First, they are terrific travel headphones that are a step above the normal Sony and Bose models you will see people wearing on planes. But there is a side benefit to this look — with most headphones, you have to go find the R or L to know which way to put them on. With the Bathys, you just put the logo side towards the front and don’t even have to look for the R or L, pretty cool! When you look around the airport lounge, you see lots of people with standard black travel headphones. Not these. We have always thought their headphones were super easy to wear. This was even more important for them with the Bathys with the travel use case. These weigh only 12 ¾ ounces which is very light for a headphone of this quality level. A lot of noise cancelling headphones like Sony and Bose are more on ear than over ear, which can reduce the long term comfort.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Bathys have very deep and wide earcups, making them a great fit for everyone. \u003cstrong\u003eThe pads themselves are ⅞” thick and almost ¾” wide.\u003c\/strong\u003e There is then a gap of about ¼” between them and the soft cover for the driver giving room for people with larger ears. \u003cstrong\u003eThe opening for your ear is also much bigger than a Sony or Bose at roughly 2 5\/8” tall and about 1 ¾” wide.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe entire surface of the cups are real soft leather over a very nicely squishy memory foam.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe headband is also covered in soft leather over memory foam that is ¾” thick where it touches the top of your head. The magnesium yokes adjust quite freely and were really easy to get a comfortable fit. The left side has one button which controls the way noise canceling operates.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe headphones come nicely packaged and include an ergonomic travel case that is somewhat hard and covered in what feels like a wool material that is light gray. A 1 meter USB C cable and ⅛” analog cable are included with the headphones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRemarkably, these \u003cstrong\u003ecan play for 30 hours using both Bluetooth and active noise cancelling without a charge and only take 90 minutes to fully charge.\u003c\/strong\u003e There is even a \u003cstrong\u003equick charge mode that gives you 5 hours of life in 15 minutes\u003c\/strong\u003e which is great when you are sitting in the terminal thinking, oh no, I forgot to charge my headphones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOk so far, these might sound like a really nicely made pair of very comfortable headphones you can use at home or on the road. Let's look at what impressed us so much.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFocal wanted the Bluetooth aspect of these to deliver the best audio, so they chose \u003cstrong\u003eBluetooth 5.1 technology that works with SBC, AAC, Apt-X™ and Apt-X™ Adaptive codecs\u003c\/strong\u003e, which is a great choice on their part. It supports high-definition audio up to 48 kHz sampling rates and sample resolutions up to 24 bits. We see some headphones that do not go the Apt-X route, which makes no sense to us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFocal has been perfecting their \u003cstrong\u003eproprietary ‘M’-shaped dome driver\u003c\/strong\u003e for years. It is made in France from a combination of magnesium and aluminum. A version of this is used in all of their top end headphones. The Bathys gets a new version of this same driver designed to be \u003cstrong\u003elighter for portable use\u003c\/strong\u003e. You get that same great dynamic sound that can reveal the tiniest detail, yet has that classic Focal warmth that makes their headphones so easy to listen to for a long time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFocal also has an app for the Bathys that lets you perform basic equalization and even save eq curves if you want to. We were playing some of our favorite test tracks that have very small details hidden in the background that most \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/headphones-portables\/headphone-features\/wireless-headphones\"\u003etravel headphones\u003c\/a\u003e just completely gloss over. On every single one, we could clearly hear the little details totally separated from the other instruments and that was using Bluetooth!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe real magic happens when you use the USB connection. This would generally be used for home or office use, but you simply slide the little switch to DAC On and this engages a great DAC that is inside the headphones. Yes, \u003cstrong\u003ethe Bathys includes a USB-DAC that can handle up to 24\/192k\u003c\/strong\u003e. Standalone headphone DAC amplifiers like this can cost upwards of $500 by themselves. We tested this on a Mac Studio. This bypasses the inexpensive Digital to Analog converter in the Mac and instead uses the superior DAC in the headphones. This also engages the small amplifier inside the headphones instead of driving them passively with the Mac. The difference was fantastic. We played several tracks including the now famous \u003cem\u003eMaverick: Top Gun\u003c\/em\u003e album.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ciframe src=\"https:\/\/widget.qobuz.com\/album\/au0q0ax1ytvta?lang=en\u0026amp;zone=us-en\" width=\"600\" height=\"130\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe separation of the instruments in the “Top Gun Anthem” track is incredible using the DAC. We found ourselves wanting to just listen to more and more music with the DAC engaged. As you would expect, \u003cstrong\u003ethe entire soundstage opened up and they could deliver the full symphonic dynamics without any strain\u003c\/strong\u003e. So with these headphones, whenever you are in the mood for higher performance listening, you just switch over to using the USB DAC. And that’s not it. Let’s say you just keep getting into your music and want to push these headphones to an even higher level. Well they have a mini headphone jack that you can connect to a high performance standalone headphone DAC\/amplifier. We tested them with a high end desktop headphone amp and they stepped up even more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe were also very impressed with the way they set up the noise cancelling. A small button on the left cup will turn this on or off, but the on mode has two settings. You \u003cstrong\u003epress the button quickly to select on or off, but if you hold it down for two seconds when noise canceling is turned on, you can switch between silent mode and soft mode\u003c\/strong\u003e. Silent mode will be great for travel completely block out external noise, while soft mode lets you hear a bit more of what is going on around you. We found we liked soft mode when we used Bluetooth at home. The off position is what Focal calls Transparent mode.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese will also be great for office use. They typically include small speakers and a subwoofer. Done properly, this type of design has some inherent advantages.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe human voice falls right in the critical midrange area of the acoustic range. By designing a small speaker that does not need to worry about producing deep bass, the engineer can focus on getting the important range of the music right. A well-designed sub can then take over to fill in the lower frequencies. The engineers know which speakers will be dedicated to which frequencies, and can design them to work perfectly with one another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe real trick is coupling the satellites with a \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/home-audio\/speakers\/subwoofers.html\"\u003esubwoofer\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e that is fast enough to keep up with them without just being a boomy, noisy box. That boomy bass will cover up all the midrange goodness, defeating the whole purpose.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA good sat\/sub system also offers the ability to place the smaller satellite speakers in the best spot in your room for great stereo imaging and put the sub in a place that couples best to your room for full and even bass response.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost French audio products have a pretty cool look about them, and the Sib Evo is no exception. The five speakers are in a curvy ABS plastic housing. They will never be accused of having a basic, boxy look! Fit and finish are excellent. The speakers use a push connection for the speaker cable and will accept up to a 12 gauge speaker wire. All 5 also come with a neat little base for table use and included in the box are two wall mounts, which will probably come in handy for the rears. There is also an optional floor stand available for them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe left and right larger speakers have two sets of connections on the rear, one pair for the main, and another on top of those for the Atmos speaker. One of our few complaints was the push connection widgets. It takes a little fiddling with them to get the speaker wire to go in all the way, and once you have it in, getting it out again is a bit of a challenge. For most people, getting the speaker wire in will be a one-time thing, so we felt this was not a deal-breaker.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eFeatures \u0026amp; Technology\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe five satellites each have a 5” Polyflex woofer and a ¾” soft dome tweeter. You will notice the main left and right satellites are larger than the other three. This is the cool part! These guys also have a 4” full-range Dolby Atmos speaker in the top of the cabinet that fires up at an angle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Cub subwoofer included in the package is almost a perfect 12” cube. It has an 8” Polyflex driver connected up to a 200-watt class D amplifier. The driver is downward firing with a front-firing port. Connections on the rear include a right and left input; the left is used for LFE (low-frequency extension channel). There is a level and crossover control, along with a phase switch. If you had to put the sub behind you, you’ll want to flip the phase switch to 180. The sub box itself is made out of a pretty dense MDF material and has a really solid feel to it with virtually no resonance. You’ll also notice that the feet for the sub are very large and designed to reduce vibrations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDolby Atmos came out about two years ago and we think it is the biggest improvement in surround sound we have heard since the introduction of Dolby Digital almost 20 years ago. Dolby Atmos is an \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/videos-reviews\/the-evolution-of-surround-sound-technology\/\"\u003eobject-based surround format\u003c\/a\u003e where the audio engineer doing the movie soundtrack has the ability to place sounds in a three-dimensional space. The idea is to use surround speakers at ear level in addition to either in-ceiling Atmos speakers or speakers that reflect off the ceiling as the Sib system uses. The Atmos speakers in the larger left and right satellite cabinets are angled to bounce the sound off the ceiling so it will appear to be coming from right above you. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBy now you may have figured out what the 5.1.2 means. In the new lingo of Dolby Atmos, this means you have five main speakers, one subwoofer, and two Atmos speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe set up the Focal Sib 5.1.2 with one of the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/videos-reviews\/sony-es-receiver-lineup-comparison\/\"\u003enew Sony ES receivers\u003c\/a\u003e to test it out. These are a great value, like the Focal system, and we suspect this will be a popular combination. Any Dolby Atmos-certified receiver will have a section in the setup in which you tell the system what kind of Atmos speakers you are using. When setting up the Focal system, make sure you specify that you are using upward-firing Atmos speakers in the front.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe set the crossover points for the satellites at 80 Hz and then put on some tunes to get the front speakers positioned best. Like most satellite\/sub systems, we found you want them in a rough 2:3 ratio. This means that if they are two feet apart, you sit three feet from them. In most rooms, this will probably work out to about a 6-foot spread sitting about 9 feet away from them. We then played a few different cuts with deep bass to get bass levels set properly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing the two-channel audio geeks that we are, we first had to determine how this system performed with just music in a two-channel stereo. Our music tests used a \u003cstrong\u003eNAD CD player\u003c\/strong\u003e going analog into the \u003cstrong\u003eSony receiver \u003c\/strong\u003e-- very impressive! The speakers are very clean sounding with no trace of harshness. If you dial in the satellite position, you can get a great 3-dimensional image with the main vocals floating dead center in front of you. Probably the most impressive part is how well the subwoofer blends with the satellites. It took a little fiddling with its position and output level, but once we had it set the way we wanted, the bass was quite seamless to the satellites. While it does not go as deep as a more expensive subwoofer, its response is excellent for its size. We just found music was a lot of fun to listen to using this setup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoving onto the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"\/home-theater.html\"\u003ehome theater\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e performance, we tried some cuts with challenging dialog. One of our favorite movies for this is \u003ci\u003eValkerie\u003c\/i\u003e because there are a lot of accented, deep voices in the soundtrack. If your center channel is weak, you’ll really notice it on some of the scenes. The Sib system did very well in this regard -- the dialog was crystal clear, allowing the actors' emotions to come through.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou’ll get the best results if you set the surrounds up just a little above ear level when you are seated, and about 12-18” behind your head, aimed at your listening area. If you have a flat ceiling that is 10’ or under, the upward-firing Atmos speaker does a pretty impressive job too. The cool thing about the base that comes with the main fronts is the way you can adjust the tilt on it +\/- about 5 degrees so you can “tune” the way Atmos feeds bounces off the ceiling and arrives at your listening spot. Overall, we still prefer actual Atmos in-ceiling speakers for the best effect, but for the money, this system works really well!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Focal Sib 5.1.2 might be one of the best values we have ever seen in \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"\/home-theater.html\"\u003ehome theater\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e. The original Clear benefitted from the R\u0026amp;D that went into the Focal Utopia and Elear, which featured a 40mm driver made from a combination of magnesium and aluminum and a new copper voice coil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis design made the driver in the original Clear easier to get going with better bass definition, greatly improved dynamics, and an, even more, linear top-end extension. This also allowed the original Clear to play louder than the Elear — even at very high volumes, we liked how the bass stayed completely in control.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, the Focal Clear Mg has been updated with a new speaker driver cone material. After four years of research and development, the engineers at Focal developed a dome with an all Magnesium cone for the full-range driver in the Clear Mg. This new alloy, combined with Focal’s special ‘M’-shaped dome, allows the speaker driver to be even lighter, and more rigid than the Clear’s original aluminum-magnesium driver.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince the original Clear already reproduced a pure, effortless, realistic sound, just think of even more impactful music, revealing even more. In Clear Mg, the high-performance dynamic driver can present a full range of frequencies from 5Hz to 28kHz for deep bass extension, and a maximum sound pressure level of 104dB for a more precise dynamic range in the mid to high frequencies. Think more precise micro details, more realism, and more accurate dynamics hiding in the headphone’s wide-open soundstage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe updated driver also gives the Focal Clear Mg an advantage in the power needed. They are 55 ohms compared to the Elear’s 80 ohms. While any headphone of this caliber will highly benefit from a better external amp, this lower impedance means they will run ok on your phone. About 56 seconds into the song, Buckingham’s voice rises outside of our heads, and the Clear Mg lets out all the emotions of his voice which can be hard to reproduce on some systems.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ciframe height=\"90\" width=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/widget.qobuz.com\/track\/15774691?lang=en\u0026amp;zone=us-en\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor our next classic dive, we pulled out Eric Clapton’s Slowhand from 1977. While we loved listening to it, “Lay Down Sally” was just truly amazing to hear with the Clear Mg. This more upbeat track features vocal harmony from Marcy Levy and Yvonne Elliman. Each voice is overdubbed far out into the left and right channels. When you hear Clapton singing dead center in the middle and these female harmonies come in way out to the sides of your head, and you hear the layers, it will surely put a smile on your face!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ciframe height=\"90\" width=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/widget.qobuz.com\/track\/15436121?lang=en\u0026amp;zone=us-en\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGoing back even further in time, we reached for Grand Funk Railroad’s, “Closer to Home” from 1970. There is a track on here we use a lot for our evaluations called “Mean Mistreater.” It starts out with a Fender Rhodes where one note is intentionally very distorted. The better the system, the easier it is to hear the distortion. It came through loud and clear on the Clear Mg -- no pun intended. The magic starts again with some overdubbed harmonies. You hear Mark Farner dead in the middle, smooth as silk. Then the producer plays around, sliding the mixed vocal tracks from left to right. This was a common trick in the ’70s. On the Focal Clear headphones, these tracks start far outside your head and float all the way to the other side — it’s almost spooky!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBass seems to go deeper on the Clear Mg as well. It really shines on acoustic bass, where you can hear even more of the rich harmonics. The Focal Clear Mg is incredibly neutral across the whole audio spectrum. If you are looking for a top-end sizzle, these are not for you. They are completely honest to the music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe also felt the Clear Mg was more dynamic than before. From top to bottom, the dynamic parts of a track seemed to be jumping out more while it was easier to hear the nuanced and subtle details in the softer passages. There are still some closed-backs that can portray more dynamics, but as has been our standard, we greatly prefer the sound of open-backs for critical listening. On a product like the Clear Mg, you get a real sense of openness with sounds floating all around your head and even to the outside — something that just isn’t possible to the same degree with closed-back headphones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eOverall Recommendation\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter testing the Clear Mg, we are more convinced than ever that Focal is still one of the absolute top players in the headphone game today.
