ability to control the speakers very well giving you great dynamics and punch to your music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eThey also have incorporated some pretty neat output transistors. Most solid-state power amplifiers sound better after they have warmed up, but McIntosh uses their advanced high current output transistors that sound great from the first minute you turn them on. They have another advantage in the way they control the bias which all transistors need that reduces distortion on passages where you have lots of dynamic changes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eAnother neat tech used in almost all McIntosh solid-state power amps is their patented Power Guard system. We have all probably witnessed a time when there was too much fun being had and someone cranked up the system far louder than was called for. This would normally cause the amp to go into clipping. With other brands, this might result in blown tweeters or an amp with smoke coming out of it, but this will never happen with Power Guard. It constantly monitors the signal and will kick in to prevent any clipping. You’ll know when this happens on the MA252 as the tubes will flash orange, then return to green when the clipping disappears.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eSome of us have also made the mistake of moving or connecting speakers with the unit turned on. The \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/chord\"\u003eChord DAC\u003c\/a\u003e has extremely good rhythm and pacing characteristics and we were curious to see if it will all come through using the MA252. The way it did was a big surprise. It had that sense of engagement you get with much more expensive gear really drawing us into the music with our toes tapping.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \u003cp\u003eWhen we pushed the towers really hard, you could tell the MA252 was starting to run out of gas, but they were in a large room and we had it very loud. There are two wings on the rear sides that protrude back almost 3”. Once you get all of your connections made, you can pop on an aluminum cover that attaches to the wings and completely hides all of the cables. This comes in especially handy if you wall-mount the Expert, which is another very cool option.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYour Expert 220 Pro will come with a remote that will be nothing like you have seen before. It's a heavy square block of aluminum with a large round knob in the center surrounded by a few buttons. We have to say, there is just something about having the feel of turning a solid volume control instead of pushing a plastic button on a remote, that makes changing the volume level a better experience. Plus, using the configurator, you can assign all kinds of different functions to the small buttons on the remote.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBuild quality of the entire unit is about as good as you can get. The chassis is just beautiful and every single connection on the rear is of super high quality. A pair of speakers is all you need to add to the Expert 220 Pro for most music systems. So, you have the option to fully maintain the normal characteristics of your speaker while reaping the benefit of the overload protection. A great option for those with very nice speakers (that they presumably purchased for a reason, they like the natural sound of the speaker).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDevialet also invented DAC - MAGIC WIRE™ which is a circuit design that puts the DAC right at the power amp with a signal path of only 5 cm in length. They claim this short path to the amp is far better than separate components. I don’t necessarily want readers to arrive at the conclusion that we simply chose to not have everything in a single ecosystem. To see what you are doing, you have to be standing right in front of the unit and peering into the small lighted circle on the top. Devialet tells us they will be updating the app soon which will be really great for the music lover who likes to fiddle around or someone with many old LPs that have different RIAA curves. If we had to sum it up, we would say, fast, tight, and very detailed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe did most of our testing using either the phono preamp or Roon via WiFi. The room we tested the unit in has spotty WiFi reception and we have noticed dropouts with other streamers in the past. The Expert 220 Pro never skipped a beat through several hours of listening tests.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe found the phono preamp to be very quiet and totally hum free, even when we cranked up the volume with nothing playing. Our particular phono cartridge is unshielded which has caused hum to be present in many phono preamps we have tested, but it was silent with the Devialet and our reference McIntosh preamp. There is some hiss in the phono preamp as you turn it up, but that is normal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe SAM setting for our speakers worked really well. With it turned on fully, you could hear better imaging and tighter, and even deeper bass. This was pretty impressive to us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe variable tone controls could also be a great feature for some rooms. If you have a bass peak and know where it is, you can actually dial in the exact frequency and reduce it with the bass tone control. Pretty cool. Better yet…If you’ve done room measurements, you can implement up to 9 bands of EQ with “\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/help.devialet.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360016719679\"\u003eSweet Room\u003c\/a\u003e.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we went through a variety of our reference tracks from classic rock, to jazz, to classical, we noticed the Expert 220 Pro never sounded like it was straining. There is another great cut on this same album, a John Prine song, \u003cem\u003eSpeed of the Sound of Loneliness\u003c\/em\u003e, that Prine sings background vocals on as well.
